n Economic factors: Because health care
costs have risen steeply in recent years,
you may be considering the elimination
of one or more benefits, such as disability
insurance or vision care. Before you take
away a benefit, however, take into account
how employees will perceive a major
modification to their coverage. It may be
better to ask your employees to pay more
in deductibles and co-pays than ask
them to give up benefits they really like.
n Increased turnover: An increase in your
turnover may signal that your benefits
program is no longer competitive.
n Change in demographics: Check
frequently to make sure your benefits are
adequately serving your employee
demographics. A qualitative approach to
looking at your company’s workforce by
age, gender, marital status and other
characteristics may suggest you’re not
meeting the needs of each category. For
example, younger people want time off
and money while older people want
401(k)s and good medical coverage.
n Rapid growth or downsizing: A five or
ten percent staffing change, up or down,
should trigger a renegotiation of some types
of benefits, since vendors offer different
pricing at various workforce levels.
n Staff Comments: Listen to staff. If a
significant number of employees are
asking for benefits you don’t have, it’s
a sign you may be out of step with
your competitors.
