THE BOOKS OF THE ODYSSEY
THE BOOKS OF THE ODYSSEY
Book 1 | SEARCHING FOR THE FATHER
(rhapsodies: α, β, γ, δ)
It has been ten years since the Trojan War ended and Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, has
not returned to his island yet. His family does not know if he is dead or alive. In the
meantime, a mob of suitors have overrun Odysseus’ palace and while devouring his
estate in Ithaca they are courting his wife, Penelope, in hopes of choosing one of them as
her husband. Telemachus, Odysseus’ only son, under the instruction of Athena, travels to
Pylos and Sparta to seek tidings of his father’s return…
Book 4 | RETURN TO ITHACA
On the completion of his narration, Odysseus does not forget to mention the descent
to Hades, the passage through the rocks of Scylla and Charybdis, the devastation
following their departure from Thrinacia, the island of Helios. The following day
Odysseus sails to Ithaca on the ship of the King Alcinous. As soon as he arrives a number
of adversities await for him but also a pleasant surprise…
Book 5 | THE RECOGNITION
Book 2 | SAVED BY THE PHAEACIANS
(rhapsodies: ε, ζ, η, θ)
Following Zeus’ orders, Calypso lets Odysseus –after having confined him for seven
years in her island– return to Ithaca. However, Odysseus’ voyage back to Ithaca is not
without trouble. Facing Poseidon’s wrath for one more time, Odysseus’ raft is wrecked
and after many hardships our hero finally reaches the island of the Phaeacians. There,
Nausicaa, King Alcinous’ daughter, nourishes him and the King promises to help
Odysseus return to Ithaca.
Book 3 | FROM THE CICONES TO CIRCE
(rhapsodies: ι, κ)
Alcinous, king of the Phaeacians, hosts Odysseus in his palace and promises to help
him return to his land Ithaca. He asks from Odysseus to narrate him the adventures that
he and his companions had the late ten years after leaving Troy. Odysseus willingly starts
a long and fascinating narration about the Cicones, the Lotus-Eaters, the Cyclopes,
Aeolus, the God of wind, Laestrygones, nymph Circe…
(rhapsodies: λ, μ, ν)
(rhapsodies: ξ, ο, π, ρ, σ)
Odysseus, after Athena’s intervention, reveals himself only to his son Telemachus. Even
Eumaeus his loyal servant, who has not recognised his master, offers shelter to
Telemachus and Odysseus at his hut. Later Penelope offers Odysseus her hospitality
without having realised that the «beggar» is her husband. Father and son plot the death
of the suitors.
Book 6 | ODYSSEUS΄ REVENGE
(rhapsodies: τα, υ, φ, χ, ψ, ω)
Odysseus΄ nanny Eurycleia, who has now aged, recognises him. Odysseus reveals his
identity to three more loyal servants as he is going to need their help. Penelope
announces her decision to marry the man who can string her missing-husband’s bow.
None of the suitors can accomplish such a feat, except for the «beggar», Odysseus, who
then takes revenge of all troubles the suitors have caused to his family. Penelope and his
father, Laertes, live those joyful moments they have longed for twenty years and the
narration is completed with tributes of gratitude to the Twelve Gods.
