We have enjoyed a year of major change at ELA, starting last September with a brand new uniform, a new name, a new pastoral system (VT and Houses), new branding and academy status. This was followed by a “Good” Ofsted inspection and then a fast moving and re-written Academy Improvement Plan to take us on our journey towards becoming “Outstanding.” We have very much enjoyed our partnership within the DALP Trust over the last twelve months, and continue to work closely with our colleagues at Retford, Tuxford, National and Holgate Academies. Staff from ELA have taken part in school improvement activities across all subjects from within our curriculum offer, seeking to raise standards in all areas of work. I have marvelled at the energy, enthusiasm, skills and abilities of our staff and students over the last twelve months. It is a real honour and a pleasure to be the Principal of such a positive and forward thinking group of staff and students, very ably supported and challenged by our Governing Body. The new academic year will see one further change, namely, our timetable structure. We are moving to a one week timetable, with each day having 6 x 50 minute lessons. The “window” of our school day has not changed at all, with an 8.45am start to lessons and a 3.15pm end to the school day. BEING ON TIME REMAINS A SCHOOL PRIORITY. All students are required to be on time for all lessons and school based activities. Dress Code: Thank you to all parents and students who have respected our new dress code. July 2013 The biggest single problem has been some girls wearing skirts that are far too short. For September we have introduced a “standard and acceptable length” guideline. This will allow for skirts to be worn just above and/or just below the knee. The second most frequent problem has been some students not wearing black shoes. Students will be closely checked for uniform, as from the start of term in September. I will be sending home any students who do not conform to our dress code policy. Studs: These are NOT to be worn in school please. This includes nose studs, eyebrow studs and any other form of piercing. This regulation is the same for tattoos. Start of term: rd Tuesday 3 September – staff training day th Wednesday 4 September – Year 7, 12, 13 students only th Thursday 5 September – all students in school for an 8.45am start (in correct uniform) “Thank you and farewell”: this newsletter contains information with regards to a number of staff who leave us this week, either to move on to new posts, or to retirement. We wish them all the very best of good luck and good health for their future. Finally, thank you to all staff, students and parents for making ELA the very special place that it is to work and to go to school. We have a truly unique and caring community of young people, their parents and staff. Have a great holiday. G A Legg Page 2 of 3 Staff Leaving July Newsletter Sam Johnson We are very sad that Mr Johnson will be leaving us at the end of the year but we are also very proud of him as well. He will be starting a teacher training at School Direct (History), University of Nottingham Kirk Hallam Community Technology and Sports College. Mr Johnson has made a big impact in the school in his time here as a member of the curriculum support team. We are sure that he was born to teach and we wish him all the very best as he begins his training. Andy Taylor Andy Taylor leaves us after 21 years’ service. Andy joined as a Part time teacher and soon became full time Head of Drama. He was a head of year for three years and then became Head of Performing Arts Faculty. In recent years Andy has been part time head of Drama. Throughout the years at our school Andy has always approached his subject with great passion and enthusiasm both inside the classroom and in the range of successful performances the school has enjoyed. Andy’s passion for using Drama as a vehicle for developing young people’s self-confidence has resulted in so many of our young people benefiting from his inclusive approach. The energy, experiences and student centred approach which Andy adopts are just a few of the qualities which our school will miss greatly. Paul Andrews Paul Andrews has dedicated 31 years of his life to the teaching profession. He has inspired many with his passion for history and his tireless support of students’ learning. Students past and present actively seek him out for further words of wisdom as they have ultimate respect for Mr Andrews. He will be truly missed by all in our school. Mr Andrews is also noted for his great support of the Labour Party and he has represented them in local standings in the past. A trawl through Google reveals that there are two other Paul Andrews’ of note; interestingly both politicians and both Labour members! His light-hearted and entertaining teaching style, coupled with his cutting banter and sense of irony, really do set Paul apart. When one investigates the historical etymology of his name; “Paul” means “small” and “Andrews” means “manly”. Let us not forget this “small man” in our hearts and wish him a long and enjoyable retirement! We salute you! Mrs J Hardy The MFL faculty would just like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution Mrs