Course Description: The study of college-level grammar and punctuation and their
relationship to stylistics. The student will study the rules that govern English and create
examples. The student will compose short compositions in a variety of modes, making
sure to use the elements of the sentence, the paragraph, and the short essay. This
course is intended to strengthen the student's knowledge of English structure.
Course Objectives: On completion of the course, the student will demonstrate the

Know and use the grammar rules to create simple, compound, complex,

Know and use the punctuation rules that govern any kind of English
sentence.
Know and use stylistic rules to create clear, concise, and smooth prose.

Participation: Students will be expected to present their own examples of correct
writing in the class.

Attendance Policy: There is no distinction between excused and unexcused absences.
If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to obtain assignments from the instructor. If
you have a valid reason for missing a class, please inform the instructor ahead of time.
Following departmental policy, a student may miss no more than three classes (one
class per credit hour per semester). After three absences, a note will be sent to the
Academic Dean, informing him/her that your attendance is not acceptable and
excessive absences may affect your grade.
Cheating and Plagiarism: Any student found guilty of cheating on an exam or
plagiarism on a speech, paper, or project may be dropped from the class, receive an "F"
for the class, receive an "F" for the assignment, or any combination of the above. The
instructor has the authority to dispose of the violation as he or she determines. The
student(s) involved may appeal to the Faculty Judicial Committee if he/she feels that
the instructor's actions were unfair.
Disabilities: It is the student’s responsibility to inform the instructor of special needs. I
will do everything possible to provide special services in accordance with federal, state,
and university guidelines.
Support Services: If you are having difficulties with the course, please feel free to meet
with your instructor. If you cannot meet with me during set office hours, I will arrange
alternative meeting times. Also take advantage of tutoring services available through
the Teaching Learning Center (TLC) and Student Support Services.
****Late assignments will not be accepted unless you have made prior
arrangements with your instructor.
