Hagemann, Teaching Grammar: A Reader and Workbook Course Description: The study of college-level grammar and punctuation and their relationship to stylistics. The student will study the rules that govern English and create examples. The student will compose short compositions in a variety of modes, making sure to use the elements of the sentence, the paragraph, and the short essay. This course is intended to strengthen the student's knowledge of English structure. Course Objectives: On completion of the course, the student will demonstrate the ability to: 1. 2. 3. Know and use the grammar rules to create simple, compound, complex, and compound/complex sentences. Know and use the punctuation rules that govern any kind of English sentence. Know and use stylistic rules to create clear, concise, and smooth prose. Competencies: The competencies addressed in this class are writing and analytical and critical thinking. Tests and Exams: Research & Writing = Tests and Quizzes = Class Participation = 20% 40% 40% Participation: Students will be expected to present their own examples of correct writing in the class. 1 Attendance Policy: There is no distinction between excused and unexcused absences. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to obtain assignments from the instructor. If you have a valid reason for missing a class, please inform the instructor ahead of time. Following departmental policy, a student may miss no more than three classes (one class per credit hour per semester). After three absences, a note will be sent to the Academic Dean, informing him/her that your attendance is not acceptable and excessive absences may affect your grade. Cheating and Plagiarism: Any student found guilty of cheating on an exam or plagiarism on a speech, paper, or project may be dropped from the class, receive an "F" for the class, receive an "F" for the assignment, or any combination of the above. The instructor has the authority to dispose of the violation as he or she determines. The student(s) involved may appeal to the Faculty Judicial Committee if he/she feels that the instructor's actions were unfair.
