Overall, the Warhawks have posted a 7-11 record against their cross-divisional foes since joining the Sun Belt Conference for the 2006-07 campaign. Both of the Warhawks home conference losses in the current campaign have come against Sun Belt Conference East Division foes - South Alabama and Troy. Scouting the Golden Panthers More closely resembling a MASH unit than a basketball team, a rash of injuries have kept the FIU roster in a constant state of flux. Guard Josue Soto returned to the Golden Panther rotation last time out, but FIU was without the services of leading post Freddy Asprilla due to a back injury. Michael Dominguez has provided the lone constant for a Golden Panther offense that has seen 10 different players start at least one game this season. Dominguez has started all 21 games for FIU and averages 11 points per contest. Five different players average 10 or more points per game. The Golden Panthers enter play on Saturday with a deceptive 8-13 record. Fielding a roster with as many walk-ons (6) as scholarship athletes (6), the Golden Panthers have picked up wins in three of their last five games including a two-point victory over Western Kentucky. The lone blemishes during the stretch each come via a 5-point margin - at Middle Tennessee and against North Texas last time out. Something to Watch For Depending on the availability of FIU freshman center Freddy Asprilla, Saturday’s game promises to feature a match-up of two of the top true post players in the Sun Belt Conference. In league play, Asprilla ranks first in total rebounding (11.0) while Warhawk sophomore center Rudy Turner ranks third (8.8). Turner has converted on 54 percent of his shots from the field this season while Asprilla has in turn connected on 52 percent of his. Matching a pair of underclassmen, the potential match-up between Turner and Asprilla could be a preview of a battle that brews for the next three seasons. Something to Watch For - Part 2 While the play in the post will grab most of the headlines, the point guard position features an interesting matchup. Both ULM and FIU feature a walk-on point guard who has fought his way into a starting position in his second season with his current team. Standing at 5-8, Warhawk junior Kenneth Averette runs the ULM offense and leads the team with 71 assists (compared to 42 turnovers). Lining up across from him, the 5-10 Nick Taylor leads FIU with 75 assists and 35 turnovers. Averette holds a slight advantage in scoring average, scoring 1.7 more per game (5.8 - 4.1), but Taylor has helped more on the glass and averages 1.8 more rebounds per game. Taylor also averages 10 more minutes per contest for the short-handed Golden Panthers. Something to Watch For - Part 3 FIU’s Alex Galindo has made a career against the Warhawks and is averaging a team-best 22 points per contest in the two games between the two programs. After missing the first 12 games of the campaign with an ankle injury, Galindo is back in the FIU starting line-up and leads the Golden Panthers with 15.4 points per game. All-time, the transfer from Kansas is hitting on 53.8 percent of his shots against the Warhawks. The Series with FIU ULM has raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the all time series against the Golden Panthers after winning the annual meeting since joining the Sun Belt Conference for the 2006-07 campaign. The Warhawks hold matching 1-0 marks in both Miami, Fla., and Monroe, La. Both games have come by narrow margins with ULM holding an average advantage of five points per contest. The Last Game in the Series Jonas Brown hitting a diving lay-up as time expired to help the Warhawks snap an 0-6 start to Sun Belt Conference play and give ULM a 68-66 win in Miami, Fla., over the Golden Panthers. The Warhawks never trailed and led by as many as 14 points in the second half, but a career-high 34 points from Alex Galindo including 29 in the second half - helped FIU fight back and tie the score at 66-66 with 11 seconds remaining. Tony Hooper finished with a team-high 20 points - including 16 in the opening half - while Brown added 14 and Lance Brasher scored 11. Russell Hicks scored 15 points and added eight rebounds off the bench while Galindo added a game-high 13 boards. The Last Game in the Series in Monroe, La. ULM hit on 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to pull away from FIU in a close 77-69 victory inside FantEwing Coliseum during the 2006-07 campaign. Clinging to a one-possession lead with under two minutes remaining, the Warhawks locked down on defense and limited the Golden Panthers to 2-for-6 shooting to claim the victory. Jonas Brown scored a team-high 19 points in the victory to pace four Warhawks in double digits while FIU’s Chris Fuller matched him with 19 points. A crowd of 3,817 watched ULM improve to 9-0 on the season inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum and maintain its hold of the West Division’s top slot in its first campaign in the Sun Belt. Up Next The Warhawks weren’t at home long before being sent back on the road. ULM gets a week off before traveling to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to face preseason Sun Belt Conference-favorite Middle Tennessee on January 31. After the bout with the Blue Raiders, the Warhawks return home where they will play three of their next four games inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. Starting with the game at Colorado on December 23, Gilbert has hit at least two 3-point attempts - a streak of nine-consecutive games • Junior Malcolm Thomas has started 14-consecutive games for the Warhawks after coming off the bench in ULM’s first five games. Since joining the starting line-up, he has attempted 10 or more field goals in all but three contests, including two of the last five [at Denver and against South Alabama] • Junior Malcolm Thomas scored a game-high 20 points in two-consecutive Sun Belt games. Four of Thomas’ 20-point performances have come against league foes • Junior Jarvis Hill has started 19-straight games for the Warhawks to start his career. He is the only player on the team to hold the honor of starting every game this season • Sophomore Mitchell Hampton has gone 4-of-18 from the