ORGANIC CHEMISTRY 308 Sections H1/H2
SUMMER 2009
Lecturer:
Prof. John W. Taylor
E-mail: taylor@rutchem.rutgers.edu (you must use "308H" in the subject heading)
Office: Wright-Rieman Chemistry Bldg (WRC), room 278, Busch Campus.
Office Hours:
Mondays and Wednesdays, 4-5 pm, WRC 278.
General:
Text Book: Vollhardt & Schore, "Organic Chemistry: Structure and Function", 5th edition
(required), Study Guide (optional, but recommended) and molecular models (optional).
Lectures: MTWTh, SEC 111, 9:00am - 10:40am
Exams:
General: All exams and quizzes are closed book, and students are not allowed to share
information in any way. The use of calculators and cell phones is not allowed at any time
during exams and quizzes. Molecular models may be used but not shared. Photo IDs are
required for all exams and will be checked individually in every exam.
Midterm exams: Midterm exams will be given on Monday, July 20, and Monday, Aug 3,
during the normally scheduled class time. These exams will be 75 min. in duration, and will
consist of five multiple-choice questions and 10-15 questions requiring short written answers,
possibly including chemical structure drawings, reaction mechanisms and other diagrams, short
written explanations, nomenclature or short calculations. These exams will each be worth a
maximum of 50 points, with each question worth 2-4 points, as indicated on the exam. Partial
credit will be given for some written responses.
Final Exam: The Final exam will be given on Wednesday, Aug 12, at 9:00am. The exam
will be 150 min. in duration, and will consist of 20 multiple-choice questions and 15-20
written-answer questions. Each question will be worth 2-4 points, for a maximum score of 100.
Quizzes: Quizzes (15 min. each) will be given during the scheduled recitation periods on the
following days: July 9, July 15, July 23, July 29 and August 6. These quizzes will consist of
3-4 questions worth 2-3 points each, for a maximum score of 10 points per quiz.
Grades: The final grade will be determined directly from the total points accumulated from all
exams and quizzes out of a maximum of 250 points. Students who obtain at least 80% of this
total (200 points) are guaranteed to receive an A grade; at least 65% (163 points) guarantees a
B grade, and at least 50% (125 points) guarantees a C grade.
Missed Exams: All exams must be taken at the scheduled times and places. If you fail to take an exam or
quiz at the scheduled time and place for any reason, you must provide a letter of excuse from
your Dean, or you will receive a score of zero (0) for that quiz or exam. No exceptions!
Conflict Final:
If another Rutgers course conflicts with the Final Exam, a conflict exam will be given on Aug
11, at 3:00 pm, by prior arrangement with Prof. Taylor. At least one week's notice is required.
Homework:
This is a very demanding course! You must keep up with the material that is being covered in
lectures and recitations. It is recommended that you read the text before the material is covered
in lecture, then review your notes and the book and do the assigned problems immediately
afterwards on the same day. Some exam questions will be derived from the homework
problems directly. Forming small study groups (3-4 students) is recommended, and reading the
material in a different textbook is helpful. Old exams will be made available on the Chemistry
Department web site for this course (see below).
Postings:
For the purposes of posting scores and grades, you will be confidentially assigned a number
that is specific to you and to this course. Remember it! Exam scores, grades and answer keys
will be posted on the Chemistry Department web site for this course, using these numbers. To
find this site, go to <http://rutchem.rutgers.edu>, select Undergraduate Study, then "Course
pages", then "Chemistry 308". Other course information will also be posted at this site.
Lecture notes:
Lecture notes will be posted on the Chemistry Department web site for this course (see above)
on a daily basis, usually in the same afternoon following each lecture.
