Course Title: CTEL Preparation: Teaching English Learners Across the Curriculum, SDAIE, ELD and Culturally Responsive Instruction Instructor: Elizabeth Jiménez Course Description: The course focuses on the ‘how to’ and comes alive through Ms. Jiménez’s classroom visits and demonstrations, anecdotal descriptions, lesson modeling, use of jigsaw classroom cooperative learning techniques, inclusion of well-designed visuals, and numerous readings. Course participants take a culture quiz to appreciate cultural differences and their impact on student behavior in the classroom Sal Flores, a young Latino who recently earned a GED, also shares his perspective and experiences with participants. He shares why, as a youth, he was attracted to gang affiliation and offers some advice for teachers about reaching disaffected students. And, very importantly, the course showcases expert interviews with EL literacy author Dr. Gil Garcia, Bilingual Education advocate Dr. Maria Quezada, and Dual Language Teacher Cheryl Ortega. Throughout the course, participants engage in thoughtfully designed interactive sessions slotted for educator modeling, technique practice, QuickWrites, and a variety of cooperative learning activities. This course expertly provides teachers with the tools for planning, organizing, and implementing SDAIE Instruction including writing lesson objectives for content classes to meet both ELD and the California Content Standards. Rev. 02/17 Welcome Preparation for CTEL Tests 1, 2, and 3 Teaching English Learners Across the Curriculum: SDAIE, ELD, and Culturally Responsive Instruction This course is designed to give you the information and skills necessary to master the CTEL Competencies and to pass CTEL Exams 1, 2, and 3. It is strongly suggested that you take advantage of all of the practice, homework, and resources to ensure that you have the knowledge necessary to pass the CTEL exam. Please review the following steps included in each topic in this course. Completion of each of these sections is mandatory. 1. Pre- work: Read and review topic objectives, topic outline, key concepts and questions, and the interactive study guide questions. These pre-work steps will help to focus attention on important information and increase understanding throughout the course. 2. Topic videos with interactive activities: While viewing the videos, please take the time to complete the activities imbedded in this course to help gain a better understanding of the content. 3. Interactive Study Guide Questions: It is suggested that you review the questions you missed and review/reread the applicable sections of the topic presentation and the powerpoint slides. To ensure topic mastery, it is suggested that you rewrite your answers to the missed questions, print these answers out and use them to help prepare you for the CTEL exam. 4. Participate in the Discussion Board: Please answer the two questions presented for each topic and post your answers. Feel free to post additional comments and start your own discussion threads when appropriate. To better understand the information, it is suggested that you form an online partnership or study group. 5.