charity stripe in the 14 games since a career-best 6-of-9 free throw performance in the first meeting with McNeese State. His season free throw percentage has dropped to .345 since the McNeese State game ULM Men’s Basketball • FIU Notes % .947 .917 .870 .864 A Lot on the Line One of the Sun Belt’s top free throw shooting squads, ULM has been particularly tough in the final two minutes of games this season. The Warhawks are converting on 81.8 percent of their free throw shots during that stretch (54-66). Junior Kenneth Averette leads the team in makes (17), attempts (19), and percentage (89.5) during that stretch, but is followed closely by junior Dynile Forbes’ 87.5 percent clip during the span on 14-of-16 shooting. Junior Malcolm Thomas has also been strong down the stretch, hitting on 8-of-9 free throw attempts in the game’s final two minutes. In a road win against Florida Atlantic on January 22, ULM clung to a one-possession lead down the stretch by converting on 11-of-12 free throws in the game’s final minute. Getting Offensive ULM sophomore forward Rudy Turner has provided a load for opposing defenses all season long, but has been particularly tough on the offensive glass in conference play. Through eight league games in 2008-09, Turner leads the conference in collecting offensive caroms after pulling down 4.50 per contest - more than a full board better than his closest competition. Turner hasn’t been alone on the offensive glass for the Warhawks. Fellow sophomore forward Lawrence Gilbert ranks 10th in the conference with 2.13 offensive rebounds per game to help the Warhawks rank second overall on the offensive glass. Heating Up Coming in the coaching staff believed the junior wing Dynile Forbes would provide the offensive punch off the bench, but an early injury slowed the Bahamian. Suffering a high ankle sprain in the Warhawks exhibition game, Forbes struggled through the team’s first 10 games and averaged 2.3 points per contest off 17.6 percent shooting. A healthy Forbes has caught fire over the last nine games. In coming off the bench in all nine games since the start, Forbes has averaged a team-high 14 points per contest off 44.2 percent shooting from the field and 40.8 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Hooper’s Season Ends with Injury ULM shooting guard Tony Hooper saw his senior campaign cut short after X-rays confirmed that he has a fifth metatarsal fracture in his left foot After serving an eight-game suspension, Hooper returned to the team hampered by a deep thigh bruise. Limited to four minutes against Tennessee Tech, the Houston, Texas, native sat out the next two games before breaking his foot in a noncontact drill during practice. A Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team selection, Hooper appeared in four games for the Warhawks in 2008-09, picking up three starts and averaging eight points per contest. He currently ranks 15th all-time at ULM in career points, third in made career 3-pointers, sixth in career steals, and 10th in career assists. ULM Legend Gets NBA Head Coaching Shot The National Basketball Association’s Sacramento Kings elevated current assistant coach and former ULM letterwinner Kenny Natt to the position of interim head coach Monday morning after the organization dismissed Reggie Theus. Natt, a Bastrop, La., native and four-year letterwinner at ULM from 1977 to 1980, had been an assistant coach in the NBA for 14 years. His NBA coaching resume includes nine years as an assistant coach to Jerry Sloan where he helped the Utah Jazz to a pair of NBA Finals and three seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers where he helped the team to a 2007 NBA Finals appearance. Natt was in his second season as an assistant with the Kings before being elevated to interim head coach. The 30th selection in the 1980 NBA draft, Natt started his professional career by playing one season with the Indiana Pacers. He also played one year with each the Utah Jazz and the Kansas City Kings before closing out his playing career in the CBA and World Basketball League. Natt closed out his four-year career at ULM by garnering AllTransAmerica honors (now the Atlantic Sun Conference) after averaging better than 20 points as a senior. The younger brother of the program’s all-time leading scorer Calvin Natt, Kenny Natt finished his collegiate career with 1,003 points – the 18th most in program history at the time of his graduation. In his coaching debut, Natt’s Kings defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, 118-103. A New Top Four The Warhawks knew coming into the 2008-09 campaign that they were going to have a lot of points to replace. The team’s leading scorer from a season ago - Tony Hooper at just over 15 points per game - missed an eight-game stretch before returning for four minutes against Tennessee Tech last time out. That fact, coupled with the graduation of the team’s next three leading scorers has left ULM looking to replace a load of points. Graduation, injuries, and absences have caused the Warhwks to play without 52.4 of the team’s 68 points per game from last season during the eightgame stretch - a total of 77 percent of the team’s point production. Newcomers Lawrence Gilbert (13.5 ppg), Malcolm Thomas (12.7), and Jarvis Hill (9.1), and returner Rudy Turner (11.2) have stepped up to take on the load from last season’s departed scorers. For Roberts, this recent injury marks the final chapter of a career with the men’s basketball team that has been hampered by an unfortunate string of bad luck. The Van, Texas, native has battled back from a broken foot, broken thumb and two ACL tears in his right knee. Over the past two seasons Roberts has been under the supervision of Dr. Tarek O. Souryal, team orthopedic surgeon of the Dallas Mavericks. He ends his playing days at ULM with 197 points and 108 assists in a 33-game career that stretched four seasons. Roberts played a big part in the Warhawks’ run towards a West Division Championship in the 200607 campaign, the team’s first season in the Sun Belt Conference. In 15 games that season, he averaged 9.7 points and 4.7 assists per contest. Reinforcement Arrives ULM got a big boost to its offense when sophomore