Hardy has made to both the work of the faculty and the Academy in general during the past 4 and a half years. Mrs Hardy has dedicated a lot of time to her students she has taught and many of them have commented on the good progress they have made under her tutelage. This is testament to the rigour she has brought to the classroom as well as the ever present sense of humour to which ELA children have been accustomed. We would also like to thank her for the support she has given to the numerous trips throughout her time in the school. We wish Mrs Hardy a long and happy retirement! Mr R Morris Mr Morris is leaving having taught at East Leake Academy for 2 years. He has made a positive contribution to the English Faculty and the wider Academy community. His media expertise has been an asset to the faculty. He has proven popular with the students and has engaged them with some exciting lessons. As a tutor, Mr Morris has counselled and cared for his tutees, helping them through the ups and downs of life; sharing his wisdom and giving valuable support. Page 3 of 3 July Newsletter Staff Leaving His contribution to East Leake Academy has been much appreciated and we wish him every success in the future. Darren Summers Mr Summers leaves us after two years of hard work in the Biology Department. We wish him well in his new role as Assistant Co-ordinator of Science at Nottingham University Samworth Academy (NUSA) which starts in September. Throughout his time at East Leake Academy, Mr Summers has proved to be a very popular teacher and has embraced the role of Form Tutor as well as being involved with many House and sporting activities. He will be missed by staff and students alike. Good luck and thank you. Robert Marchewka Mr Marchewka leaves East Leake Academy after a year with us in the Chemistry Department. We wish him well for the future and thank him for his hard work this year. He has supported students from Year 7 through to Post-16 Chemistry and this has been clearly recognised by students and other teachers in the faculty. Mr Marchewka has been a popular Form Tutor and has always been keen to be involved with activities across the wider school community. Thank you for your efforts this year and good luck for the future, Mr Marchewka. Mrs E Gobey We would like to thank Mrs Gobey for her work within the MFL Faculty during Mrs Marciani’s maternity leave. We were lucky to get Mrs Gobey back at short notice and we appreciate the fact the students did not suffer further disruption. Mrs Gobey’s ability to teach French and German has been incredibly helpful and we wish her all the best in her future career. Mrs K Hickman We would like to thank Mrs Hickman for all her hard work this academic year during Mrs Golden’s maternity leave. Mrs Hickman has made a full contribution to the MFL faculty and the Academy, including accompanying trips to Paris and Amiens. We greatly appreciate her commitment to all her KS3 students and also to her success as an Eagle form tutor. Best wishes to Mrs Hickman in her future career. Governors’ Note New Structure of Governance The change to Academy status has provided an opportunity to revise the structure of governance, review the way the Board carries out our business and ensure we are effective and efficient in our mission of supporting the Academy, while challenging the management to continually improve. The new Academy Board structure and information on the groups that support it will be published on the Academy website soon, together with information on current Board members and how to contact governors. Testing our Effectiveness Governor Mark is a nationally recognised standard that measures the effectiveness of school and academy governing bodies. The Academy Board has decided to use this as a benchmark against which we will test our performance, identify areas for improvement and make appropriate changes. Page 4 of 3 July Newsletter Governors’ Note The Board will continue to carry out its usual business while this process goes on and as a consequence it will take through 2014 before the Governor Mark review is complete and we can apply for the quality mark. Your Feedback The Academy Board has made plans to ensure it understands the experiences of and attitudes towards the Academy, of our major stake holders. The governors and Academy management have worked together to launch surveys among students, parents and staff. By the time this item is published the surveys for staff and students will have closed and the one, involving 300 parents chosen at random, will be well under way. The University of Keele administers these surveys independently of the Academy and will report back to us. The outcomes will be published on the website and all parents invited to an open meeting next term where the results will be discussed. The Board has also reviewed how we can improve communications between governors and parents. We will be launching another survey later this year, this time to all parents, asking them to vote on the methods of communication they would most prefer from a number of options. recently, at the last meeting of the term, we reviewed our progress and looked forward to 2013/14. A report on the governors’ year will be published on the website