Activity Areas at A Step Ahead Child Center Cribs Community Cubbies Babies need safe cribs. Caregivers need their backs. The cribs are not dropsides. The BackSafe cribs and BackSafe Evacuation cribs are certified for child safety and comply with new federal CPSC Rule CFR 1220 for crib safety. All children need their own personalized storage space sized specifically for them and their belongings. Cubbies are provided for each age group in each classroom. The cubbies help children establish routines and eases transition to school. Quality Furniture Changing Station Montesorri Chairs Wooden Furniture Toddlers need a changing station that promotes independence. The changing station contains fold-down, self-retracting steps that toddlers can climb. It also has a hidden childproof hamper. Infants and toddlers need chairs and tables sized and shaped specifically for them. The infants and toddlers can get in and out of, carry and push the Me-Do-It Chairs. All equipment in the Child Center is made in the USA. The equipment is made of soft maple wood that is covered with a water-based lacquer, which is non-toxic to humans. The Need for Children need child-size equipment. The furniture is lightweight and mobile. The furniture is also adjustable according to the size/height of the children. The furniture is child-friendly and allows them to easily see, find and access toys and materials in each activity area. What makes for a Safe Environment? • Developmentally appropriate equipment • Non-slip floors • Stable shelves, objects and fixtures with rounded corners • Steps toddlers can use to reach the changing station (no bending/lifting) Montesorri Multi-Tables Children need movable, heightadjustable tables. The multitables are strong and light, with adjustable legs that click to new heights in a few seconds, without the use of any tools. The multitables allow for flexibility in the classroom. Montesorri Shelving Each child needs an area for work and play. Each room is filled with shelving and storage islands that are sized and shaped specifically for each age group. The shelving and storage islands are used to divide each room into activity areas and contain books, toys and materials for each activity area. Each room has a Parent Communication area where teachers can welcome visitors, parents can sign-in/sign-out their child, and parents and teachers can exchange information. Gliders Caregivers can create a welcoming and nurturing environment for the children with the blue community gliders. The gliders can be used for oneon-one time (rock and cuddle children in comfort), curriculum theme-based activities and general supervision of children. Each classroom environment is designed in a manner in which children can reach, sit, play and work without constantly asking for an adult for access. The Need to Feel Secure Security Features Ever wonder who has access to your child while you are busy at work? Fear no more. The Child Center, the Outdoor Play Area and the Community Center are equipped with a safe and reliable key fobs control security system. Every scanned card is recorded. The Child Center is also equipped with an indoor video surveillance system for 24-hour monitoring of caregivers and children. Only currently registered parents/guardians of children and currently employed caregivers/teachers will have access to the children at any given time. The Need for Imagination Woodcrest Tables and Chairs Children need to feel at home. Both toddlers and preschoolers have a dramatic play area that contains furniture-for-play that has age-appropriate chair seat/table leg heights. The woodcrest tables and chairs are shaped to support the children’s best posture, allowing the children to feel relaxed and focused. Drama Center Children need a place for roleplay. The Drama Center for all children (except infants) contains a classic oval shape mirror, a stage area, hooks and totes for costumes and creative props, and 30 age-appropriate dress-up costumes and accessories. Woodcrest Kitchen Play-size Equipment Children need a place that invites play. Infants, toddlers and preschoolers each have their own kitchen that is child-level and equipped with knobs that turn, doors that open and raised burners for imaginative play. The kitchen includes a stove, sink, refrigerator, and cupboard and box car. The preschool area also contains a clothes washer. Children need a place that supports dramatic and social play. Preschoolers can “play for real” with a rocking cradle, an ironing board (with iron) that has a sturdy base with slanted legs to provide stability, a pushcart that is tip-resistant, a bed for dolls, and a doll high chair that children can easily lift and carry, using the side handle-holds. Dramatic play helps infants, toddlers and preschoolers learn about the people and roles around them. It gives them the opportunity to re-enact the events in their daily lives and stretches children’s imagination. Food Market Children need space for cooperative group play. The market area