ROYAL AND HISTORIC COPENHAGEN
From vile Vikings to ancient castles and palaces inhabited by real kings and queens, cobblestone narrow
streets, old timbered houses and a certain sculpture of a little mermaid. Copenhagen is a modern day fairytale
with a happy ending. Copenhagen oozes of history and effortlessly combines old and new, preserving its 1,000year old history yet always looking to the future with open arms, hearts and minds.
A HISTORIC CAPITAL
Copenhagen became capital of Denmark in 1167, when
Bishop Absalon founded the city. Over the following
years herring fishing brought great wealth to Copenhagen and, under the reign of King Christian IV in the
17th century, the city grew to become the important
regional capital it remains today. With a population of
1,9 million, it is the largest city in Scandinavia.
derstand the otherwise very modern and democratic
Dane’s love of their royal family, one needs to look at
our national identity. Denmark is a small country with
a population of merely 5.5 million people, and many
Danes perceive the royal family as moral protectors and
representatives of our nation and way of life.
Another reason why Danes love the royal Danish family
and especially Queen Margrethe II, is because she has
always been very relaxed and down to earth.

CENTRAL HOTEL AND CAFÉ
The story of the little house is that from 1905 until the
2nd World War, it was a shoe repairer. In 1920 the 1st
floor was built and the shoe maker moved in and lived in
the 12 square meter apartment. Since the 1980s it’s been
a goldsmiths and a cafe.
The idea behind Granola was to create a cafe that looked
like it was started in the early 1900’s and got stuck in the
40’s. At Granola our waitress serves coffee and breakfast
from 07:00 am on Mon – Fri and 09.00 at weekends. As
well as our extensive breakfast menu, we serve lunch,
dessert, milkshakes, fresh juice and smoothies. Granola
is also one of the only places in Copenhagen you can be
served homemade Rødgrød (a big hit with tourists).
The idea behind Central Hotel and Café is, that when
you enter the little house it’s like going back in time. It’s
an experience and at the same time you become a part
of the local community. When guests arrive at the hotel
fresh flowers, fruit and wine will be waiting for them
in their room. There is also the possibility of making
fresh coffee. Breakfast is served between 07:00 am to
12:00 pm at Granola. This way guests get to experience
Værnedamsvej and all it has to offer.
We are open until 24.00 every day.

WALLMANS
WALLMANS DINNERSHOW: AN INTERNATIONAL
AND UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE
Today Wallmans Dinnershow, that includes a spectacular,
international show, a delicious 4-course meal and nightclub, is the main activity in the Circus Building – right in
the heart of Copenhagen.
In 1982 the Circus Building was thoroughly renovated.
That led to highlighting the distinctive architecture of the
building with the enormous dome, the arched corridors,
the festive lobby, the coloured seating and the special
circus atmosphere. Meanwhile, everything was given a
highly successful, extra touch with the unique colours selected by the well known Danish architect Verner Panton.
Since 2003, Wallmans has entertained more than
750,000 guests in the Circus Building. In contrast to traditional Danish plays and musicals, Wallmans Dinnershow
is international. Every guest, regardless of nationality and
language, can be bowled over, entertained and thrilled.
After the restoration the Circus Building was listed.
It is also possible to rent the unique and atmospheric
spaces of the Circus Building for your own event,
party, dinner, press conference etc. Capacity: 40-1,000
participants.

Copenhagen is a city full of creative minds and Copenhagen has a ton of places
you can go to fill your mind, body and soul with new impressions.
The atmosphere of Copenhagen is creative and trendy.
If you are interested in art, whether it is music, performance art like dance and theatre or the visual arts like
paintings, sculptures, and architecture, Copenhagen
has it all. Copenhagen is also full of fashion and designer shops, cool and urban bars and restaurants and
lively boroughs where the locals hang out. If you want
to experience creative Copenhagen, you must go to the
districts: Nørrebro and Vesterbro.
most fashionable places in Copenhagen – not just to
live – but to shop, eat, drink and have a great night out.
Along Vesterbrogade and Istedgade, where you will
find the original red light district on the first stretch
from Copenhagen Central Station and up, you will find
plenty of bars, restaurants, and designer stores.
NØRREBRO
Nørrebro is vibrant, colourful, casual and young at heart.
Nørrebro is a lively area of Copenhagen. You will find
trendy bars and fashionable designer shops next door
to dodgy dive bars and cheap kebab places. If you are
into small design shops, head for Elmegade or Jægersborggade, and if you like antiques Ravnsborggade is the
place to go. At Sankt Hans Torv and the streets around
it you have several choices for dinner and drinks. And at
Assistens Cemetery you can visit the grave of famous
Danes or do like the Nørrebro citizens and relax in the
cemetery park or get active at architectural Superkilen.
VESTERBRO
Vesterbro is the infamous red light district and former
working-class area of Copenhagen and is actually one
of the hippest areas in the Danish capital. In 2001, Wallpaper magazine proclaimed Vesterbro Copenhagen’s
hippest quarter. However, the turnaround really began
with the transformation of the old cattle market Øksnehallen into a light and stylish exhibition hall. The district
is situated within walking distance of Copenhagen city
center, right behind the Central Station. It is one of the

