Christmas Day Lunch in HTICU on WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 25, 2013
The next meeting will be our annual Christmas Day lunch – we start serving around 11 AM. It will be in the
HTICU conference room on the 5th floor of the West Pavilion. This is for pre and post transplant patients and
their families, medical and staff personnel on all of the heart, lung, and liver floors, those who are at the
Townhouse, and donor families who would like to participate. We need the help of those of you that live
in the Birmingham area to help provide the food. Please call Stan Smith at 205-655-3151 if you have any
questions [please leave a message]. The Support Group will be furnishing ham, turkey, soft drinks,
paper goods and plastic wear. We are in need of casseroles, vegetables, congealed salads, salads, and
deserts. Each year this does provide a blessing to those who are in the hospital especially during Christmas.
Last year we used over 450 plates! If you can spare a couple of hours on Christmas day, we really
could use your help serving. We look forward to hearing from each of you.

Check out the anniversaries this month: Apryl
Crosswy is 31 years post heart transplant, Rene
Boubede is 14 years post lung transplant and
Claude Hall is 16 years post liver transplant.
There are 31 people that are 10 years or more
post transplant – fantastic!
Remembering Farther Jim
Over the past 24 years, I have met many great
people in our transplant family. Father Jim
Naughton was one of those special people. He
received a liver transplant on December 24,
1996 and needless to say, Christmas was very
special for him. Over the past years, Farther

‘An Organ Donor Saved My Life’
This is the saying on a T-shirt that the AOC is using for a
fund raising project. With the funds generated by the
selling of the T-shirts, special gifts will be given to the
Donor Families in addition to the Bronze Medallion now
presented during the Donor Recognition Ceremony.
If you would be interested in a T-shirt, the cost will be $12
including shipping and handling (make checks payable to
UAB/AOC Educ. Fund).

Jim always attended the Christmas Day
Support Group Lunch at the hospital and
enjoyed talking with everyone.
He was an integral part of Team Alabama and
gave the benediction at the Opening
Ceremonies at the 2002 US Transplant Games
at Disney World. At the 2004 US Transplant
Games in Minneapolis, he participated in the
Donor Memorial Ceremony and delivered the
benediction at the Closing Ceremonies as
shown in the picture below. He spent much of
his time during the games counseling people.

 And remember to...
Most of all I remember him for his sense of
humor. He was always telling jokes or doing
something to make you laugh. One story about
how he loved to tease Nancy - he told her that
the liver was the only organ transplant mention
in the Bible. Naturally, she fell for it and asked
‘where does it say that’. He replied slowly
‘de….liver…us from evil’! This was followed
with a big laugh from Nancy and him.
Rest in peace my friend, rest in peace.
From all of the officers of the Support
Group, I would like to wish everyone HAPPY
HOLIDAYS and a very prosperous New Year.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS
