Maycomb Times January 13, 1937 Providing news & opinion to the citizens of Maycomb, Alabama since 1919 House Fire Destroys Maycomb Home by Ashley T In the middle of the night on Thursday December 29th 1936 during one of the biggest snow storms in Maycomb since 1885 Miss Maudie’s house started on fire. The cause was that her flue started it in the kitchen. The whole town came together to put out the fire. One of the bystanders watching the men put out the fire was a young Jean Louise Finch and she reports that “When I got outside Atticus told me to stay across the street and I could see all of the flames coming out of the chimney.” Jean Louise was standing with her brother Jeremy Finch who also talked about the people helping Miss Maudie getting her furniture out. Jeremy said: “I saw Mr. Avery on the top floor when the house was on fire. He Miss Maudie’s house on fire. almost didn’t make it out alive.” Yet, Miss Maudie didn’t seem too sad about losing her house. She says:” I’m not too sad about it. I didn’t really like that big barn of a house, I would have rather gone with something smaller for more room for my azaleas.” In the end everything turned out okay and no one got injured. Jean Louise Finch stated that “It was neat how the whole town came together to help out one another, even if they didn’ t like them very much.” He Said, She Said by Mia M On November 21st Tom Robinson was being tried for beating and raping Bob Ewell’s daughter Mayella. Mayella (19 and a half) said this was what happend: “I said come here and bust up this chiffarobe for me, I gotta nickel for you. So he came in the yard an’ I went in the house to get him the nickel and I turned around an ‘fore I knew it he was on me”. While Tom Robinson who is a picker for Mr. Link Deas testified saying Mayella asked him to cut up the old chiffarobe last spring and over a year ago and Tom testified saying: “she says for me to come in there and help her a minute. Well, I went inside the fence an’ looked around for some kindlin’ to work on, but I didn’t see none and she says ‘naw, I got somethin’ for you to do in the house th’ old door’s off its hinges an’ fall’s comin’ on pretty fast’ she motioned for me to come inside, and I went in the front room an’ looked at the door. I said Miss Mayella those hinges are alright. Then she shet the door in my face. The next thing I knows she’d grabbed me round the legs. She kissed me ‘side of th’ face. She said she never kissed a grown man before and what her papa do to her don’t count”. The trial turned out in favor of the Ewells and Tom Robinson was sent to jail. January 13, 1937 Page 2 Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I am not happy about the way people act towards others in our community. It’s not just how people are treating Tom Robinson; it’s about everyone acting racist and prejudice. Like after the trial when Bob Ewell told Atticus he was going to get him because Atticus made a fool out of him by telling people about how he treats his children. Also when Jem and Scout went to Calpurnia’s church they weren’t welcomed by Lula. They felt like they didn’t belong there. But they only got a taste of what some people feel everyday. Tom Robinson’s wife has Obituary been being harassed by Bob Ewell ever since the trial. When she walks to work they yell and throw stuff at her which has lead her to take the long way to work. She doesn’t feel safe walking around her own neighborhood. And to be honest I don’t know why anyone would feel safe. No wonder Arthur Radley doesn’t come out of his home, I don’t want to either anymore. I think people need to learn how to be more respectful of one another to make a good society. While he was trying to escape from prison. He would have made it if he didn’t have a disabled arm. He was married to Helen Robinson. He was a picker for Mr. Link Deas. He will be buried tomorrow at noon. He’s leaving behind his children and wife. The reason he was in jail was that he was accused for something he didn’t do. And he wanted to get out because he deserved freedom. He was a good man and a very hard worker. He didn’t like being accused and put in jail for something he didn’t do because of his race. He is very brave for standing up for himself and what he thinks is right. His wife thinks that he should have waited a little bit longer since the court was thinking about repealing his charges of crime that he didn’t commit. Tom was a great man and will be missed greatly by everyone in the community in this town of Maycomb.
