Poverty, homelessness, violence and disaster surround us; the news is filled with acts of destruction in which humanity is involved. At the same time, people of faith speak of a God who is intimately involved in the world and pass off such acts with simplistic phrases such as “God’s will”. While it might help us to justify our actions, this oversimplification makes God out to be one who lacks compassion and sets some people above others. The faith of Jesus teaches us that, rather than abdicating our responsibility to some “out there” entity, we are to be in partnership with God who makes us agents of God in the here and now. This understanding challenges us to personalize our faith and to co-create with God. Thank you for joining us today at Cathedral of Hope as together we ponder this essential question. Where is God? Join the conversation at #7Questions and #cohdallas. Blessings, The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas, Senior Pastor H O P E Quotes “I am one of over 800 mothers of gay children who are part of a FB group. We recently saw the post of you in a “discussion” with another pastor, a rude man who has his own version of the truth. We stand with you, are grateful for you, and all wished we lived close enough so we could come to your church. Thank you for showing the love of Christ to all of our children. We will be praying for you.” —M.B. STAFF Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor seniorpastor@cathedralofhope.com Rev. Dr. Alberto Magaña Associate Pastor albertom@cathedralofhope.com Rev. Together we confess the brokenness Christ came to heal. All: God of all our questions: We do have so many questions about where you are and how you work. Sometimes, we become so convinced of our own ideas of how you work that we miss seeing you where you are. Too often, we serve you with our lips instead of with our whole lives. We intend to follow you wherever you go, but often we do not. Steadfast God, please give to us the same Spirit as Christ, that we might see you where you are as you break into the world in unexpected ways, and follow you wherever you lead us. Help us to love and embrace all the questions in us and in others. Thank you for never giving up on this world or on us. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE 2 One: God is doing a new thing: transforming our questions into revelations, our fears into courage, and our tears into joy. We are God’s people—a people blessed by divine forgiveness and abundant love. Thanks be to God! All: Amen. 2 GRADUAL Choir: Holy Spirit lead me to the wilderness, beyond the music, beyond the noise. Thanks be to God. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. Christ was with God in the beginning. Through God all things were made; without God nothing was made that has been made. In the beginning was life, and that life was the light of all humankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. The Light and Word became flesh and made its dwelling among us. We have seen its glory, the glory of Christ, who came from God, full of grace and truth. One: All: ANTHEM This is the Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ, the Word. The Glory of the Creator Worship Note below Words adapted from John 1; Music by Egil Hovland Sanctuary Choir SERMON Seven Essential Questions Where Is God? Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas The Glory of the Creator Our Anthem, written in 1957 by Norwegian composer Egil Hovland, uses as its text excerpts from the prologue of John’s Gospel. The opening words of John—The Word became flesh and dwelt among us—serve as the beginning and end of Hovland’s stunning yet simple piece. The music in these sections employs a chant-like structure, open and hollow, but also somehow full. The second section takes on more life and movement. “In Christ was life and that life was the light of all,” builds dramatically before tapering off on the words “He came to his own, and his own received him not.” Hovland (1924-2013) was born in Råde, Norway, and studied at the Oslo conservatory. His many compositions include two symphonies, a concerto for trumpet and strings, and numerous works for organ. He was one of the most noted church composers of Norway. 3 3 LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS Everlasting God OFFERTORY Words and Music by Tom Fettke based on Psalm 139 Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra THE GREAT THANKSGIVING FOR LENT INVITATION TO THE TABLE WORDS OF INSTITUTION Rev. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus’ name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God’s feast for all peoples. We don’t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers’ direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself—take a wafer and dip it in the juice—in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. 5 5 MUSIC DURING DISTRIBUTION Jesus, Draw Me Close Jesus, draw me close, closer, Lord, to you. Dear Sisters and Brothers, Join the Sanctuary Choir for Holy Week! (March 29 - April 5) As they began to make Dallas their home, they first rented a small apartment bringing with them only bare necessities. In April, they will all move into their new home. Many in the congregation have asked what they can do to help in the transition from apartment to house. A small group has been formed to assist in the coordination needed to make a house a home. The music of Holy Week—Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday—is some of the most beautiful of the Christian liturgical calendar, ranging from the pomp of Palm Sunday, through the mystery and sadness of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, to the triumph of Easter morning. The Cathedral of Hope Sanctuary Choir began rehearsing music for this special time of year o n S a t u r d a y, February 27. If you’ve always thought about singing with the choir, this is the perfect opportunity to join us without a weekly commitment. Below is the special rehearsal schedule for Holy Week and Easter. If you’re able to attend the rest of these rehearsals, we’d love to have you sing with us! Reverend Neil will celebrate his first year as Senior Pastor at the Cathedral of Hope in June, having accepted the Call in April of 2015. Purchases will be made through the courtesy of an interior designer, who is not charging, to secure wholesale furniture prices available only to designers. Donations can be made to Cathedral of Hope with the memo area of the check marked “House Warming.” Online gifts should be marked the same way. Affluence Insurance Services Why do we change language at Cathedral of Hope? Comprehensive Insurance Services for You and Your Business Mark Bigham Insurance Cathedral of Hope is a place of radical inclusion. It is one of our key core values. As a church that is vibrant, inclusive and progressive we choose to use inclusive language which means that we affirm and celebrate the many images of God that are found in Scripture. Using inclusive and balanced language enables us to understand God more accurately and encourages us all to explore the vastness of God beyond gender and gender identity. Mark Bigham Principal/Agent 214.838.6180 | 281.292.4900 m.bigham@pacificcrestinsurance.com AN AFFILIATE OF PACIFIC CREST SERVICES, INC. The truth is that most lyrics of songs and translations of Scripture were written in another age, and they are riddled with sexist language which uses patriarchal/masculine images of God/Christ. We change language here at Cathedral of Hope to open ourselves up to the diverse nature of God who is beyond gender and to the risen Christ who is most uniquely expressed through the Holy Spirit with us—both feminine and masculine. As a spiritual community we encourage one another to stretch our imagination and to both celebrate and affirm the God who made humankind, both female and male, in the likeness and image of God. ($10) Scary Close After decades of failed relationships and painful drama, author Donald Miller decided he’d had enough. Impressing people wasn’t helping him connect with anyone. He’d built a life of public isolation, yet he dreamed of meaningful relationships. So at forty years old he made a scary decision: to be himself no matter what it cost. From the author of Blue Like Jazz comes a book about the risk involved in choosing to impress fewer people and connect with more, about the freedom that comes when we stop acting and start loving. And it all feels like a conversation with the best kind of friend: smart, funny, true, important.
