2014-15 HOSA Competitive Event Topics and Procedure List The following information will help guide student competitors as they prepare for the 2015 SD HOSA State Leadership Conference (SLC). HOSA competitors should be fully aware of this information in regard to the procedures and event topics the conference is offering. Competitors are responsible for understanding and following the event guidelines. For events regarding procedures (ie: health professions and emergency preparedness events), competitors will be asked to complete up to 2 different procedures in that event. Health Professions Category: 1. Biomedical Lab Science (Round 1 Test Online---March 2-20) a. Competitors will complete two of the following four procedures: i. Procedure II: Infection control and transmission-based precautions ii. Procedure III: Inoculate and streak an agar plate iii. Procedure V: ABO blood grouping iv. Procedure VI: Gram stain 2. Clinical Nursing (Round 1 Test Online--- March 2-20) a. Competitors will complete two of the following four procedures: i. Procedure I: Administer medication intramuscular ii. Procedure III: Measuring oxygen saturation iii. Procedure IV: Discontinuing a peripheral IV access iv. Procedure VI: Applying a nasal cannula or oxygen mask 3. Nursing Assisting (Round 1 Test Online--- March 2-20) a. Competitors will complete two of the following four procedures: i. Procedure I: Hand-washing ii. Procedure II: Make a closed bed iii. Procedure V: Transfer patient with specified disability from bed to a wheelchair iv. Procedure VI: Measure and record vital signs: TPR and blood pressure (aneroid) 4. Physical Therapy (Round 1 Test Online--- March 2-20) a. Competitors will complete two of the following four procedures: i. Procedure I: Ambulating with a transfer (gait) belt ii. Procedure II: Ambulating with a cane iii. Procedure IV: Range of motion iv. Procedure V: Ambulating with crutches 5. Medical Assisting a. Competitors will complete two of the following four procedures: i. Procedure III: Obtain and Record a Patient Health History ii. Procedure IV: Measure Height and Weight iii. Procedure VI: Screen for Visual Acuity iv. Procedure VIII: Sterile Gloving 6. Sports Medicine (Round 1 Test Online--- March 2-20) a. Competitors will complete two of the following four procedures: i. Procedure I: Flexibility Exercises ii. Procedure IIA: Assess ROM and strength testing of shoulder iii. Procedure IIB: Assess ROM and strength testing of ankle and foot iv. Competitors will complete two of the following four procedures: i. Procedure I: Preparation of the operative site ii. Procedure II: Lifting and restraining a dog iii. Procedure VII: ID of companion animal breeds/species iv. Procedure VII: Apply/Remove gauze restraint muzzle 8. Home Health Aide (Round 1 Test Online--- March 2-20) a. Competitors will complete two of the following four procedures: i. Procedure I: Taking an adult tympanic temperature ii. Procedure II: Taking an apical pulse iii. Procedure III: Emptying a drainage unit iv. Procedure IV: Changing a dry dressing using non-sterile technique 9. Dental Science (Round 1 Test Online--- March 2-20) a. Competitors will complete two of the following four procedures: i. Procedure II: Seating the dental patient ii. Procedure III: Dismissing the dental patient iii. Procedure IV: Patient education-Brushing and flossing iv. Procedure VI: Identify instruments (including name of instrument and purpose or use) 10. Clinical Specialty a. Teams will complete two of the following four procedures: The team will have to perform one in each category. i. First Aid Procedure II: Choking (Rescuer 1 initiates) ii. First Aid Procedure III: Compound fracture and splinting (Rescuer 1 initiates) iii. BLS Procedure VII: Adult BLS/CPR (Rescuer 1 assists) iv. BLS Procedure VIII: Adult BLS with AED (Rescuer 2 initiates/Rescuer 1 assists) 2. EMT (Round 1 Test Online--- March 2-20) a. Teams will complete two of the following four procedures i. Procedure I: Patient Assessment-Trauma ii. Procedure IVB: Spinal Immobilization- Supine patient iii. Procedure IVD: Immobilization/splinting- Long bone Injury iv. Teams will debate the following topic i. 2014-15 Topic: E-cigarettes: More harmful to your health than regular cigarettes ii. The affirmative will argue that e-cigarettes are more harmful to your health than regular cigarettes. The negative will disagree. Questions to consider may include but are not limited to: How are e-cigarettes regulated? What are the ingredients of e-cigarettes?