NIKOLAJ KUNSTHAL
“I’M NOT A CHURCH”
Nikolaj Kunsthal, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Centre
is located in the former St. Nikolaj Church which originated in the early 1200s and is Copenhagen’s third oldest
church. After the Great Fire of Copenhagen in 1795, the
building’s history as a church came to an end in 1805.
Since then it has had numerous different functions including, being a fire station, a naval museum and a public
library. In 1957 the art pioneer Knud Pedersen founded
an art library in the building where works of art could be
borrowed. The building has played a key role for contemporary art in Copenhagen ever since. Throughout the
60s it was the site of major avant-garde manifestations,
including some of the first international Fluxus happenings in 1962. Since the mid 90s Copenhagen Contemporary Art Centre has developed a strong profile focusing
on innovative and experimental contemporary art.

EUROVISION ISLAND
The site for Eurovision Song Contest 2014 is an industrial area, Refshaleøen, which was once
a huge shipyard. Now, Refshaleøen is home to many office spaces, activity centres and even
some restaurants. Here are some of the top activities and places to see on Eurovision Island.
FROM INDUSTRY TO NEW CULTURAL DISTRICT
The old Danish shipyard B&W Hallerne is the venue
of the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. The place once
employed thousands of men and was the domain of
the world’s leading shipbuilding company. Today, it is
a unique and edgy framework for music, culture and
events.
The long term plans for Refshaleøen are for the island
to develop into a new neighborhood close to the sea
and the city center of Copenhagen. Music and cultural
events taking place there will drive this urban development forward.
If you wish to go on a guided tour at The Eurovision
Island, see booking details in the Head of Delegation
Handbook.
The shipyard closed down in 1996 following many
years of economic difficulties. Today, B&W Hallerne is
used for storage of props for the Royal Danish Theatre
and house a climbing area and obstacle course for
people with no fear of heights. The rest of the island
of Refshaleøen is home to both industrial and creative
industries.

tradition for mountaneering and rock climbing. To meet
the need from an ever growing climbing community, the
Danish Alpine Club and the Municipality of Copenhagen
has built its own indoor mountain called Blocs & Walls.
Blocs &Walls houses up to 600 persons and apart from
pure climbing championships, it is often used as a different location for events like fashion shows, charity events
and teambuilding activities.
The world class climbing gym also features a fitness centre, a cafe, a shop, and event and conference rooms available for anyone with an interest in a new and different
venue. The conference rooms houses up to 40 people
and have all neccesary AV equipment.
So prepare yourself to get impressed the first time you
walk into the newly opened, state-of-the-art climbing
hall of Blocs & Walls. Beautifully bright and airy, designed
by pricewinning architects and leading climbing experts,
Blocs & Walls is Scandinavia’s biggest climbing centre.
The walls range in difficulty from beginners to the elite,
and with over 2,300 square meters of walls you can be
sure it has something for everyone.
And of course Blocs & Walls also offers climbing courses
at any level, and climbing for members as well as for

