There are a number of exciting events coming up, including our Fall Membership Meeting on Tuesday, September 29, at 5:45 p.m. in the large meeting room of the Hilton Head Library, located at 11 Beach City Road, near the Hilton Head Hospital. Our featured speaker is Charleston attorney Peter Wilborn, the foremost expert on biking safety and laws in the Southeast, if not the entire country. He is a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker, and will share interesting personal experiences about his world-wide cycling travels and courtroom cases. I anticipate that among the topics he will discuss are two events that occurred in Beaufort County last spring: one in which a cross-country cyclist was ticketed for passing a car in an intersection and another in which an irate motorist on Bluffton Parkway got out of his car and confronted a female cyclist. There is no charge for the presentation, and soft drinks will be available. Hope to see you there. On Saturday morning, September 26, the Annual Pedal 4 Kids Community Bike Ride benefiting the Hilton Head Island Boys & Girls Club will be held, with the start and finish at Hilton Head High School. This is a charity bike ride for all ages and abilities. Rides of 62, 40, 25, 20, 10 miles, as well as a family fun ride, will be offered. Our mayor, Town Council members, and hundreds of other cyclists will participate. This community bike ride was a factor in the decision by the League of American Bicyclists to award Hilton Head Island the silver and, more recently, the gold, Bicycle Friendly Community award.
