Project Details:
1. Preliminary Research Planning Worksheet
This worksheet will be handed out in class and must be turned in with your project. It requires you to
outline all the preparatory work that went in to creating the bibliography. This includes: original topic idea,
reference tool used for background research, synonyms and other search phrases, Library of Congress
Subject headings (that relate to the topic), focused research question or statement, Boolean search syntax
for search engines etc. Please refer to the sheet for more specific details.
2. Citations
The citations for your final project must meet the following requirements:
R Highest quality research information.
R Five citations from the following sources:
o 1 background library reference source (include a copy of the title page of the book)
o
1 circulating library book (include a copy of the title page of the book)
o
1 journal article (include a copy of the first page of the article)
o
1 detailed/lengthy newspaper article (include a copy of the first page of article)
o
1 reputable web site focused on your topic or a detailed web site article (should be lengthy
not just a short article) (include a copy of the first page of web site)
R For each citation you should:
o Supply accurate information about the source in MLA citation style
o
Write a 4-6 sentence annotation for each citation (based on the annotation criteria given below).
o
Write which tool you used to find each source (library catalog, print periodicals index (provide
index title), online periodicals index (provide title of database), reference area, world wide web
search engine name etc.)
3. Annotations
The purpose of the annotation is to inform your readers of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the
sources cited. You should write the annotations for your citations based on the following criteria:
R Summarize the content of the information source.
R Evaluate the authority/background of the author and the credibility of the information.
R Discuss the accuracy and quality of the information.
R Explain how the source is relevant to your topic.
Example of a good annotation
Example of a bad annotation
This article shows that children of alcoholics and substance
abuse parents are associated with significant medical and
psychosocial problems. Children of alcoholics (COAs) are much
more likely to abuse alcohol and other drugs, and have higher
rates of anxiety, depression, poor academic function, and
antisocial personality traits. I judged the credibility of this
source based on the fact that the article was published in a
scholarly journal (the American Academy of Pediatrics), and it
contained a bibliography of the sources used. The information
validates some of the social and physiological factors that
influence children to alcohol abuse.
The article told me about children of
alcoholics. It was good.
