May 2012, Volume 25, No. 5 June 2012, Volume 25, No. 6 Temple Shir Shalom People often ask why it is that we break a glass at the end of a Jewish wedding. As I’ve heard the wide variety of rabbinic responses ranging from it being a reminder of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem to each shard representing a year of love and joy the couple will enjoy together, I realized that we have no idea why we break the glass. However, we do know why we raise a chuppah, the wedding canopy, at every Jewish wedding. The chuppah is a symbol of shelter, a symbol of the first home that the couple will share. The chuppah is a reminder of our nomadic ancestors, specifically of the Biblical Abraham, whose tent was open on all four sides so travelers, no matter where they were coming from, knew they were welcome. The chuppah, open on all four sides, is a reminder that we, like Abraham, are supposed to fulfill the commandment of hachnasat orchim, welcoming guests, into our homes. A Home is Always Open by Rabbi Daniel A. Schwartz Thanks to the Ride-4-Reform, a five-day mountain bicycle ride in which I participated in Israel at the end of March, I was reminded of what the act of hachnasat orchim really means. While riding through the Judean Hills on our way towards Jerusalem, I stopped to take a picture near a Bedouin (a nomadic people in Israel) tent. While taking the picture, one of the young boys inside the tent came running out and asked me if I wanted some tea. When I enthusiastically said “yes,” his two brothers came running out and placed pillows on the ground for us to sit on as they treated us to some wonderful Bedouin hospitality, a hot cup of tea and conversation. Our tradition teaches us to do the same. Hachnasat orchim is not simply inviting others over, although that is good, too. We are literally to bring them in and show them gracious hospitality. As you think of the home you’ve created, how do you fulfill the act of hachnasat orchim? What more could you do? This summer, try brushing up on your hachnasat orchim skills – bring a friend, family member, or new neighbor into your home and treat them to some wonderful hospitality – and maybe even a cup of iced tea. Andre Douville Executive Director Yom HaAtzma’ut, Israeli Independence Day, commemorates Israel’s declaration of independence on the Hebrew date of 5 Iyar 5708 (May 14, 1948). Large commemorative celebrations are common throughout Israel and smaller celebrations, especially among Israelis, occur throughout the Diaspora. When I lived there, Dizengoff Square in Tel Aviv was jammed-packed with people walking around bopping each other on the head with plastic hammers. They still have those hammers, large and small. Emitting a squeak with each harmless blow, the hammers have become as much a part of the Israeli Independence Day celebration as have fireworks in the United States. They are an outward expression of the joy we feel because Israel is our home. Back here at home, we truly act best as a community as we all come together to celebrate Israel. But we don’t just stop there. For the seventh year in a row, I am proud to say that Shir Shalom will host the annual Walk for Israel, this year on Sunday, May 6. But we don’t do it alone. (Check out our incredible list of co-sponsors below.) And if you are wondering how you can help, we need volunteers the day of the walk and we can always use more sponsors with costs increasing every year. There will be fun and games for the kids, information and representatives from the groups listed above, and, this being an election year, lots of politicians meeting and greeting anyone within arm’s reach. Together...we Walk for Israel. Am Yisrael Chai! We are joined this year by such organizations as Ford Motor Company Fund, The Detroit Jewish News, Friends of Israel, Jewish National Fund, Congregation Beth Ahm, Volunteers for Israel, Adat Shalom Synagogue, B’nai B’rith Youth Organization, Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah, Hillel Day School of Metro Detroit, Jewish Community Relations Council, Jewish Federation of Metro Detroit, National Council of Jewish Women, ORT Michigan Region, Temple Israel, Zionist Organization of America, Stand with Us Michigan, Akiva Hebrew Day School, B’nai Israel Synagogue, Temple Beth El, Friends of Israel Defense Forces, Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit, AIPAC, Temple Emanu-El, Tamarack Camps, Congregation B’nai Moshe, Israel Ministry of Tourism, Temple Kol Ami, Michigan Jewish Institute, Anti-Defamation League, Congregation Beth Shalom, State of Israel Bonds, American Technion Society Detroit Chapter, Hillel of Metro Detroit, Michigan Board of Rabbis, Tamarack Camps and Metro Detroit Board of Jewish Educators. For more information, please visit www.walkforisrael.org Lifelong Learning Missy Borman Principal As the end of the year approaches, it is a great time to reflect on the amazing 2011/2012 school year at SHORESH. It has been a fabulous year with many highlights