Fall is here… my favorite time of the year!
We have had a wonderful start to the 20112012 school year.Wheaton North High School
is a great place to send your teenagers. This
year we are continuing our focus on College
and Career Readiness Skills as measured by
the ACT. The District 200 Keys to Success:
Key 1 – Demonstrate Academic Proficiency
and Key 2 – Think Critically and Problem
Solve are emphasized daily in our
classrooms. They are the basis for all of our
teaching and learning activities.
Wheaton North High School has much to
celebrate as well. Our 10-year ACT trend
data shows significant growth:

Wheaton North students attained an
average score across all sections of the test
of 24.4, better than 96% of all students in
Illinois. This is a testimony of the exceptional
things that are happening in our classrooms!
Wheaton North’s 2011 juniors also scored
better than 93% of all schools in Illinois on
the Prairie State Achievement Exam.
We are proud to announce our National
Merit Commended and Semifinalists
students. The National Merit Scholarship
Program begins with over 1,400,000
participants nationwide. Based on their
PSAT performance, 50,000 students
qualify as High Score Designees. From that,
34,000 are selected as National Merit
Commended students. This year we have 18
students: David Baird, Casey Blair, Emily
Bonga, Derek Breese, Mikaela Breese, Susan
Bywaters, Clarie Carden, Luke Elliott,
Hannah Halleckson, Jamie Jacobson, Cole
Manschot, Ryan Mathis, Gareth Phillips,
David Rudman, Daniel Sales, Cody Schulz,
Mariel Tader, and Colton Ursiny.
The National Merit Semi-finalists are also
selected based on the PSAT score. 16,000
seniors are selected as Semi-finalists, which
is the top 1% of all seniors across the
nation. This year we have 6 students: Adam
Billingham, Addison Euhus, Amy Hummel,
Megan Liebman, Zach Neal, and Gabrielle
Wojtyna. Congratulations to the above
students, their parents, and the entire District
200 community.
Upcoming events include Parent/Teacher
Conferences held on October 12-13, 2011.
In order to schedule an appointment, you
must access the Parent/Teacher Conference
link at www.wnhs.org and follow the
steps by October 11th. Please call Assistant

you have scheduling questions. As you review
this newsletter, please take note of all the
upcoming events that are open to the public:
the fall play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,”
music concerts, sporting events, etc. This is
your school as well, and we enjoy seeing our
parents. The Falcon Focus continues to be
our link to the community, and this edition
is filled with information. As I said in the
beginning, this is a great place to be!
Sincerely,
Jill Bullo, Principal

As I write this note, we are beginning our first semester of school, and things are well
underway. Homecoming and all the associated activities are behind us. I hope that the
opening of school has gone well for your children and you.We are now in the process
of setting up for Parent/Teacher Conferences which are scheduled for October 12th
and 13th. We will again be using “pickAtime” to support our conference scheduling
process. PickAtime specializes in Parent/Teacher Conference scheduling and is
used by schools throughout the United States and Canada. If you would like more
information on the company you can find them at www.pickatime.com.
You will receive specific directions as we get closer to the dates through a recorded
message and email blast from Ms. Jill Bullo. After the recorded message has been
sent, you will be able to refer to the directions at www.wnhs.org.

Post Prom News
ALL WNHS PARENTS: It’s not too early to start thinking about Prom…at least
not Post Prom! Our first meeting to start planning for Post Prom a.k.a. Operation
Safe Celebration will be held on Monday, October 24th at the Wheaton Park
District Community Center in the Central Room. Please join us!
Each year Operation Safe Celebration transforms the Wheaton Community
Center for two magical evenings for both the WWS and WN Post Prom parties.
Wheaton North’s Prom will be held on Saturday, April 28th, 2012. This will be
the 18th year of Operation Safe Celebration. It is a wonderful event that keeps
our children safe and supervised after the dance. It is a big production that takes
hundreds of volunteers to make successful. Any bit of help is appreciated. For the
parents of freshman and sophomores, this is a great opportunity for you to see
what it’s all about and get involved before your child attends the event.
If you’d like to learn more about this project and how you can become involved,
please contact Ann Impola at opersafecel@wnhsboosters.org or call 681-9623.

