How to obtain information about a college Consult college guides, catalogs, college websites and resources in your high school guidance office as you begin your college search. When you find that a certain school appeals to you, request more information. Attend college fairs in your area and meet with the college admission representatives when they visit your school. Most important, plan to visit the college campuses. Why you should visit campus Websites, brochures and other materials can provide basic information on a college, but it is only through an actual campus visit that you can truly experience a college’s environment and decide if that college would be right for you. Take along an unofficial copy of your high school transcript and ACT/SAT results so that when you meet with an admission representative they can give you an indication of your chances of being accepted at that school and if you would be eligible for scholarship consideration. When to plan your visit Plan, if possible, to visit when school is in session so you can get a picture of what everyday life is like for a student at that school. It may be possible to sit in on a class, talk to a professor or meet with a coach, in addition to meeting with an admission officer and taking a tour of campus. If you cannot visit the school during the academic year, try to plan your family summer travel so that you are near the area of the school. Call ahead and arrange an appointment to visit the campus while you are nearby.
