The Bangkok Skyride,Skypark and Lowline
Overview
The Bangkok Skyride is a 55km long elevated cycle lane which runs through Central Bangkok and out to the suburbs following the existing BTS train
system. Sections of the infrastructure will also house an elevated park space named the Skypark and also a Lowline which will hold various areas for
markets and urban gardens.
Structure
Both the Skyride and the Skypark will utilise the exising structure, drainage and electric systems of the BTS (Bangkok Transit System). Both the
cycle lane and Park Lane will be no wider than the existing stations - 3.5m wide each which complies with Bangkok’s lighting laws. Existing stations
will house bike parking, showers, changing rooms and w.c’s. The existing passenger tollways for the BTS will also be used as payed access. Extra
bicycle lifts will be constructed at several, but not all, stations in the inner city areas however the existing lifts will be utilised at suburban access points.
SkyPark and Lowline Areas
Native plants will be used in the SkyPark and Lowline. Elements of the designs between stations will reflect the communities it passes through. Local
communities will be commisioned to design Artworks and various parts of the park in a series of competitions. The Lowline will house areas for urban
gardens, retail and markets aswell as emergeny care units for trafic accidents.
A 5km stretch is proposed to be constructed first from Pleonchit to Thong Lo and will serve as a 3 lane cycle route and park.