forward Lawrence Gilbert was cleared to play prior to the game against Louisiana Tech. A transfer from Miami (Fla.), Gilbert exploded for 14 points off the bench in his first appearance with the Warhawks off 4-of-8 shooting. Through 13 games this season - including 11 starts - Gilbert is averaging a team-high 13.5 points per game and has accounted for two of the team’s eight double-doubles on the season after scoring 18 points and adding 10 boards off the bench at McNeese State and 17 points and 11 boards against Troy. A Rivals.com four-star recruit and 24th-ranked small forward as a senior in high school, Gilbert picked up starts in the Atlantic Coast Conference against Nebraska and North Carolina. Austin as time expired in the Warhawks win. Against UALR, ULM fought its way back from a 10-point halftime deficit and held the ball with four seconds remaining in regulation. Warhawks Picked Fifth In League’s West Division by Sun Belt Coaches No team has proved more that the league’s preseason polls don’t matter than the ULM Warhawks. Mascot Mania - ULM Edition One of only two schools in the country that utilize the Warhawk (Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater is the other), ULM’s mascot is unique to north Louisiana. Encompassing a dual-connection to the local hawks that fly around the area bayous and the P-40 ‘Warhawk’ airplanes flown by northeast Louisiana’s General Claire Chennault and the Flying Tigers during World War II, the Warhawk provides a unique flair for ULM and the community. Mascot Mania - Opponent Edition Amongst all the four-year institutions in the country, Bulldogs is one of the most common mascots, trailing only Eagles (used 74 times) and Tigers (used 46 times). There are 39 schools that use Bulldogs as their nickname with three of them on the 2008-09 ULM schedule. The Warhawks second game of the season, a November 17 date at Mississippi State, was the first instance of ULM facing a ‘Bulldog’ in the campaign, but wasn’t the last time the Warhawks faced a canine. In addition to MSU, ULM faced the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs and the Union College Bulldogs. Also on the Warhawks schedule were three games against Eagles, including the season opener against Morehead State and a pair of games against the Golden Eagles of Tennessee Tech. ULM’s schedule also featured games against two of the six four-year schools that utilize the Trojan as their mascot - Sun Belt Conference-foes Troy and UALR. Congressman Early Begins First Term In the spirt of election season, ULM head coach Orlando Early solidified his position as one of the top coaches in the Sun Belt Conference with his appointment to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I congress as the representative of the 13-team league. Serving as the liaison between the NABC and the Sun Belt Conference coaches, Early’s responsibilities are to champion the sport of collegiate basketball and advocate for its best interests in current and future endeavors. Starting at Home In stark contrast to his first three seasons in Monroe, ULM head coach Orlando Early’s squad opened the 2008-09 season on friendly ground. The Warhawks opened the regular season at home for the first time in Early’s four-year tenure when they hosted Morehead State on November 14. The 2008 season opener also marked the second time that the Warhawks opened against an unranked team - the first since playing Eastern Illinois to open the 2006-07 campaign. In each of the previous two seasons, ULM played five straight games away from Fant-Ewing Coliseum before appearing in front of the home crowd. This season, three of the Warhawks first four games were at home. Step-Back Three The major rule change in men’s collegiate basketball this past season may have a direct impact on the offense of the Warhawks. One of the Sun Belt Conference’s leading 3-point shooting teams since joining the league for the 2006-07 season, ULM will have to take a step back to attempt the long ball. Over the summer, the 3-point line was moved back - from 19 feet nine inches to 20-9. On the 20-year anniversary of the institution of the 3-point line, the stripe has made its first move backwards in the collegiate game. Coming in at No. 96, ULM’s storied history on the hard court once again garnered national attention. Including a period of time that spans since the 1984 campaign, ULM ranks in a tie with the Southeastern Conference’s Vanderbilt on the list. Counting the current Sun Belt Conference member institutions, ULM ranks fourth behind only Western Kentucky (43), South Alabama (T-82), and New Orleans (88). The Warhawks would also be the highest ranking program of its former league, the Southland Conference, besting Texas-San Antonio by 61 spots. A Load of Points to Replace The start of the 2008-09 season brings a big question for the ULM men’s basketball team - how to replace the scoring of departed starters Lance Brasher, Jonas Brown and Jordan Payne. A trio of transfers, the combo provided the Warhawks with 2,367 points during their careers. Payne scored 821 points in two years at ULM while Brown came just short of the mark at 798 during his Warhawk career. A three-year letter winner for the Warhawks, Brasher chipped in 748 career points. Entering the season, senior guard Tony Hooper represented the lone holdover on the team with a significant career point total - 1,243. The next most career points at the Division I level by a Warhawk were 327 - scored by senior forward Afam Nweke in 79 total games entering the campaign. Home Grown Talent Some of ULM’s greatest basketball stars have come from Monroe and neighboring parishes. The 2008-09 roster has a distinctly local flare as four players hometowns are within 100 miles of FantEwing Coliseum. Sophomores Mitchell Hampton (Ouachita HS) and Raschard Boatner (Richwood HS) call the city of Monroe home, while sophomore Rudy Turner (Peabody HS) is from nearby Alexandria and freshman A.J. Toms (Weston HS) is from Jonesboro. Hitting the ‘Big Easy’ Of the 12 Division I basketball playing schools in the state of Louisiana, none have hit the New Orleans area harder for men’s basketball student-athletes then ULM and UNO. Of the Warhawks 15-man