All orchestra families and friends are
invited to our first concert of the
year, which will take place on Tuesday,
October 25, at 7:00 PM, in Taylor

the Commons area during lunches on December 8th.
•Students will submit vouchers to teachers from December 9th through

from Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi. We are
honored to host Dr. Sarah Gentry, violin
professor at Illinois State University,
to perform Vivaldi’s famous “Winter”
concerto with us!
Our busy semester will also include our
department-wide Pancake Breakfast on
October 22, the IMEA District Honors
Festival, the annual Concerto-Aria
Competition, and the Holiday Concert.
In order to alleviate the issues of space
and time, and yet preserve the wonderful
collaborative event that is the Holiday
Concert, we will again divide the day’s
performances into two concerts, with
representation from all three branches
of the department on each concert.
Please watch for more details about
this arrangement as we move closer
to December!
We look forward to sharing some
amazing musical experiences with
you this year! Orchestra is a big deal
here at Wheaton North, and I look
forward to seeing many of you at
our performances!
Musically yours,
Mr. Philip Rudd

PICTURE IT @YOUR LIBRARY
The American Library Association has
set the week of October 16 thru 22
as TEEN READ WEEK. This year’s
theme is Picture it @ your library,
encouraging students to explore
Graphic Novels. It is important to
understand that a graphic novel is not
merely a big comic book. It is a book
length story that combines pictures
and text. They gained mainstream
acceptance with the 1986 publication
of the Pulitzer Prize winning Maus:
a survivor’s tale, which describes the
experience of the author’s parents
during the Holocaust. In 2000 graphic
novels became the fastest growing
segment of book publishing. Some have
even been made into movies The Road
to Perdition and 300 both started out
as graphic novels.* The Wheaton North
Library with input from students has
expanded its graphic novel collection
to over 150 titles. Some of the titles
include stories by William Shakespeare,
the 9/11 report, Superheroes and The
Odyssey. To add a bit of fun to the
week, the library will be hosting the
game Pictionary during lunch hours.
All students are encouraged to come in
during the week to check out the books
and enjoy some fun with friends.

Support Staff
One of our goals is for all students to
receive the best possible education and to
have a successful and rewarding experience
at Wheaton North High School. Many
adolescents, though, confront challenges
both in and out of school that may interfere
with their education and/or personal growth
if not properly addressed. In addition to our
teaching staff, we have a multitude of support
staff to assist our students. These include the
deans, guidance counselors, social workers,
school psychologists, school nurses, and
school liaison officer. Our support staff teams
meet weekly to discuss students who are at
risk to receiving a quality education due to
poor grades, attendance, behavior, and/or
outside influences. At these weekly meetings,
we also determine appropriate interventions
for these students. Parents and guardians are
also an important part of this team. We will
contact you to discuss our concerns and work
with you to devise a plan to assist your student.
Please contact a member of your student’s
support team if you have any questions
or concerns.

FRESHMAN
PARENTS
Students and parents should periodically
check the Guidance page at wnhs.org or
NAVIANCE for the most updated college
rep visit list. Students should also check the
bulletin board in the College Career Center
or the digital board in the commons for the
most updated schedule.
COLLEGE REPS AT
WHEATON NORTH
To attend a visit, students must request
a pass at least 24 hours in advance of
the scheduled visit from the Guidance

Financial planning and information gathering for college can never start
too early, so parents of students of all grade levels are encouraged to
attend. We hope to see you there!
HIGHLY SELECTIVE COLLEGE
INFORMATION SESSION & MOCK
ADMISSION WORKSHOP
Wednesday, December 7, 2011 7:00 – 9:00 PM
Have you ever wondered how the more selective colleges and universities
distinguish among seemingly equally qualified candidates? Why does one
student gain admission, another a place on the waitlist and a third a denial?
Come and learn more about the admission process at highly selective
institutions. This session will include information about the process as well
as a “Mock Admission Workshop” in whichYOU sit in the admission officer’s
seat. See how your student may put his/her best foot forward through
the application process. Former president of the National Association of
College Admission Counselors, Mary Lee Hoganson, and counselor Wendy
Biggs will facilitate an exercise that simulates what happens with student
applications during the admissions review process. Also, this workshop is
a direct result of the many survey comments from previous Junior Parent
Night, which requested more time for the Highly Selective College breakout
session. Come prepared to participate in group activities. Parents and
students of all grade levels are welcome.
N E W S
We are pleased to report that college
representatives continue to visit Wheaton
North during the first semester, to meet
with our students, teachers, counselors, and
parents. College representative meetings are
open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors and
are held in the College and Career Center.
The field trip is for sophomore and junior students only. If you have any
questions, please contact Carol McCallum at 630/784-7311.

COLLEGE REP VISIT LIST
Any student interested in attending TCD during their junior or senior year
should sign up to attend the Explore Day Field Trip at TCD scheduled for
Wednesday, Nov 16. All students will need to have a signed permission slip,
which will be mailed by TCD to all sophomore and junior WNHS students.
If you do not receive one, please come to the Guidance Office. The field trip
will be held during the morning and students will be bussed to and from the
TCD location in Addison. A complete tour of the facilities and explanation of a
variety of programming options will be discussed.
G U I D A N C E
Counselors are frequently visiting
freshman ACCESS periods during
first semester to allow students
and counselors the opportunity
to get to know each other better.
Counselors will also present much
information during these times on
goal setting (college and/or career),
strategies for adjusting to high school,
and graduation requirements and
proper course sequence. Finally, in
November/December
counselors
will assist students in creating a
four-year plan of study (of course,
this is a tentative plan). This plan
will focus on achieving high school goals
and ambitions, and begin to prepare
them for life after graduation.

