Preston Muslim Girls High School What is Urdu? URDU Urdu is a major language in many countries of the world. Most of people of Indian Subcontinent descent understand & communicate in Urdu. Our aim is to offer Urdu as a modern language to all students and it is a compulsory subject at PMGHS for Years 7 and 8. After this, an option is available for students to choose either Urdu or Arabic as a GCSE. The subject is taught by an experienced Urdu teacher with extensive experience in teaching Urdu at GCSE & A-levels. Urdu is taught twice weekly to all classes and develops reading, writing, speaking & listening skills of the students. We take pride in developing Urdu reading and writing skills in a creative & disciplined atmosphere. We understand that learning Urdu language is important for many within the community. Perhaps more importantly the study of Urdu makes young people more confident while expressing themselves & encourages integration. At all levels, our teaching maps to the national curriculum guide: each year, pupils read a wide range of novels, plays and poems, as well as non-fiction material. Writing arises naturally out of reading: reading and writing are inseparable companions, and pupils write in a wide variety of genres and formats for a variety of audiences. Key Stage 3 Key stage 3 starts with learning alphabets, phonetics & basic grammar skills. Pupils enjoy listening & then reading short stories, games, role play based activities, both when reading plays, and also as creative activities. Key Stage 4 In GCSEs the Edexcel specification themes are followed to enhance the language comprehension of the students. These are taught through text books, novels, movies & role plays. The Urdu GSCE consists of four units based on speaking, listening, reading & writing. Each unit enables the students to further their skills and develop their understanding of Urdu. There is an examination to assess the ability of spoken Urdu which accounts for 20% of the total marks. A further 20% of marks are awarded for reading skills assessments assessed in a variety of contexts which is also assessed through an exam. There are two aspects to the controlled assessment tasks: • • 30% is awarded to students being able to communicate confidently in Urdu through written tasks. And the final 30% of marks is comprised of two speaking activities which last 4-6 minutes each.