including preparing for the High Holy Days, a joint kindergarten/sixth grade Chanukah celebration, the Tikkun Olam-a-thon, family programs for pre-kindergarten through third grade, and Honors Shabbat services for fourth through sixth grade students and families. It is incredible to see the growth the children have experienced throughout the year, as well as the friendships that have been built and the learning that has occurred. As I look at the children’s smiling faces, I have to take a moment to thank all of the people who made this year at SHORESH possible, including the dedicated staff who contributed their creativity and love of learning each week, as well as the parents of SHORESH students who have showed continuous dedication to their children’s Jewish education. Marsha Mitnick Early Childhood Learning Center The following is an interview with a parent whose son attends The Learning Center. Really, it says it all. What made you choose The Learning Center for your child? We chose The Learning Center because of the small family feel of the program. After visiting for an open house, we that the classrooms were so bright and open. It was immediately apparent that this was a kid-friendly place to learn. In what ways has The Learning Center connected you with Temple Shir Shalom? Our entire family connected with Shir Shalom when we were given the chance to get to know Rabbi Moskowitz and Rabbi Schwartz. The rabbis are very involved with the kids at The Learning Center. Their visits are the highlight of my son’s day and I always hear about their stories and songs. What has impressed you about that you didn’t expect? The Learning Center is more than just a preschool; it is a close-knit group of genuinely friendly people. The teachers work closely together to understand each child and to help each of them learn and grow. My son is truly growing up through the program at The Learning Center. If you could share something about our preschool with someone, what would you say? Words don’t do justice for what goes on there every day. The magic and joy that the kids feel and experience is inspiring and reminds us every time we walk through the door what a great choice this was for our son. Come and check it out for yourself! B’nai Mitzvah! Shelby Matthew Raminick, son of Dena and David Raminick, will become a bar mitzvah at the Friday evening Shabbat service on May 4, 2012. He is the grandson of Robin Winburn-Woll, Jan Hockenberg, Gail Raminick-Zisholz and Larry Zisholz. An honor roll student at Clifford Smart Middle School, he is an animator and artist and has achieved multiple recognition awards for his artwork. Shelby feels a great responsibility to take care of those in need and give back to his community – both are also themes in his Torah portion – and has spent time working at Yad Ezra as well as serving meals to the less fortunate. Shelby would like to thank his rabbis, his amazing tutor Geri Zacks, and his brother Noah for helping him to prepare for this milestone, which he looks forward to sharing with his family and friends. Hannah Mary Robinson, daughter of Julie and Bruce Robinson, will become a bat mitzvah at the Friday evening Shabbat service on May 11, 2012. She is the granddaughter of Charlotte and Paul Milgrim, the late Mary Jean and Dean Robinson, and of Harold Finstein. A student at Frost Middle School, Hannah always looks forward to spending Passover at her grandparents’ house and singing with her aunts. To her, becoming a bat mitzvah means that she is becoming responsible for her Jewish education and more involved in helping Israel. She feels that Shir Shalom has helped her to grow as a Jew, and that the people here are part of her extended family. In the years to come, Hannah would like to continue helping her grandmother with projects at I Am My Brother’s Keeper Ministries. Melissa Brooke Porlick, daughter of Deborah and Thomas Porlick, will become a bat mitzvah at the Saturday morning Shabbat service on May 12, 2012. She is the granddaughter of Margot and Michael Gottlieb and Mary Lou and Robert Porlick. A student at Scranton Middle School, Melissa describes her summer at Goldman Union Camp Institute (GUCI) as one of her most memorable Jewish experiences because she was constantly surrounded by a great community. She says that preparing for her bat mitzvah is one of the hardest things she’s ever studied for, but she is excited about everything it means and looks forward to taking on new responsibilities and observances and continuing her Jewish studies. B’nai Mitzvah! Arleigh Sheldon Parr, daughter of Allison and Harry Parr, will become a bat mitzvah at the Friday evening Shabbat service on May 18, 2012. She is the granddaughter of Pauline Woll and the late Arthur Woll and of Sima and Jerry Parr, and attends Bloomfield Hills Middle School. Arleigh is considered a “tree hugger” because of her concern for protecting animals and the environment, and has been a vegetarian since she was eight years old. Preparing for her bat