TRANSCRIPT CHANGES
This year the University of Illinois
Urbana-Champaign will no longer
require an official transcript to be sent
at time of application. Instead students
will complete a self-reported Academic
Record. An official transcript will be
sent to UIUC after graduation with
student’s courses and grades for all eight
semesters of high school. Therefore, it
is imperative that students complete
the self-reported Academic Record as
accurately as possible. Students who are
unsure of a course or grade that appears
on their transcript (e.g. a freshman year
course) should see their counselor to
get clarification on the course/grade
in question.
*This fair tends to get very crowded, so it is highly
recommended to ARRIVE EARLY to ensure parking
A Frequently Asked Question:
“How Can I Find a Scholarship?”
Although there are some exceptions, most scholarships are only open to
seniors; however, it’s never too early to start looking! As the Guidance
Department hears about scholarship opportunities, we will list them in the
Scholarship Bulletin, which will be available beginning in October in the
College and Career Center and at www.wnhs.org>Student Services>Guidance
Department>Scholarships>Monthly Scholarship Bulletin. Students should
check the Scholarship Bulletin monthly, because the number of scholarships
increases as the year progresses. Another recommended source of scholarship
information is www.fastweb.com, where you can register and receive a
personalized list of scholarships for which you may apply. However, the
majority of financial aid and scholarships will come directly from the
college(s) financial aid office where your student is accepted, so they
are often the best source of information for students and families.

COLLEGE APPLICATION DEADLINES
Just a reminder, college admission deadlines are approaching fast. Every
senior had an individual conference with their counselor in September
where counselors stressed the importance of meeting these deadlines.
Also, many colleges require counselor and teacher recommendations,
so students should begin requesting these letters now. When requesting
these letters from teachers, students should provide a completed Teacher
Recommendation Form to the teacher. This form is located in the
College Career Center and the information requested will help the teacher
write a thorough and high quality recommendation.
Finally, we request students turn in their application and transcript request
form 10 School days prior to the application deadline. This allows
counselors to proofread and complete any attached materials, and read
any student essays before mailing them to the prospective colleges. The
following are WNHS college application deadlines.
Application Deadline: Nov. 1
Nov. 15 Dec. 1
Must be in Guidance by: Oct. 15 Oct. 25 Nov. 8
Jan. 1
Jan. 15
Dec. 7 Jan. 3
Application materials for the University of Illinois must be postmarked
no later than November 1st to meet their priority deadline. Priority
deadline for Illinois State and Northern Illinois is November 15th, so
apply early!!!
A HELPFUL HINT FOR JUNIORS –
The ACT/SAT Question of the Day!
In April all juniors will be taking the
ACT test as part of the PSAE, and some
juniors will be taking the SAT. There is
no denying the importance of the ACT/
SAT in regards to college admission.
Many students will sign up for test prep
classes in the spring to better prepare
themselves for the test. However, there
is no need to wait until spring to begin
preparing. All juniors should access
ACT.org and Collegeboard.org daily
to answer both sites Question of the
Day. These questions cover all areas of
both tests, give helpful hints to finding
the right answer, provide detailed
explanations on the correct answer,
and best of all the questions are FREE!
Go to http://sat.collegeboard.com/
practice/sat-question-of-the-day
to access the SAT question and go to
http://www.actstudent.org/qotd/
to access the ACT question. Another
helpful site is www.number2.com,
which provides not only a Question of
the Day, but a Word of the Day too.

From the Desk of Matt Fisher
Assistant Principal of Athletics & Curriculum
I hope you have gotten off to a terrific start to the 2010/ 2011 school year and
that you are excited to begin another season as a Falcon. Our winter sports will
be starting soon. I would like to encourage you to get involved in at least one
sport during your high school career. If you enjoy sports, this would be a perfect
opportunity to get started; the sooner the better. Most of our sports require a
progression from the freshman team up to the varsity level. Please do not wait –
start your freshman year the right way.We have had a very busy fall season here at
Wheaton North with all our fall sport programs. Many of you have been involved
and we encourage you to try a winter sport. Be a Falcon and join a team! We want
you! Listed below you will find information regarding all of the winter sports
programs. Hopefully this will answer most of your questions. However, if you
have questions, please do not hesitate to call the Athletic Office at 630-784-7318.