You can swim in the clean waters of the city harbor, stay in a sustainable hotel, eat organic
and bike your way around the city. Copenhagen is truly a green capital.
DO LIKE THE LOCALS – GO BY BIKE
If you want to get around the city like a true Copenhagener there is no other way than to ride a bike.
Copenhagen is world famous for being a bike city, and
with good reason. 35 percent of Copenhageners cycle
to and from school or workplace. Architect and urban
planner, Jan Gehl, is world famous for teaching cities
such as New York how to plan for a bike culture – it has
even got a term: Copenhagenization.
Environmentally friendly hotels, bicycles, rickshaws and
battery-driven busses for transportation. Not to mention organic and sustainable restaurants and shops.
When you are in Copenhagen, there are plenty of ways
to be an eco-tourist. In fact, the ambitious green profile
of the city has a clear goal: The City of Copenhagen
aims to become the world’s first CO2 neutral capital by
2025. In 2013, the City of Copenhagen also won the
world’s biggest design award; an INDEX: Award for the
city’s Climate Adaption Plan and The European Commission has awarded Copenhagen the title of European
Green Capital 2014.
Copenhagen shares green solutions and ideas through
events, conferences and masterclasses during 2014.

MEET THE CITY BEES AND TASTE COPENHAGEN
In the heart of Copenhagen, millions of honey bees are
keeping the city green and flourishing. They are part of a
project that educates homeless people in urban beekeeping and honey production.
You will also have the opportunity to taste, smell and
touch the honey and pollen that the bees collect. Taste
how each part of the city tastes different.
City honey is unpolluted and exceptional quality. Some
of the products are even on the menu at Noma! The
bees are friendly and calm and our experienced guides
and beekeepers will make sure everyone feels safe and
comfortable.
You can meet the bees in Copenhagen’s exotic botanic
gardens, where they feast on over 9000 varieties of
plants. You can hop in a bee suit to get a closer look,
watch the bees’ fascinating behavior and find out how
honey is made and learn about how this project is helping the planet and the people of Copenhagen.
A trip to meet the bees and taste urban honey is a
unique and unforgettable way to get to know the city.
All profit from the visits support our social and environmental work with disadvantaged people in the city.

DOME OF VISIONS
IS THIS THE WAY TO BUILD AND
LIVE IN THE FUTURE?
The transparent dome is an envelope against the elements: wind, rain and snow cannot penetrate it. Thus, the
building within the dome is built with fewer construction
materials than otherwise required.
American futurist and architect Buckminster Fuller (18951983). He devised sustainable solutions decades before
people and pundits were talking about sustainability.
Dome of Visions is a modern form of the village hall.
Debates, conferences, exhibitions, symposiums, music,
lectures and much more fill the program of the building.
The Dome occupies one of the most central places in
Copenhagen, Søren Kierkegaards Plads – just next to the
Royal Library and the “Black Diamond.”
Dome of Visions aims to gather new knowledge about
alternative designs, building materials and ways of working together. It also challenges traditional thinking about
plazas, squares and empty urban spaces. Because the
dome is a temporary building, it can add unexpected life
to an urban space that might have been overlooked.
Dome of Visions is based on ideas developed by the

work and ensure a professional profile, Rub & Stub have
hired a kitchen leader, a chef and project manager.
By food waste we do not mean ‘garbage’ that is already
old and thrown away. We catch surplus goods before
they pile up in the corners. Surplus goods are goods
that shops cannot sell for various reasons due to e.g. the
demands of consumer culture – such as those discarded
for purely aesthetic reasons of standard shapes, or
surplus seasonal produce. A “single banana” out of its
bunch, curvy cucumbers, small leeks, lumpy potatoes or
Christmas foods thrown away after New Year. Everything
is completely fresh and edible food. Cooking with such
suddenly surplus goods is a natural challenge to our
kitchen. Everyday volunteers supported by chefs have to
be creative and come up with exciting and tasty recipes
to use what we have and what we get.
THE CONCEPT
Rub & Stub is the first restaurant in Europe to actively
battle food waste. By using surplus goods from the food
industry, Rub & Stub wishes to reduce waste of food in
Copenhagen and Denmark. Rub & Stub is run and developed by volunteers. Rub and Stub started with a group
of people having the idea that by making better use of
resources locally and engaging volunteers in a productive community, Rub & Stub could provide means for
positive development globally. So in Rub & Stub you will
find volunteers behind the bar, serving the food, and it’s
volunteers, who help cook the food. To support their

