VA
Uses nearly 600 volunteer pilots licensed by the FAA
Planes range from 4 – 6 seat single and twin engine aircraft
Service is free to patients
Angel Flight pilots use their own fixed-wing aircraft to transport ambulatory patients.
They never charge for their service and pay for all expenses—fuel, repair and maintenance, landing fees, etc.
“To fly a trip for Angel
Flight provides a special blessing to my life.
I am allowed to indulge my love of flying and in doing so provide a service helpful to another person." (Cleve
Benedict, AFMA Pilot)
Sgt. Edward Matayka, a severely wounded Vermont National
Guardsman, was granted his wish: to greet his unit upon their return from deployment. Angel Flight pilots Chuck Van Nostrand and
Peggy Doyle flew the mission in
December 2010 in a stretcherequipped Beechcraft Bonanza.
Not only did Matayka get to greet his fellow soldiers when they arrived in Burlington, he was also able to thank the man who saved his life on the battlefield, Spc. David Schwerer.
Angel Flight pilot Charlie Poll of Ohio is holding his little buddy, Ethan. He calls him “a little boy full of fire.” Beside him is his dad, Chris.
Ethan was 7 months old and just beginning to walk when he became suddenly ill with a potentially fatal infection of the bloodstream. The choice was amputation or death, so of course his parents chose life.
He’s treated at Shriners Childrens
Hospital in Cincinnati, and Charlie is one of his many pilots. Now 4, Ethan feeds himself, walks on his rear end, and even fishes with a special apparatus made by his dad. "He's very smart and just as countrified-sounding as his daddy," said Chris, a sixth-generation farmer.
Richard Norris, 37, of Hillsville, Virginia, made world headlines when he received the most extensive face transplant ever performed. Angel Flight provided him with 78 trips to and from the
University of Maryland Medical Center (Shock and Trauma Center) over a period of years following a shotgun accident. One of these was the transplant flight. After living behind a mask and in seclusion for 15 years, he will now be able to rejoin human society.
…and they are available for you, your friends, colleagues, acquaintances, parents—anyone who is struggling with medical and financial challenges and needs free, non-emergency air transportation in order to access treatment. Patients must not require medical assistance during flight.
Our passengers are of all ages and typically include o
