Retail Intermediate Apprenticeship Level 2 This apprenticeship is designed to meet the needs of candidates who are starting their career as a sales assistant within the retail and distribution services; this could be within electrical appliances, furniture, entertainment, newsagents and post offices, food retailers and grocers, jewellers, charity shops and clothing/footwear stores. This qualification focuses on the skills needed for the candidate to be able to carry out tasks in relation to working a part of a team with an extensive range of units to choose from such as merchandising, deliveries, customer service, promoting additional services, taking payments, security and health and safety. Length of Qualification: 9-12 months The Framework Components of the Qualification: 1. NVQ Certificate or Diploma in Retail Skills Level 2 (QCF) This involves building a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate the candidate’s skills and competence. The Certificate in Retail Skills will need to consist of a credit value of 24, or if the Diploma in Retail Skills is taken, that will need to consist of a credit value of 37. 2. Technical Certificate in Retail Knowledge Level 2 (QCF) The Certificate in Retail Knowledge explores the underpinning knowledge within the retail environment. The candidate must achieve 14 credits for this qualification and will be obtained through unit examinations to test their knowledge and understanding. Element 1 and 2 will also include embedded learning in raising the candidate awareness on Employment Rights and Responsibilities. 3. Key Skills or Functional Skills • Application of Number at Level 1 (portfolio and multiple choice test) or Functional Maths • Communication at Level 1 (portfolio and multiple choice test) or Functional English Key skills are incorporated into the apprenticeship to help the candidate develop their transferable skills. The portfolio is built using relative industry models and situations to confirm their understanding. Candidates with transferrable skills may be exempt from this, but must provide original certificates to the assessor to show the level of their attainment. 4. Personal Thinking and Learning Skills This element will support the candidates ability to apply their skills in the workplace as a creative thinker, develop their team working skills, make independent enquiries, self manage their workload, participate effectively and reflective on their journey. The Apprenticeship Delivery: The apprenticeship is carried out in the workplace with a qualified assessor who will help and support the individual through their qualification, also giving advice and guidance on techniques. The assessor will visit the candidate every two to three weeks in the workplace to guide them through their qualification and assess the candidate’s competence. There will also be taught input sessions to cover the criteria for the technical certificate. The candidate is required to sit examinations to complete some components of their apprenticeship. These dates and times will be arranged with the employer to suit business needs later on in the apprenticeship and will be held in the workplace under strict exam conditions.