MARITIME COPENHAGEN
Copenhagen is a city by the sea with water running through the old canals, with lakes, beaches and
harbor baths. Indeed water is an ever present element, and most Copenhageners could not imagine
life without it. During the summer months, you will find Copenhageners seeking out the sun at the city
beaches and beach bars, swimming in the clean water inside the harbor baths and kayaking around the
canals. Even in winter, cool winter bathers dip themselves in the harbor.
VENICE OF THE NORTH
Copenhagen is constantly developing, and in recent
decades, modern architecture, like the Black Diamond,
the Royal Danish Opera House and the Royal Danish
Playhouse have shot up on the waterfront, not far from
the old house boats in Christianshavn.
Modified Little Mermaid only a few metres away on
Langelinie and a sister mermaid by sculptor Anne Marie
Carl Nielsen in front of the Black Diamond. The latest
addition to the Danish mermaid family is the male mermaid Han in the town of Elsinore, north of Copenhagen.
Residential areas like Havneholmen, the silos Gemini
Residence and Sluseholmen are some of the newest additions to the inner harbor and have earned Copenhagen the title Venice of the North, because you can park
your boat outside your house.
At the entrance to Copenhagen Harbour sits the city’s
iconic landmark and lady of the sea, The Little Mermaid, on her stone looking for her human prince. She
has been sitting there for almost 100 years, and in

HOLMEN
Holmen is a water-bound neighbourhood in Copenhagen, occupying
the former grounds of the Royal
Naval Base and Dockyards. Since
the early 1990s, the area has been
re-developed for other use as a new
district of the city, while the remaining naval facilities are confined to
the northernmost islet of Nyholm.
Today, the area is characterized by a
mixture of residential developments,
creative businesses and educational
institutions and remaining military
activities. Holmen is also home to the
Copenhagen Opera House which was
completed in 2005.

CHRISTIANIA
When in Christianshavn do not forget to visit
one of Denmark’s without doubt most popular tourist attractions, the freetown Christania.
Christiania was founded in 1971 by a group of
hippies who developed their own set of rules,
completely independent of the Danish government. The area is still very unique. It is a society
within a society, but open to the public – even
with guided tours. Christiania is a mixture of
creatively built houses, workshops, galleries,
music venues, cheap eateries and beautiful nature. At the entrance you will find signs indicating ‘do’s and don’ts’ in the area.

THE BLUE PLANET
If you are up for an afternoon, experiencing
at one of the amazing new architectural sites
along the waterfront, we suggest you head for
The Blue Planet – Northern Europe’s largest
aquarium and a unique architectural site. From
Christianshavn Metro Station it takes 10 minutes
to Kastrup Metro Station, and from here, you
can walk to The Blue Planet. The Blue Planet
has water on all sides and is intended to give
the visitors a feeling of being under water. The
new building has five “arms” from the center of
the aquarium. That way the guests can choose
their own way around the aquarium to see the
exotic animals.

THE ROYAL NAVAL MUSEUM
If you are up for an afternoon experience you might also prefer to stay in Christianshavn and visit The Royal
Danish Naval Museum. The Royal Danish Naval Museum shows the historic naval model collection, naval artillery,
ship decoration, marine paintings, nautical instruments, uniforms, submarine interiors and a children’s museum. If
you are into naval ships and sea battles, the Royal Danish Naval Museum is guaranteed to thrill you. It houses an
impressive historic collection of more than 400 ship models, depicting the development of shipbuilding over the
past 300 years. Your kids might like to board the children’s ship, a reconstruction of a Danish warship with huge
cannons ready to fire.

THE HARBOUR BATH AT
ISLANDS BRYGGE
If you come to Copenhagen during
the summer time head for a relaxing afternoon at the Harbour Bath of
Islands Brygge. Open air swimming
right in the centre of the city. Meet local families with children, beach boys
and regular swimmers alike. The quality of the water is checked daily and
has to be approved by the authorities
before swimmers are let in. There are
five pools in all, two of which are specifically for children. The shallowest
pool is 30 cm deep. The diving towers
are one, three and five meters high
respectively. There is a lawn in front of
the pool where you find lots of room
for picnics etc. Often this area is busy
until quite late with people BBQing,
enjoying a beer or listening to music.

The new beach area in Copenhagen
consists of an artificial island just off
the coast, forming a lagoon with toddlers’ pools and a 1,000-metre long
rowing and swimming lane. Three
narrow bridges connect the twokilometer-long island to the coast. At
one end of the island, there are sandy
beaches and sand dunes. At the other
end, you will find a boat harbour,
recreation grounds, playing fields, a
picnic site, promenade etc.
THE STANDARD
Located on the Copenhagen harbour front in the old custom house of
Copenhagen, the Standard offers new
wine in old bottles, from contemporary cutting-edge cuisine with a Michelin star, that respects the tradition
but isn’t afraid of boldly reinventing it,
to top echelon jazz music that courageously mixes the known with the
unknown, the old with the new.
With a completely new mode of operation, you will be able to experience
intimate jazz performances on the
highest international level and projects that will be curated, produced
and conceived especially and exclusively for The Standard.