mitzvah has given her a deeper connection to the Jewish community. She feels proud to have learned to read Hebrew and that she is able to take part in this tradition. She is also excited to celebrate her bat mitzvah in such a meaningful way by planting trees in Detroit. Arleigh is grateful to her family for supporting her and being there for her throughout her life. Seth Cohen, son of Cari and Daniel Cohen, will become a bar mitzvah at the Saturday morning Shabbat service on May 19, 2012. He is the grandson of Sylvia and David Cohen, Rebecca and Bernard Toby, and a student at Clifford H. Smart Middle School where he plays on the travel baseball team. Seth enjoys getting together with his family to celebrate the Jewish holidays and is excited about becoming a bar mitzvah. He would like to thank his Shir Shalom family, especially his tutor Geri Zacks, for inspiring him to work hard and meet the challenge of reaching this milestone. In the years to come, Seth hopes to continue his Jewish studies and one day travel to Israel. Hannah Male, daughter of Megan and John Male, will become a bat mitzvah at the Friday evening Shabbat service on May 25, 2012. She is the granddaughter of Judi and Michael Male and Marilyn and Ronald Silberman. Hannah attends Cranbrook Kingswood Girls’ Middle School and describes one of her favorite memories as the sukkah she helped to build in preschool. She vividly remembers tying on different fruits and vegetables, dancing around, and blessing the lulav. Up to this point, Hannah’s responsibilities as a Jew have been to know the history of her people and follow their morals. As she grows, she will continue to learn more and follow the customs, which she hopes to one day pass down to her children in turn. Hannah has enjoyed learning as much as she can about Judaism and is grateful for her freedom. She will always remember the hardships of those who came before her so that she can live the life she has today. B’nai Mitzvah! Emma Gallant Keer, daughter of Jeri and Tim Keer, will become a bat mitzvah at the Saturday morning Shabbat service on May 26, 2012. She is the granddaughter of Sylvia Gallant Goldfarb and the late Norman Gallant, Margaret Jackson and the late John Keer. Emma is a student at Derby Middle School where she plays on her school’s volleyball and soccer teams, as well as the trumpet in her school band. An avid reader, especially of the Harry Potter series, she also plays the piano and enjoys spending summers at Camp Michigania where she loves horseback riding. Emma looks forward to Food, Fun & Fireworks at Temple every year because the music, food, and activities are always great. Preparing for her bat mitzvah has been inspiring for Emma. She feels special and proud to be Jewish, and thinks it’s cool to know how to read another language. Emma is grateful to her parents for their love and encouragement. She would also like to thank her tutor, Yali Dvir, who has been her Hebrew teacher since fourth grade and makes studying so much fun that it never feels like work. Andrew Jacob Czapp, son of Lisa and Tim Czapp, will become a bar mitzvah at the Friday evening Shabbat service on June 1, 2012. He is the grandson of Frank Komorowski and the late Rochelle Komorowski and of Al Czapp and the late Mary Czapp. Andrew is a student at Norup International School who loves playing hockey and playing video games with his friends. His favorite part about being Jewish is celebrating the Jewish holidays with family. Thanks to his tutor Mikhael Reamer and his own hard work, Andrew is finally becoming confident in his ability to read and speak Hebrew and lead his friends and family in prayer, something he never thought he would have the confidence to do before starting this process. Joshua William Noorily, son of Marcia Newcombe and Michael Noorily, will become a bar mitzvah at the Saturday morning Shabbat service on June 2, 2012. He is the grandson of Sara and Morry Noorily, Mary Anne and John Newcombe, and a student at Berkshire Middle School. Joshua fondly remembers leading Chanukah and Passover prayers with his family for the holidays and also enjoyed volunteering as a third grade teacher’s assistant at religious school. Joshua has been busy studying his Hebrew, helping at SHORESH, and participating in Temple activities. Preparing for his bar mitzvah has been a lot of hard work, but it was worth it. In the years to come, he would like to stay active in the community and continue his Jewish studies. B’nai Mitzvah! Rachel Alyse Wechsler, daughter of Deborah and Roger Wechsler, will become a bat mitzvah at the Saturday morning Shabbat service on June 9, 2012. She is the granddaughter of Wynn and Harvey Wechsler, Terry Penman and the late Evelyn Penman. Rachel is a fun, happy, and energetic person, and a student at O.E. Dunckel Middle School. She loves going on retreats with the Madrichim Program and says that preparing for her bat mitzvah was a fun experience. It was hard and a lot of work, but she really enjoyed it. Rachel