roster, three (senior David Garrison, junior Kenneth Averette, and sophomore Lawrence Gilbert) call the Big Easy home. The Privateers, located in New Orleans, have kept four local stars on their roster. There are 12 total New Orleans-natives listed on Division I basketball rosters in the state of Louisiana with the majority - 10 - playing in the Sun Belt Conference (three at ULM, four at New Orleans, and three at Louisiana-Lafayette). Southern University, located in Baton Rouge, is the lone other men’s basketball squad with student-athletes from New Orleans. ULM also has one coach - assistant Harold Juluke - from the area, giving the Warhawks the Big Easy connection. Bulking Up After featuring an undersized roster for the majority of his head coaching career at ULM, Warhawk coach Orlando Early’s 2008-09 squad features an influx of size. With the development of sophomores Rudy Turner (6-8) and Mitchell Hampton (6-7), the addition of junior Malcolm Thomas (6-6), and the return of senior Afam Nweke (6-7), the Warhawks look to be a more intimidating presence in the paint. ULM will get added size in the paint as sophomore Lawrence Gilbert (6-7) is eligible to join the team after redshirting a season ago. A ‘Point’ of Emphasis With injuries to the point guard position plaguing the Warhawks over the first few years of Orlando Early’s tenure in Monroe, the ULM head coach is taking few chances for the upcoming season. Junior Brandon Roberts appeared in ULM’s exhibition game against William Carey, played 17 minutes, and contributed four points and two assists. He started ULM’s season opener against Morehead State and added four assists. During the offseason, Early and staff added transfer Reggie Lassiter and freshman Brandon Williams to a group that includes junior Kenneth Averette, a walk-on turned starter in 2007-08. Counting sophomore Raschard Boatner - redshirting this season following offseason surgery - the Warhawks had five players who’s primary position is point guard on the roster. Following a career-ending injury to Roberts following the Auburn game and Boatner’s continuing recovery, the Warhawks are down to three point guards on the active roster. Warhawks Lend a Helping Hand With the coast of Louisiana hit hard by Hurricane Gustav in August, members of the ULM men’s basketball team elected to lend a helping hand to those in need. Serving those displaced to Monroe by the storm, the Warhawks served food, folded cots, and lent an ear to those in need. This season’s wasn’t the first time that an Orlando Early-coached team has helped this way inside their community. In his first season at ULM, the state of Louisiana was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina and the Warhawks helped in a similar fashion for individuals displaced. ULM Men’s Basketball • FIU Notes It’s TV Time for the Warhawks The ULM men’s basketball team is included in the television package announced during the preseason by the Sun Belt Conference. The Warhawks game against Troy will serve as the league ‘Game of the Week’ on Saturday, January 17 inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The league will stay in Monroe for a pair as the women’s basketball team’s Sunday contest against the Trojans will also be featured as part of the Sun Belt package. Seeing Stripes ULM fans may notice a slight change when the team takes the court this season. The Warhawk men’s basketball team made the switch to Adidas apparel over the summer, joining the athletic department’s 15 other sports. ULM makes the change from the Nike swoosh to the three stripes of Adidas for the upcoming campaign. A New Face on the Sidelines While all of Orlando Early’s assistant coaches return for the 2008-09 season, the ULM staff suffered a big loss over the summer. Longtime Warhawk athletic trainer Robert Williamson retired after a career that spanned four coaches and three different conferences. Starting with the 1977-78 season, Williamson observed some of the greatest players in program history, sat on the sidelines for 12 conference or divisional championships, and witnessed 515 ULM wins. Stepping in for Williamson as the athletic trainer for the men’s basketball team is 1998 ULM graduate J.D. Dunavant. Familiar with winners, Dunavant worked with the ULM softball team in 1997 - the season it advanced to the NCAA Tournament - and has worked with nationally ranked football and track and field programs while with Arkansas. Warhawks Add Mingo During Early Signing Period The ULM men’s basketball team and head coach Orlando Early announced the signing of former West Monroe-star Hugh Mingo to a national letter of intent for the 2009-10 season on Thursday morning. Seeing the value and talent of basketball athletes in north Louisiana, ULM has made a commitment under Early to add area prep stars to the roster. Eight players on the current roster hail from Louisiana with three playing at least one year for a Monroe-area high school. Mingo originally committed with the Warhawks out of high school before opting to take the junior college route. He was part of a recruiting class that included current Warhawks and area prep stars Rudy Turner (Peabody HS-Alexandria, La.) and Mitchell Hampton (Ouachita HS-Monroe, La.). Mingo, an athletic 6-3 guard, will join the Warhawks after his sophomore season at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas. As a freshman with the Texans, Mingo averaged 6.