Community-Engaged Service Learning: A Continuum of Options for Connecting Competencies to the
Classroom
Open to: All Faculty and Staff and Student Development and Student Involvement Personnel
Content: Service learning is not new to Harper. Community-engaged Service Learning can take many
forms such as volunteer work, research for local organizations, community partner participation in the
classroom, teaching opportunities, policy-related work, community organizing activities, as well as other
forms of service activities. We have an opportunity to increase the competencies, career readiness and
marketability of our students by connecting them with our local and global community while they are
completing their educational goals at Harper. Students who have experience with community-based
organizations, professional networks, and volunteerism are more likely to be successfully with
employment and university transfers.
This session provides an overview of the pedagogy of community-engaged service learning, so that
colleagues in faculty and student involvement roles can consider options for integrating service learning
into our curriculum and activities. Harper has recently formed a Service Learning Advisory to explore
best practices and increase faculty resources to make Service Learning more accessible to faculty across
disciplines and divisions. Join Colleagues, who have used Service Learning in their curriculum and
student activities, for resource-sharing and discussion.

Help! How Do I Teach Non-Native English Speaking Students in My Classroom?
Open to: All Faculty and Staff
Content: In light of recent immigration issues happening in the world, it is easy to form assumptions
that may merely be myths about non-native speakers of English. This can be confusing when trying to
best facilitate a class discussion or grading an assignment. This session will de-mystify certain
assumptions and educate attendees on who these students really are. The session will also give very
practical suggestions on how to best foster learning with this unique population. You will learn not only
from ESL instructors, but also from a panel of students whose first language is not English.
Facilitators: Joyce Wisniewski, Leah Kang & Kathleen Reynolds

Introduction to LaTeX
Open to: All full time and adjunct Faculty
Content: This session provides an introduction to the LaTeX document processing language. LaTeX is a
tool for creating readable—sometimes beautiful—documents that use special characters and, especially,
mathematics. It is also often used to provide shortcuts to including math in online applications. (For
example, Blackboard provides an option to use LaTeX for math.) If you find yourself sometimes
frustrated with Word’s equation editor or special characters, this is for you! This session is targeted at a
STEM audience, and will consist of a brief introduction to the tool, followed by a lab period for guided
practice. Feel free to bring a document you’d like to create. Instructions for setting up appropriate
software on your own computer will be included, or bring along your Windows laptop or tablet and get
set up during the session.
Facilitators: America Masaros
Preventing and Responding to Sexual Harassment-Our responsibilities and resources
Open to: All Faculty and staff
Content: Did you know that one faculty member can be the reason a student reports a sexual assault?
Would you know what to do if you think sexual harassment is occurring in your class? Do you know your
obligations if a student reports that they are experiencing sexual harassment? As colleges around the
country continue to face lawsuits and come under scrutiny by the Office for Civil Rights for not
complying with Title IX, Harper College is putting a variety of measures in place to improve the safety of
our campus community. One important aspect of that is education for all faculty and staff about their
responsibilities to report and respond to sexual harassment. In this session, you’ll learn about the
College’s policies and what your obligations are, as well as ideas for how to incorporate this into your
classroom and curriculum. Case studies will provide insight into how faculty should respond when
students disclose sexual harassment or sexual assault. Staff and administration can also benefit from
this session as it provides an overview of the College policy and the reporting obligations of all
employees.
Facilitator: Laura Bennett & Beverly Riley, Title IX Co-Coordinators
Shared Governance Chair Training
Open to: All Faculty and staff wishing to serve as shared governance chair or wanting to learn more
about shared governance at Harper College.
Content: Anyone who is currently serving as a shared governance chair and has not already completed
the required training must attend this seminar. This training is also an excellent professional
development activity, so, even if you don’t serve as a current chair or don’t plan to in the immediate
future, you will learn about shared governance at Harper College.
Facilitator: Maria Coons, Sr. Executive to the President
Revised 1/5/2016 5:22 PM
Shared Governance Member Training
Open to: All Faculty and staff wishing to serve on a governance chair committee
Content: Anyone wishing to serve on a shared governance committee and has not already completed
the required training, must do so during Spring 2016 Orientation Week. Even if you have participated in
shared governance in the past, you are required to complete this training. Taking the training does not
ensure that you will be placed on a committee, but it qualifies you to serve. This training class is also an
excellent professional development activity and provides you with the opportunity to learn how shared
governance works at Harper College.
Facilitator: Maria Coons, Sr. Executive to the President
Students on the Autism Spectrum – breaking down communication barriers.

There’s an Interpreter Here – Now What??

of Hearing students, faculty, staff, and administrators. One example of such access is through the use of
American Sign Language Interpreters. This workshop will answer all the questions you’ve ever had
about working with an interpreter.
Facilitator: Susan Teplinsky, Sara Lucas, other staff interpreters from Access and Disabilities
Tweeting Our Way to Accreditation
Open to: All Faculty and Staff
Content: Fulfilling the college’s mission requires resources; money, buildings, and technology. This
discussion will focus on how we use these resources to support our reason for being; that is to provide
high quality and affordable education to our students. What will you get from the session? An
opportunity to contribute to the reaccreditation of the College! And, if that is not enough, you will gain
new insight into the wondrous ways in which accreditation works. And if that’s not enough, come for
the cookies and door prizes! This is part of the HLC steering committees Campus Conversation series on
the reaccreditation process.
Facilitators: Michael Babb and Kelly Page