is grateful for her friends and family because they are the reason that she’s here today. Justin Samuel Weiss, son of Jodi and Ron Weiss, will become a bar mitzvah at the Friday evening Shabbat service on June 15, 2012. He is the grandson of Joyce and Morton Maza and of Joyce and Gerald Weiss. A student at Orchard Lake Middle School, Justin cherishes celebrating Shabbat and the Jewish holidays with his family. He feels a deep connection to Shir Shalom and our rabbis, who have taught him what it means to be Jewish and to appreciate his heritage and people’s history. To him, becoming a bar mitzvah means that he is becoming more responsible in the Jewish community and he looks forward to passing on our traditions to future generations of his family. Justin looks forward to someday visiting Israel with his family where he can experience our Jewish homeland for himself. Brett Vinton, son of Barbara and Jeff Vinton, will become a bar mitzvah at the Saturday morning Shabbat service on June 16, 2012. He is the grandson of Ruby and Sheldon Fridson, and the late Brenda and Harvey Vinton. A student at O.E. Dunckel Middle School, he has looked forward to his own bar mitzvah ever since his brother’s a few years ago and the whole experience has made him feel very proud to be Jewish and a part of our community. Brett has worked as a volunteer at Yad Ezra and the Miracle League, and will continue to be charitable with his time and resources and to work to make a positive impact on our community. B’nai Mitzvah! Melissa Pearson daughter of Lisa and Craig Pearson, will become a bat mitzvah at the Friday evening Shabbat service on June 22, 2012. She is the granddaughter of Zoe and Joe Pearson, Eileen and Mervyn Hamburg, and of Jo Ann Orange of blessed memory. Melissa attends the Pan American School of Bahia in Salvador, Brazil. She is a nice, funny person who cares about her family and friends very much, and she very much enjoyed participating in Shir Shalom’s Madrichim Program and going on their retreats because she likes spending time with her Jewish friends from Temple and learning more about Judaism while having fun. Preparing for her bat mitzvah has made her feel closer to God and more a part of the Jewish community. She feels connected with Jewish people all around the world when she knows that she is reading the same prayers that they are. Melissa is grateful for her family who has given her so much. She has learned a great deal from them and she loves spending time with them. Bethany Kopel, daughter of Christine and Mark Kopel, will become a bat mitzvah at the Saturday morning Shabbat service on June 23, 2012. She is the granddaughter of JoAnne and Walter Winiarski and of the late Thelma and Martin Kopel, and a student at Novi Middle School. Bethany feels that one of her most memorable experiences was her immersion at the mikvah, which was a unique experience. (The best part may have been when Rabbi Moskowitz started singing the “Who wants to be a Jew today?” song.) Being a part of Shir Shalom has taught her a lot about being Jewish and, to her, becoming a bat mitzvah means that it is her responsibility to carry on our traditions. Bethany is looking forward to travelling to Israel this winter with her family on Shir Shalom’s family mission trip. E-mail Cantor Steyer at penny@shirshalom.org, describing your talent and/or instruments played so that we can learn more about you! Graduation 5772 Rachel Gaberman, daughter of Pam Gaberman and David Gaberman, says that her time at Shir Shalom has meant the world to her. Spending time with her extended family of friends and staff here has not only strengthened her connection to Judaism and her Jewish identity, but they have shared irreplaceable memories over the years and formed special bonds that will last and be cherished forever. Rachel recalls how much her bat mitzvah gave her a better understanding of her Jewish heritage, which is very meaningful to her. The effort that was needed to prepare for her service was unlike any other she’d ever undertaken, and after her service was over her feeling of accomplishment was beyond amazing. Rachel will attend Wayne State University and, while she is currently considering law school, is not completely decided on a major and is open to other directions. She plans to further her education as much as possible and earn a master’s degree and, after college, to live her life to the fullest and be as successful as she can. Mara Kavieff, daughter of Cindy and Reid Kavieff, feels that her time at Temple has allowed her to learn more about her religion and form strong and lasting relationships with our rabbis and staff. Monday Night School has given her the opportunity to express herself on different topics as they relate to Judaism, and learning her Torah portion for her bat mitzvah has taught her that she can truly accomplish anything. It’s difficult for Mara to decide between her bat mitzvah or the trip she took to Israel as to which is most significant. Even though