Alternet
Alternet, a project of the non-profit Independent Media Institute, is a progressive/liberal activist
news service, but contains broad enough information to be relevant to readers of many
persuasions. Launched in 1998, AlterNet now claims a readership of over 3 million visitors per
month. AlterNet publishes original content as well as journalism from a wide variety of other
sources.
AlterNet states that its mission is to "inspire citizen action and advocacy on the environment,
human rights and civil liberties, social justice, media, and health care issues." AlterNet's tagline

Common Dreams NewsCenter, often referred to simply as Common Dreams, is a 501(c)3
nonprofit U.S. based progressive news website. Common Dreams publishes news stories,
editorials and a newswire of current breaking news.
Common Dreams also re-publishes relevant content from numerous other sources such as the
Associated Press and writers such as Robert Reich and the late Molly Ivins. The website also

Huffington Post
Huffington Post is an American news website, content-aggregating, and blog founded by
Arianna Huffington, Kenneth Lerer, and Jonah Peretti, featuring columnists and various news
sources. The site offers coverage of politics, theology, media, business, entertainment, living,
style, the green movement, world news, and comedy, and has news, blogs, and original content.
The Huffington Post was launched on May 9, 2005, as a commentary outlet and alternative to
news websites like the Drudge Report. On February 7, 2011, AOL acquired The Huffington Post
for US$315 million making Arianna Huffington editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post Media

Mother Jones
Mother Jones (abbreviated MoJo) is an American independent news organization, featuring
investigative and breaking news reporting on politics, the environment, human rights, and
culture.
Mother Jones has been nominated for 23 National Magazine Awards and has won six times,
including for General Excellence in 2001, 2008, and 2010. In addition, Mother Jones also won
the Online News Association Award for Online Topical Reporting in 2010 and the Utne Reader
Independent Press Award for General Excellence in 2011. With a paid circulation of 200,000,
Mother Jones magazine is the most widely read liberal publication in the United States. Monika
Bauerlein and Clara Jeffery serve as co-editors. Madeleine Buckingham has served as Chief

Harris Jones, called Mother Jones, an Irish-American trade union activist, opponent of child

NPR
NPR, formerly National Public Radio is a privately- and publicly-funded non-profit membership
media organization that serves as a national syndicator to a network of 900 public radio stations
in the United States.
NPR produces and distributes news and cultural programming. Individual public radio stations
are not required to broadcast all NPR programs that are produced. Most public radio stations
