SYMBOL DETERMINATION
Rules for use of symbols are detailed below.
All applications and change requests adding or replacing vehicles must include the complete Vehicle
Identification Number (VIN) for the vehicle.
If access to the electronic VIN inquiry is not available follow the steps below.
Cars
1. Find the symbol in the appropriate model year symbol page (for 1990 and newer use “Rating Symbol” column).
2. For rating of newly announced models for which no symbol is shown in this section, use the latest corresponding model shown until new pages are provided.
3. Symbols for other makes or models not displayed in this section shall be determined from the cost price new to the original purchaser as follows: a. Domestic cars are symbolled on the F.O.B list price including automatic transmission, radio, heater, power steering and all other equipment factory installed on 90% or more of the model. b. Imported cars are symbolled on the U.S. Port of Entry price in lieu of the F.O.B. price.
4. Vehicles of the 1986 model year on are adjusted for Vehicle Series Rating. Symbols for pre-1986 vehicles are not adjusted for damageability and may not be identical to the symbols used by other insurance companies.
5. Special equipment or alterations must be separately described and the cost new to the retail purchaser given. Increase the symbol as described under VANS (3.). Special equipment may include but is not limited to customized paint or upholstery, custom wheels or a sunroof, except such equipment as is required to be separately rated (C.B. radios, tape decks, mobile telephones, etc.).
Pickups
1. Find the symbol in the appropriate model year symbol page (for 1990 and newer use “Rating Symbol” column). DO NOT reduce the symbol.
2. For rating newly announced models, use the latest corresponding model shown until new pages are provided.
3. Symbols for other makes or models not displayed in this section shall be determined from the cost price new to the original purchaser (see CARS 3(a) and 3(b)). Do not reduce the symbol.
4. Vehicles of the 1988 model year on will be adjusted for Vehicle Series Rating. Symbols for pre-1988 vehicles are not adjusted for damageability and may not be identical to the symbols used by other insurance companies.
5. Special equipment or alterations must be separately described and the cost new to the retail purchaser given. Increase the symbol as described under VANS (3.). Special equipment includes but is not limited to winches, custom wheels, light bars, off-road lights, tonneau covers or over-size tires.
Vans
1. If a basic standard-equipped van is purchased either new or used, find the symbol in the appropriate model year symbol page (for 1990 and newer use “Rating Symbol” column).

2. For rating newly announced models, use the latest corresponding model shown until new pages are provided.
3. If a customized car, pickup or van is purchased, determine the base symbol from the pages and increase it by one for each $1000 or fraction of added value. Do not increase the base symbol if the added value is less than $500.
NOTE: A customized van is equipped with parts, equipment, furnishing or finishing considered optional for a standard-equipped van from the manufacturer. A motorhome is not considered a customized van under most circumstances.
4. If a van is purchased used, already customized or optionally equipped use the Van Worksheet (AF-14) to determine the proper symbol surcharge when physical damage is desired.

Motorhomes
Symbols are based on original “cost new” of the vehicle and age group.
“Cost new” is the retail cost to the original purchaser of the vehicle and it’s equipment, including charges for federal, state and local taxes.
Motorhomes are rated as private passenger vehicles.