contains a canopy with fixed shelves, four shopping carts, healthy play food sets, two supermarket checkout counters and sturdy play money. Toddler Store Toddlers need a place to share. The toddlers have a village store that contains a toddler shelf and toddler canopy. The toddler shelf puts food and accessories within easy reach for toddlers. Quality, Quality, Quality All wooden furniture is made of soft maple wood that contains a clear, non-toxic finish, which is safe for children. The Need for Movement Nursery Gym Infants and toddlers need to move to build large motor skills and muscles. Infants and toddlers each have a nursery gym that contains stairs, slides and ramps to support gross motor play. The infants and toddlers can walk, climb, slide, crawl, jump and play in the nursery gym. Community Loft Children need a safe place for individual or group play. The community loft contains short, safe stairs for children to climb, carpeted platforms and panels for creative play, and head-room underneath for stand-up play. Children have opportunities to learn and grow when they engage in movement. Blocks and Riding Toys Children need to engage in active physical play. Unit, mini-unit, mini-hollow and hollow blocks, wooden trucks, a rocking boat, two wheelbarrows, airplanes and helicopters, tricycles and scooters are available for use in Center daily. Gymnasium Children need ample space to run, jump and play. The gymnasium measures 63’ 2 1/4” x 52’ 0” and has non-slip floors. The ceiling lights are protected by plastic tubing, which provides safety in the event that a fluorescent bulb becomes broken. The fixtures in the room are protected by stainless steel cages. The columns and walls in the room are protected by gym wall padding. The padding provides heavy-duty protection for indoor impact areas. All children will have access to the gym daily. The teachers and children will be taking a walk on Elcam’s 33-acre property each nice day. They will be using a walking rope made of strong nylon that has 12 colorful handles and large loop hands on each end for teachers. Infants Need Fresh Air Too Even infants can enjoy a stroll in the outdoors with the use of a KinderVan/6 with Canopies. The infants are securely fastened in the KinderVan with a fivepoint safety harness. This vehicle has puncture-proof wheels, an automatic safety brake and can handle grass, gravel and curbs with ease. All playground equipment in the Outdoor Play Area of the Child Center is made in the USA. Outdoor Play Area Children need a playground. Playing outdoors not only encourages social interactions but also provides natural stimulation. It also gives children the opportunity to just enjoy nature. Giant Box of Sidewalk Chalk The Outdoor Play Area has a rubber surface, which is safe for children for play. The Need for Literacy Listening Cube Rocking Chair Child’s Sofa and Armchair Children need a safe place to relax and listen to music and storybooks. A Listening Cube allows the children to use developmentally appropriate headphones to listen to age appropriate music or storybooks. Children need a child-size rocker for story time and for dramatic play. The old-fashioned rocking chair for preschoolers has a contoured seat and back and is almost impossible to tip over. What is the difference between a Library Shelf, a Library Rack and a Browser Box? The school-age children need a protected area for reading. The school-age children have a literacy corner where they can curl up on a child-size sofa or child-size armchair and read a good age-appropriate paperback book from their mini-library. The mini-library contains reference books, fiction and fact, and leveled readers, books for readers from Kindergarten to Grade 6. Children need a relaxing place to go with a good book. The child-size sofa and child-size armchair have a sturdy hardwood frame that is strong enough to hold a teacher. They also contain soft and durable foam cushions covered by tough, microbial, waterproof and stain resistant fabric. Books Children need safe access to books. Each room has a library shelf, library rack or browser box where all books are age appropriate, face outward and are at the children’s eye level. Books for infants and toddlers include board books only. Books for preschoolers include both picture and reading board books and paperback books. The preschoolers also have a Vocabulary Development Center. A library shelf or a library rack is movable and offers 12 linear feet of book display space on four levels. Big books are visible from both sides of the rack, and there is book storage space available on the shelves below and behind the racks. A browser box designed specifically for infants and toddlers is a low, versatile storage bin with high visibility. The infants can practice their walking skills as they search for their favorite book. Literacy Corner Books were purchased from two educational publishing companies, Teacher Created Resources and Usborne Books. The Need for Large Muscle Play With a Modular