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in helping lead his team to a 30-5 record and a national championship. Early in his sophomore campaign, Mingo is averaging 15.3 points and two steals per game while hitting on 62.5 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. At West Monroe High School, Mingo averaged 18 points, 13 rebounds and six assists per game for a 29-7 squad. Warhawks Add Carr During Early Signing Period The ULM men’s basketball team tapped into its New Orleans pipeline once again when prep star Colby Carr signed a National Letter of Intent during the early period to play with the Warhawks starting with the 2009-10 season. Carr, entering his senior season at O.P. Walker High School, will become the fifth New Orleans native to sign with ULM since Orlando Early was named head coach. He will join current Warhawks David Garrison, Nathaniel Roché, Kenneth Averette, and Lawrence Gilbert. A 6-3 wing, Carr averaged 15 points and seven rebounds per game as a junior in helping O.P. Walker to a 4A Louisiana state runner-up finish – falling in the state championship to Helen Cox and Georgetown signee Greg Monroe. Offense Struggles in Exhibition Loss Junior Jarvis Hill scored a team-high 21 points and came one board shy of a double-double for the Warhawks in a 71-69 loss to William Carey University in ULM’s lone exhibition game of the season. Senior Afam Nweke added a double-double off the bench with 14 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Brandon Williams added nine points and three boards. ULM struggled from the git-go on offense and finished the game with 23 turnovers and a 38.2 percent field goal clip. Enjoying a noticeable difference in the paint, the Warhawks had three times as many offensive rebounds as the Crusaders (15-5) and turned that into a 20-6 advantage in second chance points. The ULM coaches experimented with different line-ups and combinations on the floor in the loss with mixed levels of success. AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn harassed the ULM men’s basketball team on defense all game long, forcing 29 turnovers in a 78-55 victory at BeardEaves Memorial Coliseum in Auburn, Ala. on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles torched the nets from all parts on the floor and finished the game hitting on 51.4 percent of their shots from the field, 60 percent from beyond the arc, and 88 percent from the charity stripe. Frank Davis epitomized the hot shooting, connecting on 6-of-7 from three on his way to a game-high 22 points. Junior Malcolm Thomas tied his career high with 18 points to lead three Warhawks in double-figures, but a cold night from the field allowed the Tigers to put together a pair of strong runs. ULM combined to shoot 36.4 percent from the field, converting on 16 of its 44 shots. Tennessee Tech (4-1) used a slow start by the Warhawk offense to jump out to a double-digit lead at 12-2 with 15:50 left in the first half. The Golden Eagles built their advantage to 16 points at the 13:01 mark before a ULM run made it 21-14 with under nine in the opening period. In the second half it was more of the same for Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles blistered the nets to the tune of 62.2 percent shooting in the second stanza to run away from the Warhawks. Game Notables: • Tennessee Tech became the first team to top the 100-point plateau against ULM since Kansas accomplished the feat in Lawrence to open the 2007-08 campaign. • Seven Golden Eagles topped double-digits against the Warhawks, the most by an opposing team since Orlando Early was named head coach. The last time five players topped double figures against ULM was Troy on January 31, 2008. ULM (2-4) fought shot for shot with the Tigers through the first 11 minutes of the game. With the score tied at 19-19 with 9:03 remaining, Auburn put together a 14-2 run spanning a four-minute stretch to push the advantage to double figures. Auburn (4-4) would lead by as many as 16 in the first half before settling on a 40-26 advantage at the intermission. Thomas kept the Warhawks in the game in the opening period by tying his career high in points with 18 off 7-of-10 shooting. In the second half, junior Kenneth Averette sparked a Warhawk run that cut the deficit to 10 points at 58-48 with just under nine minutes remaining in the period. Auburn locked down on defense and pulled away for the final score. Game Notables: • ULM’s 10-point run in the second half was its longest consecutive points scored streak of the 2008-09 season. • Sophomore Rudy Turner established a new career high in points after scoring 14 on a career-high 11 attempts. Turner also pulled down a gamehigh nine rebounds. • Both junior Malcolm Thomas and junior Kenneth Averette picked up their first starts of the season and responded with double-digit point games. • Three players scored in double figures for the Warhawks for the first time in the 2008-09 campaign. Two other players scored nine points in the effort to help ULM score a season-high 70 points. • ULM’s starters combined to score 53 of the team’s 55 points, for a seasonhigh 96.4 percent of the team’s point production. Including sophomore Rudy Turner’s 14 minutes played, the Warhawk starters averaged 30.6 minutes played in the game with junior Jarvis Hill playing a career-high 37 minutes. • ULM failed to hit 30 percent shooting in the opening half for the third time in the 2008-09 season. • ULM fell to 0-2 against the Southeastern Conference’s West Division and 0-3 all-time against Auburn. • Junior Reggie Lassiter notched his first career start while freshman Brandon Williams picked up his second. • Freshman A.J. LAKE CHARLES, La. – McNeese State (4-3) capitalized on the slow start for ULM (2-6) to build a double-digit lead and held on for a 66-57 win over the Warhawks at the Lake Charles Civic Center on Saturday afternoon. It was the Cowboys second win in as many tries over the Warhawks after they picked up an 82-63 win in Monroe, La., on November 20. Magnum Rolle led all scorers with 19 points for the Bulldogs, while Kyle Gibson added 16 and Kenneth Cooper scored 13. Rolle added a game-high eight rebounds and Gibson pulled down seven boards. La Tech jumped out to a 15-4 lead over the first six minutes of the ball game by shooting a blistering 6-of-9 from the field. The Warhawks used a 9-2 run over the final four minutes of the half to close the deficit to 32-29 at the break. The Bulldogs (4-4) extended their lead out to nine, 40-31, in the opening minutes of the second half before the Warhawks (2-5) fought back once again and pulled within one point, 52-51, with just over six minutes remaining. ULM went cold from the floor over the remainder of the game connecting on just 2-of-12 to close out the contest. The Bulldogs ended the game in the exact opposite way hitting 5-of-8 down the stretch. Game Notables: • The game between former rivals seperated by 30 miles of I-20 was the first between the two programs since the 1990-91 campaign, a stretch