OL Application Agreement [Required]
Orientation Leader Details
If you are looking for a great summer experience where you work alongside other incredible student leaders to help new students and their families get acclimated to TCU,
then being an OL is for you! OLs have the responsibility of serving as peer advisors and resources to new students and families participating in TCU's Orientation Program.
In addition, OLs serve as small group leaders and assist new students with academic registration. It is important that OLs are excited about TCU and want to aid students
and families in their transition into the TCU community.
Leadership Requirements
OLs hold their position from January through September, plus one week in January of the following year. The time is divided between training and the Orientation dates.
Training
All training dates are mandatory. If you are unable to attend all training sessions, you may not hold a leadership position with Orientation.
All-FYE Staff Meeting Wednesday, February 24, 2016 10:00 p.m.
Spring Training- All selected OLs will participate in a weekly training meeting for 2 hours throughout the Spring semester held on Wednesdays from 5-7.
In-Depth Training May 16 -June 1, All Day
Orientation Dates
June 2 - 30, 2016
August 8 - 21, 2016
January 12-13, 2017
Housing and Stipend
OLs will be housed on campus from May 15 - July 1 and will be paid a $1800 stipend for their leadership position during the summer.
Time Off
You will be on duty during the dates listed above. Time off is extremely limited and on a permission basis only.
Outside Employment
No employment is allowed from May 16- July 1 and August 8/21, 2016.
Summer School
An OL position will allow you to take summer classes during the July session only.
Responsibilities
Assistance to Students
-Welcome new students and their families and assist them in the initial Orientation registration and check-in.
-Get to know all the students in your small group, as well as any other new student you might meet during the program.
-Learn the University resources and share that knowledge with students and families.
-Be available for general assistance to students, including the evening/night hours.
-Serve as an academic and social role model.
-OLs will participate in all First Year Experience events including, but not limited to, the Chancellor's Assembly, Common Reading, Residence Hall move-in, and other
mandatory/expected events for new students.
Educational Duties
-Impart information about academic resources, student activities, and university services to students and families.
-Aid students in understanding academic language and requirements, and assist them with the development of a class schedule options.
-Insure that residents are familiar with and comply with University and residence hall policies, procedures, and consequences.
-Educate students about how to get involved in University life.
-Assist with the academic enrollment process.
Creating a Successful OL Experience
-Remain flexible at all times.
-Communicate honestly and often with Orientation Leadership and Student Development Services Staff.
-Attend all staff training sessions and meetings - and be on time.
-Support other OLs at all times.
-Have a great attitude.
-Report promptly any needed maintenance and repair work.
-Respond appropriately to criticisms and program evaluations.
-Complete staff reports and assignments as directed.
The Selection Process
Step 1: Complete the application and submit your resume. The application asks for your four-letter score from the MBTI Assessment on the Humanmetrics website. If you
have not taken the test, please go to http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/jtypes2.asp and take the test. You will also be asked to share your top 5 Strengths (according
to StrengthsQuest). If you have do not remember your Strengths or have not taken the online inventory, please contact Tracy Harris at t.l.harris@tcu.edu.
Applications will not be accepted after 5pm on Friday, October 16, 2016.
Step 2: Sign up for your individual interview in SDS (BLUU Suite 2003) after you submit your application. Individual interviews will give you the opportunity to sit down with
two members of the Orientation Team in an interview setting.
You should sign up for a 30 minutes time slot by the application closing deadline of October 16. All individual interviews will take place the week of October 19-23.
Step 3:
The final step of the interview process is the group interview and presentation which you will sign up at the conclusion of your individual interview. You have two time slots
to chose from. The group interview will include a brief individual presentation and group activities.
Interviews will be held Wednesday, October 28 from 5:30-7 pm and 7-8:30 pm in the BLUU Zeidman room.
An important note about the presentation at group interviews:
A crucial qualification for all OLs is the ability to communicate clearly with new students and their families. You will make your presentation to other students who are
applying to be OLs and to the Orientation Leadership Team. Please pick a topic from the ones listed below and make sure your presentation is no longer than three
minutes. You may use visual aids or props if you desire. If you chose to use any electronic presentation techniques, please be sure to bring your presentation on a USB with
you. A laptop will be provided for you. However, presentations do not have to use electronic resources; it is very important that you be CREATIVE in your presentation
techniques.