they are different, both experiences held some level of nervous anticipation but also taught her a lot about herself and that she can pretty much do anything she sets her mind to. In the fall, Mara will be attending Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI. Sam Nathan, son of Lauren and Michael Nathan, knows that his time at Temple has meant a lot to him. Sam grew up at our Sunday school and looked forward to seeing the friends he made here every week. As he got older he grew to enjoy Temple even more. The process of becoming bar mitzvah made everything somehow more meaningful, and Monday Night School is always fun. He hopes that the friends he has made here will always be a part of his life. For him, the four weeks he spent in Israel is one of the most memorable experiences he has ever had. Touring the country and being able to see our homeland was fantastic. Being able to see so much history, to feel one with it, was truly amazing. Praying at the Western Wall was surreal and awesome – he really felt a connection to G-d there. The trip itself was so much fun, but that it was Israel makes it all the more incredible. Sam will be attending Grand Valley State University and intends to get involved with Hillel there to continue his Jewish studies. He would love to travel to Israel again, and maybe study there for a year. Graduation 5772 Jake Seigle, son of Susie and Steve Seigle, has made a lot of wonderful memories and lasting friendships during his time at Shir Shalom. From Sunday School at Doherty, to Madrichim retreats, to NFTY Kallot, he has learned a lot about Judaism and himself, and is glad to have been able to get to know the “new” Rabbi Schwartz as well these last few years. Travelling to Israel during the summer of 2010 was one of the best experiences Jake has ever had. What started out as a trip with a few friends soon became an unforgettable month where he met a lot of new people who he still talks to today. Never before had he had as much fun, or learned as much about Judaism. (He even overcame his fear of heights.) Jake feels closer to Israel now, that it is the homeland he can always return to, and he hopes to share his love of Judaism and our people’s heritage with his future family. This fall, Jake plans to attend Eastern Michigan University where he will study sound engineering and political science, or possibly law. Whatever he does, wherever he goes, he will bring Judaism with him and make sure that his family holds it close for generations to come. Grant Yarber, son of Judy and Terry Yarber, is thankful that his time at Shir Shalom has given him the opportunity to form close relationships with his peers in the Jewish community. He is also grateful to the rabbis for all of their encouragement over the years and for helping him to stay focused on his studies. Preparing for and becoming a bar mitzvah was a meaningful experience for Grant. It gave him a feeling of commitment and dedication to Judaism. In the fall, Grant will be attending the University of Michigan where he plans to study music and business. Nathan Freund, son of Cynthia and Marc Freund, describes his time at Shir Shalom as amazing. It has allowed him to find a community of other Jews, and a comfortable place. One of his most significant experiences so far has been travelling to Israel. It is a beautiful, historical country, and visiting there gave him the opportunity to make personal connections that he would never have made anywhere else. Nathan plans to major in history at Western Michigan University and hopes to find a teaching job in the future. Under the direction of their advisor, Brett Mountain, they made over 300 cookies, chopped tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, and all the other ingredients to serve soft tacos to 100 people at the shelter. They even had enough to offer seconds. The children who came were thrilled, as were the men and women at the shelter. As a Temple we have a lot to be proud of with our youth group. They were happy to take on the month of January, and the laughter from the kitchen on the Monday night before could only ensure their dedication to this project. On behalf of the men, women, and children of IAMBK, Temple Shir Shalom, and myself, thank you, SSTY, for all you did. Our March dinner was made possible through the donations of many of our Temple members – Annette Pines, Steve Chadwick, Michael Abramsky, Diane Jacobs, Charlotte and Paul Milgrim, Carol Efrusy andpm Girl Scout Troop #43797 in Livonia – as well as Great Harvest Bread Company in Commerce Twp. 12:00 to Temple will return to IAMBK on May 24, sponsored by our Brotherhood, and on July 26, sponsored by Sisterhood. Thank you to all the members of Temple for their donations and hard work. Charlotte Milgrim Social Action Chair for IAMBK @ The Corners Photos by Brett Mountain Take Note! Sisterhood Janice Schwartz, President Sisterhood has had a busy year of mitzvot and events, and our members are proud of all that we have accomplished, from