1 Institute of Jamaica Natural History Museum of Jamaica Earth Day Competition 2013 Theme: Water Conservation: Life’s Preservation General Rules 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. The Earth Day Competition is an Island-wide competition open to all secondary school students (from grades 7-13). Each student can submit up to five (5) entries and may also enter more than one category of the competition. All entries submitted must be done by registered students of a school. Each entry should be verified and authorized by the Principal, Vice Principal or a Senior Teacher. All entries must be accompanied by a declaration in writing from the Principal of the school that the works submitted are the original and unaided work of the pupils. An entry form must be affixed to each entry and should clearly state the school, name and form of the entrant Each entry submitted can be given an appropriate title by the entrant. Please also include one sentence describing your photograph. All entries must be addressed to:Education Department Natural History Museum of Jamaica Institute of Jamaica 10-16 East Street KINGSTON Entries should be submitted to the Institute of Jamaica no later than Friday, March 8, 2013. For further information call 922-0626 ext 352 or 247. Categories of the Competition Literary Arts Category 7. Entries for this category can be an essay, poem, short story or any other literary piece submitted by individual students that aptly reflects the theme. 8. Each piece must be given a suitable title and should address the theme in a holistic manner and from a global perspective citing relevant case studies/examples to enhance the piece. 9. A printed copy of the script/text of the piece, as well as an electronic copy on CD, should be submitted to the address above. Entries can also be submitted by email to education@nhmj-ioj.org.jm along with the printed copy. 2 NB: All essays and stories have a 2500 word limit and all poems should be no longer than 60 lines. Your word or line count should be indicated on the last page of the essay, short story or poem and sources of information should be properly referenced. Poster Category 10. Entries for the poster competition (not more than ten (10) from each school) should depict images related to the general theme and should be given an appropriate title. 11. Posters may consist of illustrations, painting and mixed media. All poster entries must be 18 inches x 24 inches (46 cm x 61 cm) in size. Photography Category 12. Each entry for this category must be a photograph measuring 8 inches x 10 inches (20 cm x 25 cm) in size submitted by an individual student that depicts the theme. Each photograph must be printed on photo paper and individually framed in mat board or other similar paper. An electronic copy of the photograph should also be submitted on CD or via email. Performing Arts Category (limited to one entry per school) 13. 14. Entries to this category can be any dramatic, musical, storytelling or other performing arts piece that aptly reflects the theme and is approved by the competition coordinators. DVDs showing students performing the piece must be submitted along with the corresponding text/script. Entries should be assigned an appropriate title and the performance should not exceed 7 minutes in duration. Display and Judging 15. Posters and photographs will be mounted for display and judging at the Natural History Museum of Jamaica (NHMJ) while essays and performing arts pieces will be sent to panels of adjudicators. Judging will be done between March 19 and April 3, 2013. 16. A selection committee appointed by the NHMJ will judge the entries and award prizes to the schools and students that, in their opinion, have submitted the best entries. Winners will be recognized at the Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, April 23, 2013. 3 17. The criteria for awarding points are as follows: LITERARY ARTS CATEGORY Content & Interpretation of Theme Originality & Creativity Presentation, Structure & Organization of Ideas Grammar and Expression - 35 25 20 20 POSTER & PHOTOGRAPHY CATEGORY Interpretation of Theme Creativity and Originality Artistic Quality Presentation & Finish - 35 25 25 15 - 40 30 15 - 15 PERFORMING ARTS CATEGORY Interpretation & Delivery of Theme Creativity and Originality Performance (characterization, projection) Stage presentation (use of space, props, costume/dress) 18. Entries should not be obscene, offensive, defamatory or libellous; the Institute of Jamaica has the final authority to select the entries that are appropriate for the competition. 19. 20. Entries that do not follow the guidelines listed above will be disqualified. The Institute of Jamaica reserves the right to keep entries for publication in the media as well as any other promotional and educational non-profit venture.