NEW NORDIC

New Nordic is signifying the new massive wave of talent within gastronomy,
architecture, design and film, which characterizes Denmark in recent years.
The New Nordic kitchen has gained international appeal
around the world and today the kitchen is highly praised
internationally. The New Nordic kitchen is characterized
by its uniquely Nordic identity among the world’s greatest cuisines and by its commitment to organic, sustainable and local products. In something like ten years the
New Nordic Cuisine has been established as one of the
most innovative movements that the world of gastronomy has seen for decades. Naturally, Copenhagen is now
also a hub for international gastro tourism, with its new
vibrant cutting-edge restaurant scene, where demand
seems to keep outgrowing supply.
Paris and more recently the Danish architects BIG has
won several prestige projects. Not to mention Gehl Architects who have won several projects within reinvention of
public spaces amongst others key analysis and strategic
advice to The City of New York for programs that reclaim
space for people on numerous streets and spaces – including Broadway and Times Square.
Additionally, Danish movies and TV series, especially
the dark and thrilling kind, have attracted an immense
international audience in recent years. Despite how
dark the award-winning crime series The Killing was, it
also sparked an international interest in all things Danish
and a fascination with what has come to be known as
new Nordic Noir.
On top of that, Danish architecture and design is going
through a new golden age with internationally acclaimed
local architects and designers leaving their mark on Copenhagen and Denmark as well as the rest of the world.
Denmark has a strong and proud architectural tradition,
and Danish architects have been chosen for several highprofile cultural landmarks abroad from the Sydney opera
house to Spreckelsens Grande Arche at La Défense in
Together these creative fields all put a very significant
mark on the Danish capital region, making it a melting
pot for people with a creative or general interest in gastronomy, architecture, design and film.

THE CAPITAL
REGION

THE CAPITAL REGION
Photo: Christian Alsing
As the beating heart of Scandinavia, the Capital Region of Denmark is one of the world’s most desirable places
to live, work and study. Draped with historical monuments, beautiful nature and one of the planet’s best public
transport systems, the Capital Region of Denmark has everything the heart desires. And then some.
A CULTURAL GARDEN
Especially in the summertime various museums, adventure attractions and eateries offer a wide range
of events by representing the best of the North Sealand’s cultural life, making the ‘Copenhagen green front
garden’ into an attractive holiday destination. Here you
can find everything from medieval knights jousting to
the sound of thrilled children, to the latest trends in art
at the world-famous Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.
Or visit one of the many tiny handcrafted goods stores
spread out across the region, before you enjoy a traditional Danish lunch in one of the rural and historical inns
all over the region.
While the city of Copenhagen certainly is the urban center of the region, a short commute by train will land you
right in the green and historic northern sealand, where
undulating open landscapes mix with impressive forests
and large lakes. This is the playground for the Danish
kings and queens of old, with historic castles and hunting grounds now open to the public. It is also a dynamic,
modern and green center for science and education, and
a place where scientists, students and families from all
over the world come to work or study, and in many cases
end up settling down.
NATURE IS JUST A STEP AWAY
If you want to see where people from Copenhagen have
historically gone to spend their Sundays, visit Bellevue
Beach and the nearby Dyrehaven. Bellevue Beach is
known for its perfect sand, subtle waves and easy access
from Copenhagen. Just next to it Dyrehaven, with its
wide stretched plains and deep forests, is a great opportunity to see deer up close, and enjoy the silence of
grand nature. In the center lies the famous Eremitage
Castle with a spectacular view of great fields on one side
and Øresund’s waves on the other.
THE CAPITAL REGION HAS GREEN BLOOD
Every day, the people of the region work hard to make
the area even greener. The aim is that by 2015, one fourth
of all the public cars in the region are electric cars. A
massive project building a light train system to support the already extensive public transport system in
the region is underway, and more and more Danes use
the bicycle for their daily commute. The already famous
‘superhighways’ for bicycles have already proven to get
even more people to leave the car, and the concept is
internationally acclaimed.