our Sisterhood garage sale to our honey fundraiser which provided funds to allow us to help others in need of assistance, whether in our own temple or in our community at large. Some of our groups include Quilts for Comforts, our knitting group, and Book Worms. We are very involved at the I am My Brother’s Keeper Ministries, provide support at Care House, volunteer and contribute food items at Yad Ezra, as well as other worthwhile mitzvah projects. One of our recent highlights was our Friday evening Sisterhood Shabbat service this past February. Many of our Sisterhood members were involved and, with the assistance of Cantor Steyer and the participation of our wonderful choir, it was a very inspiring and memorable Shabbat service. All our group events, activities, and projects offer a way to be involved and our members all agree that once you get involved it will become very rewarding and fun. Please continue to support us and, if you haven’t checked us out recently, we hope you will join us at one of our upcoming meetings or events and be a part of our creative and socially active organization. Our membership dues are only $36 per year, and all new Temple members receive a complimentary first year membership. Sisterhood offers an opportunity to make a difference in our community while building friendships that can last a lifetime. Happy spring! Brotherhood Michael Colton, President We recently had another great Maven Gallery. The Fab Four performed their hearts out and a splendid time was had by all. Needless to say, the band passed the audition with flying colors. We also raised some nice proceeds that will now go directly to where it is needed at our Temple and surrounding communities. For those of you who came, you know how fun the event was. Thank you. The Brotherhood has two more meetings planned for this season. Both will be special, and we would love to have you join us. The next meeting on Wednesday, May 9, will be a special program at the Holocaust Memorial Center, open to all Temple members. A special thanks to their director, Steve Goldman, for inviting us to hold our meeting there and tour the museum afterwards. The June meeting is on Wednesday the 13th. This meeting is so special, we can’t announce the details here, but please know that it will be a fun and interesting evening. Estate Planning & Temple Shir Shalom Including Temple Shir Shalom in your estate planning is a valuable affirmation of our congregation’s mission, and helps to ensure that our programs and services can be carried out for future generations. From the President: Pam Kornfeld Where has the time gone? It seems like only yesterday that I was standing with a candle in my hand at Service Under the Stars about to become the new president of Shir Shalom. I wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into. After all, as a congregation we were enduring the worst economic time in our Temple’s history and we were facing some growing pains as well. It has been quite a journey. Over the past three years I have asked for your help in leading this congregation and together we bridged our gap, increased our membership, and went the extra mile for our congregants who needed us. Together we weathered our financial storm and now I am pleased to say that our financial future is much brighter. We have watched new programs and affiliates flourish and, thanks to your support, we have been able to turn many of our dreams into realities such as the start of our pre-school and the creation of Shoresh. It truly has been an honor to serve as your president and I have been blessed to have had an incredible team to work with. To our Rabbis, Cantor, and Executive Director, thank you for putting your faith in me. It has been a privilege to work with you. To my Executive Committee and Board of Trustees, no words can express the gratitude I feel for you. I am forever indebted to you for your dedication, support, and friendship – we have accomplished so much together! And last, but most importantly, the biggest thanks goes to all of you, our members. Thank you for giving me this wonderful opportunity. You have taken this journey with me and I appreciate all of your support and kind words of encouragement. Whether it was to stop me and offer your help with current Temple activities, comment on my latest Scribe article, or to ask me how my kids were doing and how marathon training was coming along, you were always there for me and I will cherish our bonds. It is a bittersweet moment as I move on to the next chapter of my life but I am looking forward to continuing to help make a difference in this special place. I am looking forward to seeing so many of you over the summer at Food, Fun & Fireworks and at Service Under the Stars where we will install our new board and our new president. In the words of our prayers, sung so beautifully by Debbie Friedman, of blessed memory, “May we be blessed as we go on our way. May we be guided in peace....” I hope I have served you well.