in the coming weeks. Roy Adams, Chair of Governors July 2013 10 Year Anniversary We have now occupied the new school site, for 10 years. We still feel extremely lucky to occupy such a lovely building. Here’s to the next 10 years! Awards Evening July 2013 Comings and Goings The most recent addition to the Board of governors is Sarah Evans. Sarah joins us having had experience in the governance of primary schools and is already making a significant contribution to our work. Four governors will come to the end of their period of office over the next three months. All have given us exemplary service and our thanks for many years of support go with them. We are actively seeking new governors, so please read the governor vacancy information on the web site and think about joining us. End of Year Review and Targets for Next Academic Year. At the start of this academic year the Board held a series of three strategy workshops to set our short and medium term objectives. Very A packed hall of students, parents and teachers thoroughly enjoyed a very successful awards evening recently. Over 100 students received awards as shown below. Mr Legg commented on how proud the Academy was of the hard work, positive attitude and achievements of all concerned. We were very lucky to have as our guest of honour Angela Hannah, GB canoeist and London 2012 athlete who gave a very inspirational address about her journey to becoming one of the K4 500m crew at last year’s summer Olympics. Following this victory, they went on to represent ELA at the DALP Quiz Competition. Our team was superb, winning the first question and being the first team to put points on the score board. Their run of success continued till half way, with the gap between ELA and the other three teams ever-widening. The 1 ½ hr coach journey to Retford Oaks was an experience in itself. Eagle House Quiz Team members either sat quietly, trying to recall all the information they had learnt, whilst others entered into rounds of quick-fire questioning. In the second half, Retford Oaks challenged ELA’s lead but even this was only momentary. Victory went to East Leake Academy. Well done to Eagle House for representing ELA so professionally, and to all the supporters who also proved to be great ambassadors for our school. The supporters – comprising of Miss Paxton, all four Heads of House, Quiz Team members from Osprey, Kestrel and Harrier, and other House members from across all four houses – watched on, either offering advice on how to respond to questions, singing songs or sitting quietly. On arrival at Retford Oaks, and after some light refreshments in their library, we were escorted to their main hall where the scene was set. East Leake Academy had the largest, and most enthusiastic, supporters by far and from the onset of this event we cheered and spurred our team on. The focus of the project will be on promoting local events and activities, development of ‘apps’ to support local projects and make communicating with young people more effective. For example, interviewing people at the Rushcliffe Community Awards, creating a promotional video, and tweeting from the launch of the new Young People’s Centre in West Bridgford. A vacancy became available as the current representative will be moving into Year 11 - In total there were 14 students from the Academy who were put forward for the selection process. This was narrowed down to 3 candidates. The final interview process was initiated by Rusclliffe Borough Council, and Sean McVerry 9KLTE has been selected to represent East Leake Academy. Congratulations and well done! Page 10 of 3 July Newsletter Former Sixth Form Student My name is Kirsty Thomson and I left East Leake Academy at the end of June 2012 having completed my A-levels in Textiles, Psychology and Business Studies. I have gone on to study Saddlery at Capel Manor College in Enfield, North London and am currently half way through a 2 year course. I found out about this course through a magazine article about equine professions. The course takes 14 students each year and is the only full time Saddlery course in Europe. The focus is on hand crafting tack for horses from scratch e.g. headcollars, bridles, harness and saddles as you can see from the pictures. You learn the traditional skills of working with leather which entails hand cutting and hand stitching. These skills can be used to make any leather item. I have made a personalised dog collar, belts, bags, tool pouches and mobile phone covers at personal request. I am currently working on a commission for a saddle and bridle for a hand carved rocking horse. At the end of the 2 years I will come out with a Cordwainers Diploma in Saddlery and will be a qualified saddler. I intend to set up my own business producing bespoke equine items keeping alive tradition skill. However, the Year 10 football team continue to dominate opposition and won both the South Notts Cup and the County Cup competitions. There have been good performances from many of the school’s students. The best of which were the students below that competed at the County Championships In the South Notts final they comfortably beat Carlton Academy 5-0. However in The County Cup they met their match against Trinity but won 4-3 on penalties after a goalless 120minutes. Top Link Primary Festival On Thursday 27th June over 150 excited Primary school children were entertained and looked after by 50 ELA Year 10 Sports Leaders. Each of the youngsters took part in 5 activities throughout the morning. The leaders managed very well on the day and showed excellent nurturing and leadership qualities. Reflective comments from the Year 10 Leaders demonstrated they had learnt a great deal during the day. ‘I didn’t realise looking after kids was so tiring!’ ‘These little ones are crazy, I’m sure we were never like this’. ‘Can we do this again?’ ‘We’ve changed what we were doing because it wasn’t working’ Tom Harrigan 100m 12.10secs Jack Pollock 200m 26.2secs Charlotte Humphreys 200m 29.3secs & Long Jump 3.47m Adam Clift Long Jump 3rd 5.10m Joshua Faulks High Jump 4th 1.50m Steph Cobb 800m 5th 2.44mins & 1500m 3rd 5.37mins Jess Rattray could not run as she was on the Paris trip but has been selected to represent Nottinghamshire at the Nation Champions. Well Done Jess! Sports Day 2013 On a hot day the competition was fierce to win the first East Leake Academy Sports Day Cup. The result, with generous points awarded, was going to make all the difference as to which House won the overall House Competition. On the day Eagle House won the Year 7 and 9 age groups while Osprey won the Year 8 and 10 age groups. Even so, Harrier were consistently strong coming second in all age groups. In doing so, they won the Sports day Cup and the overall School House Competition. Congratulations to Harrier! Sports Awards The annual Sports Awards were once again held at Rushcliffe Golf Club. Over 100 ELA students gathered and celebrated each other’s sporting accomplishments. Alex Gray, Josh Parry and James Southwell organised and performed music for the night. The school choir also sang a couple of numbers that all helped make the evening a special occasion. Maria Bertelli who performed at London 2012 shared her experience of preparing for the Olympics and made a fantastic speech. With this in mind everyone expected the match to be a very close and difficult match for both teams. The crowd were not disappointed from the start with both teams showing why they had reached the final with ease. The battles in every part of the pitch were even and engaging to watch as the ebb and flow of the match continually switched with both teams enjoying spells of outstanding play. Despite the score being 0-0 at full time the game was exciting to the final whistle with both teams coming close and hitting the woodwork on several occasions. The match went into extra time with both teams knowing that one goal would probably clinch the win. Following some attacking play by East Leake Academy during the first half of extra time the match looked like it would finally swing in their favour, However during the second half of extra time Trinity were awarded a penalty! East Leake Academy must have thought at this point the game would slip out of their grasp. Trinity took their penalty well hitting the target, but Jack Woodburn’s diving save stopped the shot to keep East Leake Academy’s hopes alive. The game finished 0-0 after extra time which meant only one thing, a dreaded penalty shootout! Who would be victorious? Both teams took fantastic penalties with no player missing the target throughout. It was a night for the goalkeepers to make themselves a hero and both Trinity and East Leake Academy goalkeepers made one save during the regulation first five penalties. Sudden death loomed and when East Leake’s Giserd Marqeshi scored their first sudden death penalty The Trinity knew that they would have to score. Trinity player gave them a chance by hitting the target, however they were denied by another diving save from the hero of the hour Jack Woodburn to win the game for East Leake Academy. East Leake’s players went crazy piling on top of the hero goalkeeper starting their celebrations. Commiserations to Trinity who were more than worthy finalists narrowly missing out in such a dramatic way. This year William Lee and Jay Anderson have made an excellent contribution to learning, especially the spiritual and moral development of students. They have also been running a lunchtime and afterschool club called ‘Rock Solid’. The club provided students with the opportunity to take part in extracurricular activities and it has proved particularly successful in helping some less confident students develop their socials skills. Will and Jay have also been running a church based group in East Leake on Tuesday afternoons. This group was separate from school, but a number of ELA students have been attending. The feedback from those students has been excellent. East Leake Academy would like to thank Will and Jay and YFC for their excellent contribution to the life of the school this year. We hope this valuable relationship will continue into the future. Mr L Roberts Test Match Art Competition Winners – We won all 3 categories! We were thrilled when three students from East Leake Academy won in all three categories of the Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club competition to design a poster commemorating the Ashes series between England and Australia.