of 17 years. • Sophomore Lawrence Gilbert made his much-anticipated ULM debut and scored a team-high 14 points off the bench. The Miami (Fla.) transfer was 4-of-8 from the field in 28 minutes of game time. • ULM fell to 0-12 all-time at the Thomas Assembly Center and 36-47 alltime against Louisiana Tech. • ULM was whistled for 10 more fouls (23-13) and attempted 15-fewer free throws (27-12) on the evening. • Junior Jarvis Hill failed to tally a point for the first time in his ULM career. Game Notables: • Playing in only his second game of the season, sophomore Lawrence Gilbert poured in ULM’s first double-double of the 2008-09 campaign. The New Orleans, La., native scored a career-high 18 points and added a career-high 10 rebounds off the bench. • Sophomore Rudy Turner controlled the paint and finished with a game-high - and career-high - 19 points off 8-of-12 shooting. MONROE, La. – Junior Malcolm Thomas got in the zone early to help the ULM men’s basketball team snap a five-game skid with a 72-66 win over New Orleans inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Friday night. Travis Bureau exemplified the hot-shooting Ragin’ Cajuns’ night after connecting on 8-of-9 shots from the field to finish with a team-high 18 points. Bureau helped set the pace for a balanced ULL attack that featured four players in double digits. Cold shooting plagued the Warhawks early in the opening period. After scoring on two of its first three shots, ULM would go 8-of-26 down the stretch in the opening half. The Ragin’ Cajuns took advantage of the slow ULM start and came out firing on all cylinders. ULL went 5-of-5 in the opening four minutes to stake an early 15-6 lead at the 15:35 mark. Out of the lockers, the Warhawks were able to slow the Ragin’ Cajun offense and crawled to within seven points at 56-49 with 10:07 remaining. The offense would once again desert ULM and Louisiana-Lafayette was able to use quick outlet passes on missed jumpers to extend its advantage in transition and pull away for the victory. After the Privateers scored the first basket of the game, sophomore Rudy Turner scored four points and Thomas drilled the first of five made three’s on the game to give the Warhawks a lead they would not relinquish. UNO tied the game at 9-9 with 15:13 remaining in the opening period before sophomore Lawrence Gilbert put the Warhawks up for good with a trey. ULM continued to extend its advantage and entered the intermission up by 11 points at 40-29. ULM’s 56.5 percent shooting clip in the opening period was a season-high for any half. Thomas entered the lockers with 12 points off 5-of-7 shooting and seven rebounds. The Privateers would make a game of it in the second half, twice pulling the score to within one point, but ULM seemed to always have an answer. After UNO made it a 52-51 game with 10:17 remaining, the Warhawks pushed their advantage back above five and were able to hold on down the stretch. Game Notables: • Sophomore Rudy Turner tied a career-high with 12 rebounds while tallying his first double-double of the campaign (18 points/12 boards). He also added three blocks to his team lead. Game Notables: • ULM snapped a season-long five game skid and evened its conference record at 1-1. Despite New Orleans twice closing the gap to one point, the Warhawks led the entire second half and converted on their free throws down the stretch to preserve the win. • Sophomore Lawrence Gilbert topped double digits for the third consecutive game to start his ULM career. • Junior Malcolm Thomas scored a career-high 25 points - including 15 via the 3-point shot - and tied his career-high with eight rebounds. • Forwards Gilbert and Turner combined to go 10-of-25 from the field (40 percent). Finally the Buffaloes were able to break through at the 15:07 mark when Tomlinson hit a three to give them a 57-56 lead. Wednesday evening. MONROE, La. – Five scored in double figures and two players had double-doubles as the ULM men’s basketball team defeated Union College, 97-43, Saturday afternoon at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. ULM shot 63.8 percent from the floor in the game including an 11-for-20 effort from 3-point range. Forbes made 4-of-5 attempts from downtown. In the extra frame, UALR out scored the Warhawks, 16-8, to fend off the methodical comeback and claim the victory. MONROE, La. --- The ULM men’s basketball team went shot-for-shot with the Sun Belt Conference’s top offensive squad, but in the end came up one point short in a 71-70 loss inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. Despite an even rebounding mark, Arkansas State was able to control the paint, outscoring the Warhawks 38-10 and limiting ULM’s starting frontcourt to a combined 5-for-25 performance. Eric McKinney finished with 17 points and 15 rebounds while Shawn Morgan came off the bench for 19 points and nine boards. Trailing by one point with under a minute remaining, Brandon Hazzard hit a deep shot to finish with a team-high 13 points for Troy. The shot gave the Trojans a 69-67 advantage in the game’s waning seconds Junior Malcolm Thomas finished with game-high honors in points, scoring 20 points for ULM off 8-of-12 shooting. Junior Dynile Forbes added 13 points off the bench and sophomore Lawrence Gilbert scored 10. Sophomore Rudy Turner finished with a team-high 14 rebounds. In a back-and-forth opening period neither team could gain much of an advantage on the scoreboard. ULM slowly pulled away and built a six-point advantage at 23-17 with 6:53 remaining in the first half. Arkansas State would respond with a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to build a threepoint advantage, its largest of the opening period, with under a minute remaining. The opening period featured seven ties and six lead changes. A pair of free throws by sophomore Lawrence Gilbert with 36 seconds remaining in the opening period knotted the score at 26-26, a ledger the two teams would take into the intermission. ULM came out swinging in the second half and, on a barrage of treys took a six-point lead at 43-37 with 13:21 remaining. The Red Wolves would answer and rattled off a 10-3 run to retake the advantage. After Thomas knotted the score one last time