The group hopes to educate parents and other gift shoppers through awareness efforts all throughout the month about the importance of toy safety and keeping children safe especially during the gift giving season. In 2011 the Consumer Product Safety Board reported that there were 262,300 toy related injuries that received treatment in a United States ER. Toys are meant to be used as a developmental tool as well as a recreational activity for children, not to cause harm. Some simple tips to keep in mind when considering a toy purchase for a child: 1) Research the toy you wish to buy. Read blogs, check the company’s website and even take a look at the Consumer product safety board’s website for a list of recalled toys. 2) Check the label for age appropriateness. Make sure to pay attention to the labels on the packaging when it comes to the age restrictions listed. Also keep in mind the child’s own maturity level when purchasing a toy for them. 3) Inspect toys for small parts or any parts that have the potential to become dislodged during play. 4) Provide proper safety equipment when giving sporting goods as gifts. Equipment may include: Helmets, protective pads, facemasks and eyewear. 5) Explain to the child how to use and play with the toy. Supervise playtime to ensure child is using the toy in the correct manner. If your child suffers a toy related injury it is important to seek immediate medical assistance to ensure the health and wellness of your child. How can Healthchoice assist you in this sort of situation.? We can provide you with a list of urgent cares or ER’s in your area and direct you to our claims department for any benefit questions you may have. Lastly we, the staff of Healthchoice would like to wish every team member and their families a joyous and happy holiday season. A Healthy Workforce is a Safe Workforce It’s not too late to get your free flu vaccine. The 2013 - 2014 flu shot campaign is in full swing and is open to all team members, volunteers and staff physicians in convenient locations throughout the organization. You may go to home page of SWIFT and do the following: Select the "Flu shot online form" icon to document if you are receiving, declining or have already received this year's seasonal flu vaccine. Select the "Flu shot schedules and locations" icon to see where the flu shot is being provided. All Orlando Health team members are required to complete a flu vaccine form to document if they are receiving or actively declining this year’s seasonal flu shot. The seasonal influenza vaccine provides the best protection available from seasonal flu. It can decrease illness severity, which is particularly important for healthcare workers who may be at higher risk of contracting and spreading the flu due to close contact with patients and guests. Give it a shot and protect yourself from the flu virus! For more information, go to the Occupational Health Department site on SWIFT.