Block, the length of the block is 2x the width of the block, which is exactly 2x the thickness. Modular Blocks Children need space for openended play. Block play encourages both physical and cognitive development. Blocks are the cornerstone of developmentally appropriate play. Mini Unit Blocks Mini unit blocks, which are modular blocks, are small but safe and are designed for a toddler’s small hands and ideal for school-age tabletop play. Modular Block Sets Trucks & Aircraft Sets of Mini hollow blocks, Unit blocks and Hollow blocks are available for all children (except infants). Mini hollow blocks link Unit blocks and Hollow blocks. By combining all three sets of blocks, the children can enhance the variety and fun of block play. Children need vehicles for imaginative play. Vehicles include small tank truck, small dump truck, small semi, small flatbed, small fire truck, two helicopters, two airplanes, semi, two buses, flatbed and fire engine. All vehicles are made of durable hardwood, with gently rounded edges, a child-safe finish, and non-marking wheels and axles that won’t come off. Block Carts The block carts for the storage and transportation of all modular blocks are sturdy and easy to maneuver with 4” lockable swivel castors and convenient handlebars. The Strengths of Modular Blocks: • All edges are rounded for safety • All joints in the hollow blocks are securely fastened with recessed screws • All blocks are made of solid maple wood • Open ends allow little hands to pick the blocks up easily Starter Riser Kit Young children need to a place to create playscapes. The starter riser kit includes a riser rectangle, a riser square and two riser ramps. The carpeted risers can be used as a pathway or launching pad for trucks and aircraft or can be flipped over and used for children to climb. The connectors for the risers are toddler-proof yet teacherfriendly. Two Wheelbarrows Children love to move things from place to place. Each wheelbarrow is made of solid hardwood. Each wheelbarrow has two big 8” soft plastic tires that give the wheelbarrow plenty of stability and balance. The child-size wheelbarrows have enough cargo room for toys, blocks or even a small child! Children use their bodies to learn. That’s why we have invested in products that are safe, durable and simple. Rocking Boat Children need a place to safely rock together. The rocking boat has thick, rounded sides which provide a stable base and a quiet ride for children. The long shape of the rocking boat prevents tipping. The rocking boat fits up to four children. The Need for Old Art Blocks, trucks & aircraft, wheelbarrows, rocking boat, tricycles and scooters encourage children to work together and to have fun together. Puppet Theater Children need a place for imaginative play. The puppet theater in the infant room and in the toddler/preschool room has a reversible shelf for puppet and prop storage, a built-in stage with curtains and a window seat. The children can put on a grand puppet show using a variety of hand puppets and finger puppets available for use at the Child Center. Two Tricycles and Two Scooters Children need the toughest bikes on the block. The tricycles and scooters have durable, baked-on powder coating, which resists chips and dings. They also have sealed ball bearings that can handle years of vigorous use without maintenance. The tricycles and scooters also have cushioned handlebars to avoid finger pinches! The toddlers and preschoolers can use the tricycles and scooters in the Child Center or in the gymnasium of the Community Center. The sand and water center has pulleys, hoses and funnels that encourage children to experiment with weights, measures, volume and water flow. It also has sliding play shelves, flow pans and storage racks. The sand and water center is movable and height adjustable. The infants have their own Small Sand and Water Center while the toddlers and preschoolers have a Universal Sand and Water Center. The Sand and Water Center is used indoors and is wheelchair accessible. Practice shapes, uppercase/lowercase alphabet, numbers & operations with extra large sand molds in the Sand and Water Center. School-Age Children will be wearing Colored Safety Goggles for science activities. Science Center Preschoolers and school-age children need a space for exploration. The science center provides ways for the children to view, touch, sort and document their discoveries. They can become young scientists with the Science Set that contains counter, storage and bulletin display space and developmentally appropriate science tools, games and hands-on experiments. Mud Center Children need a place to experiment. The children will have a Mud Center (two raised plots with lots of good soil, play materials and an endless supply of water) located in the Outdoor Area of Elcam. Playing with mud is a sensory, messy, creative activity. Children will have the opportunity to play with mud during the summer months. The Need for Creativity Art Center Children need a place