on a jumper with 7:50 remaining, Arkansas State went back into the paint to take the final lead. The Warhawks would draw to within one possession several times down the stretch, but couldn’t finish the comeback Game Notables: • Sophomore Rudy Turner pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds, including a careerhigh eight on the offensive end. • ULM fell to 0-10 on the road in the 2008-09 campaign, its longest road losing streak to start a season since starting 0-10 in the 1959-60 season. Originally ruled a two, Hazzard’s shot with 31 seconds on the clock was reversed to a trey a timeout and two possessions later – a move that would provide the Trojans the extra insurance they would need in a game that went to the wire. ULM turned the ball over with less than 20 seconds remaining and Michael Vogler was fouled and sent to the free throw line. The Hazzard shot was changed and Vogler hit both free throw attempts to push the Troy lead to four points with under 16 seconds remaining. The Warhawks opened the game cold from the field, going 0-for-8 in the first four minutes and allowing the Trojans to build a 9-0 lead. ULM would respond and, over the next nine minutes and hit 10-of-13 shots to stake a 27-23 lead with 6:59 remaining in the opening period. Thomas scored all 10 of his first half points during the stretch. ULM looked like it would start to pull away on several occasions, but each time would see Troy hit a trey to stop the run. The Trojans converted on six 3-point attempts in the opening period to enter the lockers trailing by four points at 40-36. The second half featured eight ties and five lead changes with neither team capable of staking an advantage of more than five points. Troy took the lead for the final change on Hazzard’s shot. Game Notables: • Junior Malcolm Thomas scored a game-high 20 points in his second consecutive game, giving him four games against league opponents in which he has scored 20 or more points. • Sophomore Lawrence Gilbert registered his second career double-double after scoring 17 points and adding a career-high 11 rebounds. • ULM fell at home against Troy for the first time in series history (2-1). • Junior Jarvis Hill played lockdown defense on Donald Boone, limiting the league’s second leading scorer to 14 points below his season average. 8/0‡6%& 7RWDO 3WU 5HERXQGV )*)*$ )*)*$ )7)7$ 2II 'HI 7RW 3) 3OD\HU 7XUQHU5XG\ *LOEHUW/DZUHQFH $YHUHWWH.HQQHWK 7KRPDV0DOFROP +LOO-DUYLV )RUEHV'\QLOH :LOOLDPV%UDQGRQ 1ZHNH$IDP +DPSWRQ0LWFKHOO 7HDP 7RWDOV )*VW+DOI )*VW+DOI )7VW+DOI I I J J J QGKDOI QGKDOI QGKDOI 73 $ 72 %ON 6WO 0LQ *DPH *DPH *DPH 'HDGEDOO 5HERXQGV $UNDQVDV6WDWH‡6%& 3OD\HU &KLD.XU<LPD %URZQ-H-XDQ 0F.LQQH\(ULF .RJJX,IHDQ\L %RRQH'RQDOG %U\DQW'DQLHO 7KRPDV-HUHP\ 0RUJDQ6KDZQ /DQFH0LNH .HDWRQ3- 7HDP 7RWDOV )*VW+DOI )*VW+DOI )7VW+DOI 7RWDO 3WU 5HERXQGV )*)*$ )*)*$ )7)7$ 2II 'HI 7RW 3) I I I J J QGKDOI QGKDOI QGKDOI *DPH *DPH *DPH 73 $ 72 %ON 6WO 0LQ 'HDGEDOO 5HERXQGV 2IILFLDOV(GGLH-DFNVRQ.\OH&KDPEHUV.HYLQ0DWKLV 7HFKQLFDOIRXOV8/01RQH$UNDQVDV6WDWH1RQH $WWHQGDQFH 6FRUHE\SHULRGV 8/0 $UNDQVDV6WDWH VW QG 7RWDO ULM Men’s Basketball • FIU Notes Game 19: ULM 94, at Florida Atlantic 88 Thursday, Jan. 22 • FAU Arena • 764 BOCA RATON, Fla. – In a game that resembled a Wild West shootout at times, the ULM men’s basketball team weathered the storm and snapped a 14-game road losing streak by downing Florida Atlantic 94-88 in Boca Raton, Fla., on Thursday night. ULM built a 17-point second half lead and held on for the six-point victory. Florida Atlantic capitalized on timely scoring and missed free throws in the final 10 minutes to draw the score to within a one possession game. Junior Dynile Forbes iced the game at the line, converting on 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory. Forbes finished with 19 points and was one of five Warhawks in double figures. Sophomore Rudy Turner led the team with 23 points and 11 rebounds. For the Owls, Paul Graham III scored a game-high 29 points to pace four in double figures. Shavar Richardson added 20 points while Alex Tucker added 12 points and 11 assists. FAU led by as many as seven points in the first half before Turner took control and pulled the Warhawks to within a possession. ULM briefly took the lead in the opening period at 30-29 with under four minutes remaining, but a pair of free throws by Nwoji gave the Owls the lead back. All hell would break loose as after a tipped ball out of bounds, the FAU bench was whistled for a series of four technical fouls that gave ULM eight free throws and the ball. Senior Afam Nweke would go 7-for-8 from the line and Thomas drilled a trey to key a 10-0 ULM run that lasted 18 seconds. The Warhawks would use the spurt to take a 42-34 halftime lead. The Warhawks came out punching in the second half and extended their advantage to 17 points with 13:05 remaining before the Owls were able to catch fire. Florida Atlantic would catch fire and hit on 16 of its next 20 shots to pull to within five points at 83-78 with 1:21 remaining. Game Notables: • The Warhawks would not attempt another field goal down the stretch, but converted on 11-of-12 free throws in the final minute to claim the victory and snap the road skid. • Senior Afam Nweke finished with a career-high 16 points and added seven rebounds. He was 8-for-10 from the charity stripe. • Sophomore Rudy Turner scored a career-high 23 points and added 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the campaign. • ULM snapped a 14-game road skid and avoided starting the season 0-11 on the road for the first time since the program’s first season on the court. • Five players scored in double figures for the Warhawks for the third time in the 200809 season. An enthusiastic leader and proven winner, Early instantly became the face of one of the region’s most historic programs, leading the Warhawks into the Sun Belt Conference and establishing him as one of the rising stars of the collegiate basketball coaching fraternity. Now entering his fourth season at the helm, Early has proven himself in short time as the best man to return the program to the successes it experienced during its gloried past. Under Early’s guidance, the Warhawks have returned to their dominant