U. S. GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS
The Law Library is a selective depository for U.S. Government Documents issued by the
Government Printing Office (GPO). The Library collects government publications that are used
in legal research or address a specific area of scholarly interest at the Law School.
Significant titles are integrated into the collection, such as U.S. Reports, Statutes at Large and
other monographic publications. Other printed materials are shelved by Superintendent of
Documents (SuDoc) classification number in the closed stacks and can be retrieved at the
Library Desk. To get the call numbers, search the Library's Diamond online catalog
(diamond.temple.edu) or the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications (catalog.gpo.gov).
The SuDocs classification gathers documents not by subject (as the Library of Congress
classification system does) but by the issuing agency. The first letter or letters in the call number
is an abbreviation for the document’s origin:
A = Agriculture
JU = Executive Office of the Judiciary
J = Justice Department
LC = Library of Congress
Numbers following the agency designation identify the type of series and individual book
number:
J 1.2 (General Publications of the Justice Department)
LC 1.1 (Annual Report of the Library of Congress)
Often year or edition designations can be seen in the call numbers:
LC 1.1:994 (Library of Congress Annual Report for 1994)
Microfiche titles are kept on 7A and filed in SuDoc order. Bills, annual reports, General
Accounting Office reports and other miscellaneous documents are supplied on microfiche.
Library desk staff can help you locate the correct fiche and operate the reader/printer.
Titles on CD are kept at the reserve desk. CDs may be viewed on workstations in the Student
Research Lab or in the Library main reading room.
A great deal of government information is also available on the internet and accessible through
the Government Printing Office portal the Federal Digital System (www.fdsys.gov).
