De 8 Module 1 Lesson 1
Here you’ll find the work for this week.
It is best to work through each session of the lesson in sequence. Languages are best learnt by doing
little and often, so the work is divided into sections (this week there are 2 sections) - it would be good
to do each section at a different time during the week (ie not all in one go!)
1.1 In this lesson, I’ll be talking about the seasons
I’ll be revising: vocab from year 7 German, common regular/irregular verbs in the present tense,
and verb at Place 2
St art er: To r em i nd y ours el f of fre et i me act iv it ies …..,
Go to http://gut.languageskills.co.uk/beginner/year8.html,
click on Free time, then on Was machen wir?, and work through the
Unjumble the sentences
(Use Vocabulary p22-23 to help, and refer to the dictionary pages at the back of your textbook
if you need extra help)
Echo 2, ch 1 Die Ferien
p6, Hören 1
Listen to the audio. How much do you understand? Most of the language should be familiar to you from Year 7,
but remember to use the dictionary pages at the back of your textbook for words you are not sure about. Can
you match the activities to the different seasons in 1-4?
Challenge 1:
What do you remember about word order in German? Look at the paragraph again and see!
Clue: Where/at which place in the sentence do we find the verb? What effect does this sometimes have
on other words in the sentence?
REMEMBER:
•
In German the verb must usually be situated at PLACE 2 in the sentence.
eg Ich gehe in die Stadt.
1 2
•
This means that sometimes we have to swap round the verb and the person/pronoun
eg Im Winter gehe ich in die Stadt. (We have swapped round ich and gehe)
1
2
(NB even though Im Winter is 2 words, it counts as one place because it is expressing one idea)
Go to www.languagesonline.org.uk.
Click on Deutsch, then work through the activities in the Beginners’ Unit:
Time phrases in sentences
p6, Sprechen 2
Was machst du im Winter? Now can you answer the questions, saying what activities you do in the different
seasons. Remember to check your word order: Verb at Place 2!
Challenge 2:
What verbs did you use in these sentences? What is a verb? What do you remember about verbs in
German? Clue: What happens to their spellings?
REMEMBER:
•
A verb is a doing word or an action eg to play, to go….
•
In German verbs can be regular or irregular
•
Most verbs in German are regular (weak verbs). This means that they follow a pattern
•
Regular verbs end in e when they are used with ich, eg ich heisse, ich finde, ich spiele
•
Regular verbs end in st when they are used with du, eg du wohnst, du trinkst, du gehst
•
Regular verbs end in t when they are used with er/sie/es/man, eg er spielt, sie trinkt, man geht
Two Regular verbs to learn:
spielen – to play,
gehen – to go
ich spiele – I play
du spielst – you play
er spielt – he plays
sie spielt– she plays
man spielt – one/you/people play
ich gehe – I go
du gehst – you go
er geht – he goes
sie geht – she goes
man geht – one/you/people go
p6, Lesen 3
Read the text about Chrstian’s freetime activities during the year. Then complete sentences 1-10 on p7.
Challenge 3:
What do you remember about irregular verbs in German? Look at the text about Christian’s freetime
activities - Can you see any?
Clue: What happens to the spellings of irregular verbs? (NB: These are also known as strong verbs)
REMEMBER:
•
•
•
•
Some verbs are irregular.
Their verb endings are just like regular verbs
BUT their verbs stems (the first part of their spelling) don’t always follow the same pattern as the
infinitive. We need to check these carefully. Eg ich lese BUT du liest; ich fahre BUT du fährst.
It is the verbs which match with du and with er/sie/es/man which change their stem spelling
Three Irregular verbs to learn:
(Look at the stem changes carefully!)
lesen – to read,
fahren – to travel
ich lese – I read
du liest – you read
er liest – he reads
sie liest– she reads
man liest – one/you/people reads
ich fahre – I travel
du fähst – you travel
er fährt – he goes
sie fährt – she goes
man fährt – one/you/people go
sehen – to see/watch
ich sehe – I see/watch
du siehst – you see/watch
er sieht – he sees/watches
sie sieht – she sees/watches
man sieht – one/you/people see watch
p6, Lesen 3
Now look back at your answers and check that you have used your verbs correctly. Look at the verb endings and
the verb stems! Have you remembered them accurately?
Go to www.languagesonline.org.uk.
Click on Deutsch, then work through activities 12 (NB: Weak verbs = Regular verbs)
and 13 (NB: Strong verbs = Irregular verbs) in the Beginners’ Unit:
Hobbys und Freizeit
1.2 In this lesson, I’ll be talking about the weather in German
p7, Hören 4
Look at the weather symbols in the blue box, and read the descriptions! Then listen to the weather for each of the
cities listed - what is it like? Jot down your answers, then listen again to check!
Go to http://gut.languageskills.co.uk/beginner/year8.html, click on The weather,
and work through any of the exercises
p7, Sprechen 5
Now give your own weather descriptions! Use the information in each of the pictures given.
p7, Lesen 6
Here 4 people are describing their favourite season! They talk about the weather and about what they like to do.
Can you work out which season it is each time? Jot it down.
FOR YOUR TUTOR!
p7, Schreiben 7
Now use the short descriptions in Lesen 6 to help you give your own short account of your favourite season! Use
the suggestions in the blue box to get you started, and make use also of the vocabulary and language from this
lesson. Send your work to your tutor for checking! Remember to head your work up properly with your name, the
lesson number (1.1) and the date.
Most weeks you will have some German words/phrases to learn. You will need to take several days to
learn them and you should test yourself every couple of days. At the end of the week, ask someone
else to test you too. Sometimes you could try writing them, sometimes try saying them.
Wörter (words), p22
This week you should learn and test the words on p22 in the sections:
Die Jahreszeiten, Was machst du? and Das Wetter
You should also revise your verb endings for present tense verbs, and you should learn your
common irregular verbs from this lesson!
