This is the first time that the famous epos is adapted into a graphic novel developed in six books. Each one includes a completed story as it incorporates a certain number of rhapsodies. Tassos Apostolides was born in Salonica in 1947. He studied Mathematics. In the early 80’s he became known as a comics’ scriptwriter, adapting Aristophanes’ comedies for comics. He has written scenarios for comic-strips, CD-ROMs, DVDs, as well as short one-act theatrical plays and texts for stand up comedy. George Akokalides was born in 1946. He has been working as a graphic designer and a comic illustrator since 1971. His family does not know if he is dead or alive. In the meantime, a mob of suitors have overrun Odysseus’ palace and while devouring his estate in Ithaca they are courting his wife, Penelope, in hopes of choosing one of them as her husband. Telemachus, Odysseus’ only son, under the instruction of Athena, travels to Pylos and Sparta to seek tidings of his father’s return… Book 4 | RETURN TO ITHACA On the completion of his narration, Odysseus does not forget to mention the descent to Hades, the passage through the rocks of Scylla and Charybdis, the devastation following their departure from Thrinacia, the island of Helios. The following day Odysseus sails to Ithaca on the ship of the King Alcinous. As soon as he arrives a number of adversities await for him but also a pleasant surprise… Book 5 | THE RECOGNITION Book 2 | SAVED BY THE PHAEACIANS (rhapsodies: ε, ζ, η, θ) Following Zeus’ orders, Calypso lets Odysseus –after having confined him for seven years in her island– return to Ithaca. However, Odysseus’ voyage back to Ithaca is not without trouble. Facing Poseidon’s wrath for one more time, Odysseus’ raft is wrecked and after many hardships our hero finally reaches the island of the Phaeacians. There, Nausicaa, King Alcinous’ daughter, nourishes him and the King promises to help Odysseus return to Ithaca. Book 3 | FROM THE CICONES TO CIRCE (rhapsodies: ι, κ) Alcinous, king of the Phaeacians, hosts Odysseus in his palace and promises to help him return to his land Ithaca. He asks from Odysseus to narrate him the adventures that he and his companions had the late ten years after leaving Troy. Odysseus willingly starts a long and fascinating narration about the Cicones, the Lotus-Eaters, the Cyclopes, Aeolus, the God of wind, Laestrygones, nymph Circe… (rhapsodies: λ, μ, ν) (rhapsodies: ξ, ο, π, ρ, σ) Odysseus, after Athena’s intervention, reveals himself only to his son Telemachus. Even Eumaeus his loyal servant, who has not recognised his master, offers shelter to Telemachus and Odysseus at his hut. Later Penelope offers Odysseus her hospitality without having realised that the «beggar» is her husband. Father and son plot the death of the suitors. Book 6 | ODYSSEUS΄ REVENGE (rhapsodies: τα, υ, φ, χ, ψ, ω) Odysseus΄ nanny Eurycleia, who has now aged, recognises him. Odysseus reveals his identity to three more loyal servants as he is going to need their help. Penelope announces her decision to marry the man who can string her missing-husband’s bow. None of the suitors can accomplish such a feat, except for the «beggar», Odysseus, who then takes revenge of all troubles the suitors have caused to his family. Penelope and his father, Laertes, live those joyful moments they have longed for twenty years and the narration is completed with tributes of gratitude to the Twelve Gods.
