Anka, Koons and L.eeTie in Flannon Memorial
Clark F{armon was a long-time member of the
Portland ChessClub, thus the Club felt it could honor
his memory with a tournament. Unfortunately, the
timing of the tournament conflicted with the Evergreen Empire Open in Tacoma. This was the only
time that GM Emil Anka, a gmd friend of Clark
Flarmon, could come and play. As it turnod, Anka
could start only with round three (due to other commitnents), entering the tournament wift I l/2 points.

Now to the results: GM Anka did win the three

last round matches.Nick Raptis was the lucky (or
unlucky,dependingon one'sperspective)playerwho
had to play the GM ur the last round. He hung in
there for quite a uhile: it was the las gameto finish.

showed up for the tournament. Hopefully the Portland Chess Club can repeat this tournament in the

Cherry Hillo Revisited
by Murlin Vamer
nother August, another U. S. Open: however, not another town.
The 108'hU. S. Open retumed to the New Jerseysite of the 103'd,
I
\Ctrerry Hill. We visited the samehotel, although with a new rurme,
and the highest room rate ever for an Open. This area of New Jersey is a
random patchwork of disorganized suburbs. I chose to stay in nearby
Maple Shade. My cost for both motel and rental car was less t}an would
have beenthe cost for a room at the site. And I had a kitchen! This was my
tenth Open in a row and I'm finally getting smarter about these things.
(Ioo bad my chessplay doesn't get any smarter.) For those who care and
havenl already lmked it up on the Internet, there was a seven-waytie for
first this year: GM Alexander Shabalov,GM Boris Gulko, GM Sergey
Kudrin,IM Benjamin Finegold,GM Michael Rohde,IM Michael Mulyar,
and Anton Del Mundo each scored7.5/9.

play the garnes, and it is just rude when an opponent pulls this on you. Finally, we have Murlin
Varner (1530) (that's me!). I managedto score
3.5/9, just a little below my averageperformance
at the Open. As mentioned above, my first four
opponentsweregeezerslike me, excspt with higher
ratings. I managed to obtain two draws, with
Roger Smith (MO, 1773) ud Clive Usiskin (NJ,
1700). The gamewith Clive was a rematchof the
seventhround of the 2003 Open in los Angeles.
Clive won that one, so I got a little revengethis
time. ln the final five rounds, I played the kids,
breaking even. My loss in the sixth round was to
Gabriel Tkach (PA, I140), my only upset loss of
the event. Happily, for him, he went on to win
first in classE, collecting51000. He didn't send
me a gratuiqv. In the final round. I playedmy first
opponent from outside the Western Hemisphere,
as I drew withNing Hou, a voung grrl from China
Theturnout was nothing special. Actually'.it was rather bad. Excluding houseplayers, there were onll' 405 ertrants among the four different

this was pretty bad. (This year's eventwas almost 25o/obelowlast year's Dan Mayers(1937)

I suspectthat the low turnout was greatly relatedto the return visit to

underscoresthis young/old trend, leaning waaaay to the young side.
First, lets go over the old guys. Highest scoring was Dan Mayers
( I 899) from [daho, with a scoreof 5.5/9. Dan has beengoing to the Open
for many years and always does well. Among his accomplishmentsthis
year were a win over Charles Bouzoukis (2277) of Delaware and draws
with Lorand Kis (PA, 2207) and Stanley Yang (TX, 2082) Dan's only
losses were to master-rated players. Also scoring 5.5 was Oregonian
Herman Chiu (2026). Herman has been on a temporary assignmentin
Pennsylvaniaand stayedon this summerto play in a few eventssuch as the
World and U S Opens. Herman accomplished draws with trryo masters
(Zaldnr Fayvinov, PA,2200 and Robert Rowley,A2,2208). and his only
Iosseswere also to masters.
Next we have David Fulton (1800), an Oregonianrecently relocated
from Pennsylvania. David had other reasonsto be in the area, but found
time to play in the Open as well. When I talked to him at the Harmon
Memorial in Portland earlier this summer,he wasn't sure he'd be able to
play, but I was glad to seethat he worked it out. David scored five points.
includng a draw with Carl Flarmon in round four (more on Carl below).
SadlX David was denied his last game when his opponent decidedto take
offearly without informing the directors. Most of us go to thesethings to

Thev offered a "quick" schedule. where you still played one
game a night, but the time control
for the first six rounds was G/60.
There were few entrants into that
schedule,giving the higher rated
players a great advantageover
those in the more populated
schedules.It seemedbizarre to me
and I think they shouldn't repeat
this idea.

with just 35 players pre-registeredon Friday, we
decidedto combine the scholastic and open categories into one section. However, by noon on

first round started shortly after 12:30 p.m. The
format w:$ a seven-roundSwiss with two games,
White and Black, per round. The field rvas very
competitive,with thc WA StateChampion lgnacio

included FM John Readel, NM Nat Koons, FM David Roper, Ricky Selzler,Josh Sinanan(rated over 2700 on the lnternet

Hurt-SheetsoWA Championship l94ll
by IM JohnDonaldson
Hurt's style is of a steadypositional type, the basisof which is to
allow the opponentas little opportunity for potent threats as possible,
coupledwith the vigilant avoidance
ofthreats.
White has the choice brryeen a3-a4
and b4-b5 (queensideattack) and92-94
(kingside attack). He decidesin favor of
the latter, since the crowded position of
the Black piecesmakes satisfactory defenseimpossiblein the long run.

of tfieEthicsCommitteeconcerningsaremenshehad madeononeof theUSCF foraduringlastyear'selectioncampaigr.
A sixty-pagepacketof documentswas handedout at the beginning of the meeting, but no one had yet fioundtime o read
it. Sowe movedon o some minor motions, the most sigrificant of which were tie ficlloving:
The USCF ScholasticCouncil mustbe consuled if the USCF wishes o allow an ouside organizer b hold national
scholasticevens.
The USCF will no longer give free membershipso U.S. Glvts unlesstiey specinca[y requestsuch (an anti-Bobby
Fischer measure-his membershipwas revoked after commentsin support of the 9,/ I I terorists).
On the secondday, the budget which calls for an operating income of about $50,0fi), based chiefly on lovering
expenses-tournament expensesbeing $80,000lower and professionalfees,t !0,m0 lower. The Sloan appealtook a litde
longer to consider, but most felt fiat his satements to dre effect drat Beatriz Marinello and Grant Perkshad "commitrd
crimes during the coune of their duites at USCF . . . [were] made with a recklessdisregardfirr their truth or fAb€hood."
However,I was one ofl the handfirl ftat voed to overturn the Ethics Committeeruling, becauseno widence was presened
regarding$e truth or falsehoodof Sloan'sassertions, nor wasit shown that heknew,or should haveknorvn, that his cliaims
were false.
Like in Oregon,
you cannot pump
your own gas in
New Jersey.
After tltis, the delegatesconsideredsome fifteen o twenty motions. We approvedan accounting change, curing in
half the amount of "life member dues recogr.ized" fior two years. The money w:ls spent in fte past, but not properly
accouned firr at the time. The effect of this measurewill be o lower the USCF's saed income.
Montana and

The delegatesoverturnedlast yrar's rule changerequiring mwes to be writEn do,m only afor dtry had beenplayed.
