M
y name is Ashley and I am 24
years old. I started riding about
six months ago when I took the
Rider’s Edge class for the first time and
haven’t stopped riding since. I bought my
new motorcycle in July! The way I started to ride was kind of a crazy story, it all
started last December when my husband
and I moved to San Diego. My father-inlaw planned a trip to Sturgis
so my
husband got an ’06 Sportster
to practice on before the trip.
I was stuck riding on the
back of it. After a few times
of riding passenger (with a
very numb bottom and an
aching back) I finally told
my husband that I wanted to
get my motorcycle license
and ride myself. At that
time he wanted me to take
surfing lessons, but instead
of paying for being cold
and wet for four hours, I
opted for being dry and on a
motorcycle for three days...
BEST DECISION I EVER
MADE! Once I finished the
course. I practiced on my
husband’s bike until the end
of July when I finally bought
my own. I still ride the
same bike, a 2009 Sportster
1200 Custom, but once I pay this one off
I’m looking to upgrade to a 2012 Fat Boy
(with a 103!!!!)...no not a Fat Boy Lo...a
Fat Boy! When I first bought the bike it
had just under 5000 miles. I’ve passed the
8000 mile mark in less than three months,
and I am planning on riding to Yosemite
at the end of this month!
As far as my family support,
I’m not sure if my dad has told my stepmom that I ride a motorcycle yet. She’s
never really been a fan, so needless to
say, I am the first woman in my family to
ever ride. However, I’m convinced it’s
in my blood because my dad rode a
motorcycle for a long time before I
was born.
In my short time riding I have
had some amazing memories. So far,

why I ride a Harley...friendship, fun,
and freedom! I’ve learned not

Cont. from page 1
After riding with Tomi, I learned to drop
my elbow, put my chin over my wrist
and step on the foot peg to really help get
around corners, and boy has it changed my
riding style and my confidence! Also, my
shoulders don’t hurt after 100 miles anymore
because I use my lower body when turning
instead of my arms.
One of the major things that I have
learned since I took the Rider’s Edge course is
to practice my U-turns!!! In the course I completely failed the figure 8 box. I hated it then
and I am pretty sure I’m still very bitter about
it and I vowed to never do a U-turn again...
until I rode with Coffeemate. We went on
an afternoon ride after a foiled attempt to go
to a shop in Escondido, and sure enough, we
ended up having to do a U-turn. Well, I ended
up doing the world’s worst U-turn in front of
others. The next day I went to an empty parking lot and practiced until I was blue in the
face! Now, I have no problems with U-turns!
To the women out there who are
thinking about riding: DO IT!! Don’t let your
fear take over. Don’t let others dictate your
life or tell you what you can or cannot do.
You are in control so hit the road and ride!
Ashley

My fellow HOG members, I need
your help!!
I'm running out of ideas for our
monthly newsletter. Anyone have
a child, parents, or grandparents
who ride? Did they have an impact
on your desire to ride? If so, do you
consider riding a kind of family tradition? I want your stories!!!! You
can send them to me via e-mail to
the address listed below.
Thank You!

Hello San Diego H.O.G. Members,
I.
Recently Brenda and I were riding up to spend the
day at the San Diego Wild Animal Park. We were cruising up
Hwy 67 when suddenly her sunglasses broke and flew off. We
pulled over at a safe spot, dug out a spare pair of sunglasses
from the saddlebags and got back
on the road. Later
that day, I had
a “senior” moment and laid my
sunglasses down
somewhere in the park and walked off without them. Fortunately I had multiple “extra” glasses for the ride home.
Moral to the tale: Carry multiple extra sunglasses for you and
your passenger (just in case.)
Don’t forget to carry clear glasses for night riding too! Because
of the time change on November 6th sunsets will soon be
close to 5:00 P.M. Protect your valuable eyes from sunlight,
wind, bugs, dust and debris!
II.
Remember any member may nominate a fellow
H.O.G. member for a Safe Rider Pin and recognition. See me
for the nomination form or pull it up on the San Diego H.O.G.
website and summit it to an officer. So if you see a member
stepping out above and beyond to keep our members safe
……. WE WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT!!!! Let’s give them
the recognition that they deserve.
III.
National and local H.O.G. chapters encourage all riders
(beginners or experienced) H.O.G. members or not, to take the
Safe Riders courses taught by the great instructors at the Harley Davidson Rider’s Edge Academy of Motorcycling. For more
information and registration call Paula Williamson at (619) 3226366 or contact her at
paula@sandiegoharley.
com. You’ll be amazed
at how much these
courses will sharpen
your riding skillsplus… it’s a lot of fun!!
IV.
Reminder: Everyone please fill out and carry on you,
your passenger, and /or on your bike the Emergency Information
Contact sheet. See me for copies.
V.
In the most recent H.O.G. Enthusiast Magazine (all
H.O.G. members get this magazine) there were two great articles I
hope everyone reads and remembers: “Between the Lines” article
regarding group riding dynamics and “Tire Talk”.
Safety is NO accident
Stay alert and ride safe.

HORSESHOES
The 1st Annual Multi-Chapter HOG Ride and
Horseshoe Tournament was held on October 08,
2011. The idea originated when our own Claude
M. ran into Bigg’s members Bill E. and Chris W.
one day while out riding and said "Why
don't we do a ride together?" While
Claude and I were discussing the idea I
said “let's play some horseshoes when
we get to the park." The idea was off
and running. The turnout was great.
Beautiful weather and great times were had by all.
Five local HOG chapters showed up
with members from Biggs, Sweetwater,
Temecula, El Cajon and San Diego. Each Chapter
was represented by two teams of two members. Team
ECETS (Raul and Lulu of the El Cajon Chapter) were
the big winners of the day. The Winner's Trophy
will be awarded to the El Cajon Chapter at their next
General Meeting.

When we got to Hollister, we quickly

trying to wedge ourselves into a table, two
of the Monterey Chapter RCs said “Screw

affected directly, while others it’s a cascading set of dominoes. Several dealerships
through the US have closed due to lack of
sales. Chapters attached
and supported by these
dealerships found themselves orphaned. HOG is
experimenting with dealerships sponsoring more
than one HOG Chapter.

Next year's California State HOG

It was quite a weekend, and certainly a
pleasure traveling with good
