The Elevator pitches always prove to be interesting; it is the general first impression of the candidates and it is true what they say. First Impressions count, especially in this game. With only 17 candidates shortlisted, only 8 would go through to the live tasks, so the pressure was on. With all the videos posted online, candidates had just three days to get as many votes as possible. At 5pm on Friday 12th October voting closed & the final 8 were selected. The final 8 in no particular order are, Tony Houston, Sean McNally, Louise Welsby, Philip Barr, Paul Loughran, John Carroll, Judith Alexander & Siobhan McAuley. With three girls making up the final 8 this year it would only be right to start with them: You’re Fired! With Owen McMeel, 2011 QUB Apprentice Winner What a year it has been, having had a fantastic time both during and after the 2011 QUB Apprentice, I am delighted to be back and being given the opportunity to share my views, comments and opinions on this years contestants. This year the QUB Apprentice promises to be ‘Bigger, Better & Tougher’ than ever before. Over the coming weeks as each candidate is fired, I will report from behind the scenes on the biggest blunders, moments of genius, whats HOT & whats NOT, as well of course hearing from each candidate as they get fired. I will also post your comments, tweets and reactions each week. The finale will take place in the Students' Union on 21st November. Keep up-to-date every week on YouTube for each week's best bits as well as following along on the facebook page and please feel free to contact me directly via twitter. thequbapprentice YourQUBSU @mcmeel1 #qubapprentice2012 Louise Welsby: Louise, a current masters student in Human Rights Law, in her video notes her many strengths, ‘singing, dancing & acting.’ All of which would be very good if this competition was called QUB Strictly Come Dancing... Business however... The jury is still out... Siobhan McAuley: Siobhan ‘How is it goin’?” McAuley, self acclaimed comedian of the group, studying French also moonlights as an extra in Game of Thrones. However questions must be asked... Is it all just one big act with Siobhan? Judith Alexander: Former Head Girl, Judith, wants to take what she learns in class outside into the business environment. Judith boasts about her impressive track record on paper, however does pride come before a fall? Keep an eye on Judith, the 18 year old could surprise a few people. Sean McNally: Sean must be commended for what I hear was a very detailed and well organized campaign getting votes employing tactics that even Barrack would be proud of. Sean’s video tells us very little about the man. In a Step Brothers remake, he claims he wants to take 2 weeks holidays before starting work. Be fired this Wednesday, Sean and you will have all the holidays you want. John Carroll: With a fantastic tune in his video, everything is going well for John, until it gets to the end and viewers are left with a massive anti-climax with a rather abrupt ending. Is this a sign of things to come from John or is there a sequel to come? Tony Huston: In a confident pitch, Tony outlines numerous awards, achievements and international internships (a man after my own heart). So what do we say about Tony? Is he all talk and no walk? Paul Loughran: Paul uses clips of Jim Eastwood to try and get his message across why he would win the QUB Apprentice. Perhaps he is trying to garner Jim’s favour already? What is interesting is that we learn nothing about Paul. Playing his cards close to his chest or just ashamed of an empty hand? For the meantime, was the video creative? NO... Exciting? NO... Do we know Paul? NO... Will he win?? ...Time will tell. Phillip Barr: The 2nd year Business Management student was made for a competition like this. In his video Phillip goes over why he is well suited for the QUB Apprentice, which I must say I agree with. Interestingly however Phillip names many ‘successes’. However, on further research, Philip’s definition of success may need revision... Check out all the video pitches here: http://www.youtube.com/user/yourQUBSU?feature=watch Would you like to volunteer for The National Autistic Society?
