Chattanooga Community Kitchen—2014 Funds for Food Campaign The Community Kitchen serves nearly 200,000 meals a year. In addition, they offer services from job training to permanent housing, life skills to health services. The Kitchen now offers the necessary tools to serve the physical, social and spiritual needs of the area’s homeless and less fortunate—all because of you. Although these services are offered free of charge, they certainly cost a great deal. Including the cost of case management and supportive services, your gift of just $21 provides one person three meals a day for two days; $75 feeds an individual for a week; $300 for a month; and $3,600 for a year. If you would like to make a donation to the Chattanooga Community Kitchen, please mail your check to: Chattanooga Community Kitchen, P. O. Box 11203, Chattanooga, TN 37401. Good Shepherd/ Lookout Mountain. At the end of a very long and stressful week & I hope and pray, the end of more than a few scary and often terrifying days, I wanted to check in with you. My nosebleed began last Sunday, May 11, between the end of Christian Formation and the 10:30 Eucharist, as I headed towards the sacristy. Whoever knew a nosebleed could be so frightening? Never having had a nosebleed, I certainty didn't. But when it wouldn't stop and seemingly couldn't be stopped on Sunday and my blood pressure spiked to dangerous stroke levels (another problem I'd never had), I was really scared. As Joe Lantz wheeled me to the Erlanger East ER, and I asked him if I was going to be okay? Bleeding to death or a fatal stroke both seemed like possibilities. Joe assured me I was, but I didn’t believe him. The time in the ER was torturous, being injected with drugs I had reactions to and having my arms used as pincushions by overworked and weary nurses. Then with worries of stroke I was transported by ambulance to the ICU at Erlanger’s main campus. More work was done to stop the bleeding and bring my blood pressure down and late Monday evening, I was released from Erlanger to come home. By Tuesday afternoon, however, I was bleeding again, and Dr. Lantz sent me to the ER at Memorial, scheduling me for surgery first thing Wednesday morning. It didn’t really get worse, but the poking, prodding and searching, however, just continued. Not much sleep from Saturday night through Wednesday. Because of tests and surgery, I ate irregularly, if at all. Then there was the constant, ever present checking of vital signs –blood pressure and temperature—and the drawing of blood. I had surgery on Wednesday with Dr. Lantz spending more time looking up my nose than anyone should ever have to do. In the process he found the little capillary that had sprung a leak, way back and up in the deepest reaches of my nasal cavity. He cauterized that little sucker and a few others for good measure, put patches of asphalt and cement in (Not really!) and backed out. As they say time will tell. This is probably more than you care to know, but I wanted you to hear from me what I have been doing this past week. The last days have made me aware that any movements of our body have an impact on the nose. Accordingly, my activity levels over the next week or so will be restricted. Please keep me in your prayers and know I miss you all. Blessings and peace, Robert CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR OUTSTANDING GRADUATES Worship Sunday, May 25, Sixth Sunday of Easter Today’s readings are: Acts 17:22-31; Psalm 66:7-18; I Peter 2:2-10; John 14:1-14 The Flowers on the altar are placed to the glory of God and in loving memory of Dr. Eleanor “Nanoo” Stafford by Anne, George, Eleanor & Marshall Bright 8:00 am Holy Eucharist: Rite I The Rev.