ways inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum posting a 28-12 home record in his first three seasons. During one stretch, including the entire 2006-07 season, ULM rattled off 15-consecutive home victories – a streak that reached as high as sixth nationally before it ended on a buzzer beating shot. Early - The Head Coach With only three seasons under his belt at ULM, it hasn’t taken long for Early to experience the highs and lows that come with being the head coach of collegiate basketball program. He was hired with the daunting task of succeeding the program’s only 400-game winner and the Southland Conference’s all-time winningest coach in Mike Vining. The off-court challenges came before Early’s first ULM squad ever took to the floor. On August 23, 2005 – just over four months after the coach’s appointment – the southern half of the Warhawks home state was ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. The squad featured two players and an assistant coach directly affected by the disaster. Already an uphill battle with a program that failed to tally double-digit wins for the first time in 46 seasons, Early guided the team to a 10-18 overall record. One year later the Warhawks joined the Sun Belt Conference and, under Early’s guidance, made their presence known immediately. Picked in the 2006-07 preseason league polls to finish last, the Earlyled Warhawks raced out to a 4-0 league start and ended the season with an 11-7 conference mark. With an 18-14 overall record marking the program’s first winning campaign since the 2001-02 season, ULM won a share of the West Division title. The team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament before being knocked out – in overtime – by eventual champion North Texas. ULM’s postseason win and winning league record were also the first for the program since the 2001-02 campaign. Having taken the league by storm during his sophomore campaign, Early garnered Coach of the Year honors from four different outlets, including the Sun Belt Conference, Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches, Louisiana Sports Writers Association, and National Association of Basketball Coaches. Early also ended the 2006-07 season as a finalist for the Hugh Durham Mid-Major Coach of the Year award. With high expectations for the 2007-08 season, ULM opened at eventual national champion Kansas and became the only program on the season to convert on better than 50 percent of their field goals in the loss to the Jayhawks. ULM challenged nationally ranked Michigan State in the CBE Classic before breaking out with a win over the Big 10’s Iowa in the opening round of the Hawkeye Challenge. From hunter to hunted, ULM entered the conference slate with a .500 record and ready to defend its divisional title from the previous season. A buzzer-beating shot in the league opener, coupled with some unlucky bounces along the way culminated in a 10-21 season that ended with a first-round loss at Middle Tennessee in the Sun Belt Conference tournament. Through his first three seasons as a head coach, Early has led the Warhawks to a 38-53 overall record. Early - The Assistant Beginning his collegiate coaching career as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Gardner-Webb, in the 1993-94 season, Early began a meteoric rise over the next ten years. His work in a supporting role became nationally recognized and culminated in an appearance in Athlon magazine’s Fall 2004 basketball issue as the third best assistant coach in the nation. With Early on the sideline, teams have posted a winning record nine times – including five seasons with 20 or more wins – and advanced to the NCAA Tournament on seven occasions. After two seasons with his alma mater, Early joined the staff at Western Carolina for the 1995-96 season. In his first year as an assistant with the Catamounts, Early helped the team to the Southern Conference championship and his first NCAA Tournament appearance. One year later, he was promoted to associate head coach – a position he served in for two seasons. Prior to the 1998-99 season, Early continued his coaching assent by joining Bobby Lutz’s staff as an assistant at UNC-Charlotte. In three seasons with the 49ers, Early helped the team to a pair of Conference USA titles, two NCAA Tournament appearances, an NIT appearance and 62-38 overall record. Three years later Alabama’s Mark Gottfried came calling for Early and added him to his staff as an assistant coach prior to the 2001-02 season. On December 23 of his first season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama reached a No. 1 national ranking on their way to an SEC regular season championship and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance. In four seasons with the Crimson Tide, Early helped the team to four-consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Alabama topped 20 wins three times with the ULM head coach on the sidelines and posted a combined 88-41 record. Early – The Player Before starting his collegiate coaching career Early served as the floor general of the Gardner-Webb Running Bulldogs in Boiling Springs, N.C. As the team’s point guard, he helped the team to the 1988 NAIA District 26 title. A four-year letterwinner as a point guard, he graduated with a degree in accounting in 1990. Early – The Person An avid teacher of the game, Early spends his summers teaching the game of basketball to youth in the Monroe, La. area. In the summer of 2008, Early returned to his hometown of Lebanon, Va. to conduct his first youth basketball camp in the area. More than just a basketball teacher, Early has instilled in his players a responsibility to the community they live in. Following Hurricane Katrina Early and his first team of Warhawks volunteered during the relief efforts - lending an ear, serving food, and organizing supplies for those displaced by the disaster. This past summer, the Warhawks were at it again, helping ease the pain of those families that were displaced to Monroe, La. due to Hurricane’s Gustav and Ike. Early is married to the former Jualeah Johnson. The couple has three children, Nakita, Storm and Erica. A native of Lebanon, Va., he was born on November 27, 1967.
