2016 CPA Alberta Tax Clinic Program
Each spring, from March to April, our tax volunteers dedicate a few hours of their time to help
those in need complete their tax returns. The rewards are worth it! They include sincere
appreciation, the feeling of having made a difference within the community.
The 2016 Tax Clinics run March 7 to April 15.

Eligibility for Co-op Students and University Accounting Students
Co-op students and University accounting students may be eligible to volunteer to prepare
tax returns at the tax clinics as long as they have completed a University level personal tax
course; have previous experience completing personal tax returns; attend a tax clinic
orientation session; and have a designated professional accountant (CA, CMA, or CGA)
to accompany them at a tax clinic.
If you are a co-op student or University accounting student and you do not know a designated
professional accountant, we will try our best to pair you with a tax clinic mentor to help show
you the ropes and answer any questions you might have on-site.

Assistance
To assist volunteers in dealing with the most common situations, guidelines and sample
returns will be posted online. We will also hold orientation sessions in Edmonton and Calgary
to brief volunteers on preparing these kinds of tax returns. The session is mandatory for all
co-op and University students.

Tax Software
Thanks to Intuit, our corporate partner for the CPA Alberta Tax Clinics, our volunteers will
receive a copy of ProFile tax software for use at the Tax Clinics.

2016 Tax Clinic Challenge!
Challenge another accounting firm or organization to see who can prepare the most returns.

2016 Tax Clinic Program
Each spring, from March to April, our tax volunteers dedicate a few hours of their time to help those in need complete their
tax returns. The rewards are worth it! They include sincere appreciation, the feeling of having made a difference, and the
knowledge of having enhanced the reputation of Accounting Professionals within the community.
The 2016 Tax Clinics run March 7 to April 15, 2016. There are several ways in which you can participate.
Complete Personal Tax Returns On-site
Help low-income Albertans complete their 2014 tax return by attending a clinic in your community.
Act as a Tax Clinic Reviewer
A tax clinic reviewer is responsible to assist with troubleshooting on-site, answer volunteer questions, and perform quality
assurance on the tax returns completed. We are currently looking for 30 volunteers in Edmonton and Calgary to act as
reviewers. Reviewers will be assigned to priority clinics—sites which see more complex returns, higher volumes and/or sites
with primarily new volunteers.
In addition, reviewers in Edmonton will be placed at clinics hosted through the E4C’s Make Tax Time Pay program, where
they will review and perform quality assurance on returns completed by their volunteers (non-designated accountants).
Reviewers must have a minimum of three years of tax clinic experience; breadth of knowledge of different tax situations
(seniors, newcomers, families, students etc.); experience using ProFile tax software; and flexibility to travel to tax sites
throughout your city.
Act as a Tax Clinic Phone Support Volunteer
Phone support volunteers will act as an additional resource to volunteers who are “in the field” completing returns on-site by
answering questions related to completing personal tax returns—should the need arise. The number of individuals who sign
up as a phone support volunteer will determine how many clinic days volunteers are assigned to. It is estimated that each
phone support volunteer will be assigned between 2-5 clinic days. Individuals interested in volunteering for a phone support
position must have a minimum of three years of tax clinic experience; work experience in the tax field; attend a tax
information session; be available in the evenings from 6-9pm; and have experience using ProFile tax software.
Become a Tax Clinic Mentor
As a tax clinic mentor you will be paired with a co-op student or University accounting student at a clinic. Mentors are
expected to assist students in preparing personal income tax forms and answer any questions they might have on-site.
Individuals interested in volunteering as a mentor must have a minimum of three years of tax clinic experience.
About our Program

Returns are Fairly Simple
The returns completed at our tax clinics are generally quite simple. The clients have low income, no rental properties
and no business income. In most cases, there is no tax payable, but the individual needs to file a return in order to be
eligible for refundable tax credits, the GST credit, provincial and federal subsidies, and other tax benefits.

Assistance
To assist volunteers in dealing with the most common situations, guidelines and sample returns will be posted on the
Institute’s website. We will also hold optional orientation sessions in Edmonton and Calgary to brief volunteers on
preparing these kinds of tax returns. Please note that the training sessions held for volunteers will generally qualify as
verifiable CPD, as long as new learning is occurring.