for creativity. Children can “shop around” for art and craft items and make choices about media and methods with the Help Yourself Trolley in the Art Center. The child-friendly, highly portable, awardwinning Help Yourself Trolley in the Art Center has eight green cups that hold brushes, sponges, Q-tips and other tools; slanted paper slots to hold different sizes of paper and also wider, deeper slots for paper rolls and cardboard; small totes for embellishments; dowels for ribbon, tape and twine; scissor storage; and three shallow totes and six deep totes for craft materials. The sturdy casters on the trolley ensure easy transport to all rooms in the Child Center. Art for Infants Drying Rack The infants need their own creativity area. The infants will have an eye-level floor easel, designed especially for children ages one to three years, to participate in the creative arts. The floor easel includes an easel frame, two whiteboards and 10 magnets. Art can help children develop Children need a safe, effective way to dry their art projects. The drying rack has an open back design that allows air movement to dry the paint while the bar at the back keeps the racks from sliding out. It has ten wire racks for drying art items, plus slots for an optional ten more, and a removable, easy-to-clean tray that catches paint drips! their conversation skills and vocabulary, to express concepts, and solve problems. Peg Tree & Tulip Aprons Two Multi-Purpose Easels Children and teachers alike have multiple creativity options with the Multi-Purpose Easel in the Art Center. The Multi-Purpose Easel, designed especially for ages two to adult, has two magnetic whiteboards that are cleanable and height adjustable and removable trays that hold art equipment and catch paint drips! Children need to dress accordingly when engaging in the creative arts. Children will wear tulip aprons for art. The tulip aprons are made of soft nylon and have hook & loop fastener. The tulip aprons are machine-washable and waterproof. The tulip aprons also have a sturdy loop hanger so the children can hang up their own aprons on the peg tree in the Art Center. The Need for Nourishment Plates, Bowls and Flatware Young children need developmentally appropriate cups, plates, bowls and flatware. Each child will eat meals and snacks using a divided dish with five deep compartments, a sippy cup or training cup based on age and development, a sip-abowl that has a built-in straw and a tot fork and spoon set. The set makes it is easy for young children to hold and scoop up food and liquids. It also eases the transition to grown-up flatware. Teacher’s Low Chair Teachers need comfortable seating at child-level for optimal care, play and learning with children. The teacher’s low chair allows the caregiver to interact with children and provide assistance to children during mealtimes or any activity. Toddlers and Preschoolers will have a 24” x 54” x 6” high Community Cot, Fitted Sheet and 36” x 59” Rest Time Blanket for naptime. The stackable cot has a sturdy, lightweight aluminum frame with durable corners, which are rounded for safety and are easy to clean. Air circulates freely through the extra strong polyester mesh covering the body of the cot. The elastic, poly/cotton knit fitted sheet stretches over the corners of the cot, so it stays in place when a child tosses and turns. The cozy fleece rest time blanket has knit binding and is designed to fit the Community Cot. The fitted sheet and the rest time blanket are machine washable. The Writing Nook allows the children to focus on schoolrelated work. The school-age children need a place for table play, which can be solitary play or cooperative group play, in the Games Area. School Time 4 Computer Workstations The school-age children need access to technology. The school-age children will have four Dell Optiplex 390 Desktop Personal Computers with Windows 7 Operating System; Microsoft Office programs and secure, wireless Internet access; and one HP Officejet Pro 8000 Wireless Inkjet Printer. Computer use is monitored by teachers and is for edutainment/ educational purposes only in the school-age room. A time tracker tag will be used to reinforce time limits. The Outdoor Area is a fenced area. The children will have access to the following equipment in that area: 1. Paved 1/8 Mile Walking Track 2. Open, Grassy Field for Contact Sports 3. Snack prep (afternoon snack) by Staff and schoolage children will usually take place in the school-age room of the Child Center. Adaptive eating utensils and plates, Good Grips Utensils, Forks and Spoons, and Round Scoop Dishes, are available if needed. Utility carts will be used for the transportation of food and drinks. Restrooms The restrooms in both Centers (all four) have one child-size toilet and one child-level sink and also have one wheelchair accessible toilet. Outdoor Area (fenced-in area) A Step Ahead Child Center is locally owned and operated by Elcam, Inc., a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors.
