GBBT 1.1
Guests depart USA for an overnight flight to Brussels, Belgium
Wed 29
WELCOME TO BELGIUM, WESTVLETEREN In De VREDE CAFE, ST BERNARDUS
Your flight arrives this morning at Brussels Airport where
the GBBT luxury motor coach awaits to drive you to Beer
Heaven; Westvleteren’s In de Vrede café for Westy 12’s
and lunch.
After lunch we drive nearby to St Bernardus for a tour and
tasting of the secular version of Westy 12 (The fellow on
The Abt 12 label wears the attire of a lawyer, not a monk).
Then it’s off to our Gent hotels, to check-in and get ready
for this evening’s GBBT Ghent Ultimate Pub Crawl to
Waterhuis, De Dulle Griet, Gruut Brewpub and The infamous Bicycle Bar –
Beginning with our host asking you “Do you Like Belgium Beer?”… well, of course!

Thu 01
GHENT, GRAVENSTEEN CASTLE, HUYGHE (Delirium) & DE GLAZEN TOREN
After a leisurely breakfast you have the morning to explore the nearby 12th c Gravensteen
Castle modeled on the Crusader’s castles in the Holy Land. Gravensteen has been beautifully
restored and is still partially surrounded by the medieval moat. Check out the castle’s crypt, a
museum of old weapons - crossbows, rifles and armor and it’s incredible 3 story underground
dungeon with instruments of torture which is the oldest in Europe. (It’s rumored that one GBBT
wag placed a can of Jupiler lager on display with the other cruel devices of torture).
A bit before noon, our GBBT luxury motor coach will drive us
from Ghent to a sleepy little Belgian village called Erpe-Mere
near Aalst and the De GLAZEN TOREN (The Glass Tower)
brewery where, within a modern housing neighborhood we’ll
find this fascinating Brewer of “Saison d’Erpe Mere”,Tripel
“Ondineke”, a Winter Scotch “Canaster” and a 4 grains double
white beer “Jan de Lichte” all hailed by Beer Advocate, Rate
Beer and O’Brien’s Patrons as delicious, intelligent and
contemporary models of Belgian ales. Brewer/Author Jeff van
Den Steen will show us the brewery, and lead a tasting.

HUYGHE (Delirium) & DE GLAZEN TOREN BREWERIES, BRUGES PUB CRAWL
After De Glazen Toren the GBBT luxury motor coach takes us to Delirium… that is to the
HUYGHE BREWERY near Ghent. It’s been several years since we enjoyed our last visit to
Huyghe – brewers of Delirium Tremens and with their installation of a brand new brewhouse,
we figured it was time to return for a look at the new brewery and an always enjoyable tasting.
After our days brewery visits our GBBT motor coach will drive us to Bruges for the
GBBT BRUGES ULTIMATE PUB CRAWL visiting the city’s top
pubs. We’ll start with a tasting at De Struise’s Brewery Tap take
time for dinner, check out a few master chocolatiers then
continue our crawl with visits to De Garre and t’Brugse Beertje.
On our 2011 Great British & Belgian Christmas Beer
tour we discovered an excellent new Spare Rib (a
Flemish specialty) restaurant; BRUGES RIBS N BEER
where they serve superb beer and delicious all-you-can
eat Spare Ribs. Join us for ribs that trump our favorite
restaurant in Ghent!
At the end of our pub crawl we’ll train
back to our Ghent hotels to get some
rest for tomorrow’s Awesome Day and
Night of visiting 3 Gueze & Lambic
breweries, Oud Beersel Castle and our“Small night of The Great Gueze”
private festival at the pub with Insurance Against the Great Thirst where
we’ll enjoy five Gueze poured direct from wooden casks!

OUD BEERSEL, 3 FONTEINEN, TIMMERMAN BREWERIES & BEERSEL CASTLE
Well rested and having enjoyed a great Belgian breakfast we embark on the days’ journey into
the mystery that is Gueze! The GBBT luxury motor coach will drive us from Ghent to The OUD
BEERSEL brewery south of Brussels for a visit to the museum brewery and to enjoy a tasting
of their award winning Gueze
A short drive away amidst the lush, Senne
Valley landscape lies the extraordinary
BEERSEL CASTLE. Built by Godefroid
de Hellebeke in the 13th century it’s one of
few remaining examples in Belgium of a
military fortress from the Middle Ages. The
Castle of Beersel is a formidable
architectural structure, with three tall
defensive towers and a moat that made it a
serious stronghold in its’ day. The castle
was only conquered once and remains
largely unchanged from how it appeared
when it was restored towards the end of the
5th century. Part of the castle still lies in
ruins, which gives it a slightly eerie and
intimidating edge.
We’ll drive on to 3 FONTEINEN, we’ll
be met by master brewer and blender
Armand Debelder. A tour of the brewery
will be followed by a tasting and lunch
at the 3 Fonteinen Restaurant
Sit back and relax with one of our
delicious Beersel Quark Cheese
sandwiches or enjoy typical local dishes
including rabbit in Geuze sauce, guinea
fowl in Kriek and Flemish stews made
with 3 Fonteinen.

TIMMERMAN BREWERY & THE SMALL NIGHT OF THE GREAT GUEZE FESTIVAL
Timmermans has been brewing in Itterbeek for more than 300 years, founded in 1702. A few
miles from Brussels it was then called The Mole Brewery. It was also a farm, orchard, café and
malting house. In the 20th century the sixth generation the brewery changed its name to The
TIMMERMAN BREWERY. Bourgogne des Flandres was born in Bruge at the Beginning of the
20thcentury. For seven generations the Van Houtryve family has been keeing an eye on the
unique and very old brewing process – infusion of Lambic – in this process a selection of the
best lambic is mixed with high fermentation ale.
Tonight our great friend Yves Paneels who created The Nacht De Grote Dorst Gueze &
Lambic Festival has created “THE SMALL NIGHT OF THE GREAT GUEZE FESTIVAL”
a special private Gueze & Lambic festival for just ourselves, our friends from Ale Street News
and Lorenzo Da’Bove’s group from Italy at The Pub with Insurance Against The Great Thirst.
Yves will have a large tent in the market square pouring rare Guezes from the wood along with
Brughelian music played on guitar, accordion and bagpipes. There’ll be a BBQ and food to
purchase along with 5 Gueze straight from wooden casks from De Troeg; Timmermans,
Frank Boon, Oud Beersel and another. Plus more than 75 vintage and contemporary Gueze &
Lambics at the no-host bar.
Willem Van Hedeweg - the brewer who worked with Armand Debelder to create 3 Fonteinen’s
Millennium Gueze has been working with Timmermans to make a great new Lambic which will
be poured at our “Kleine Nacht de Grote Lambics”
“In Tegen der Verzaikering de Grote Dorst”
(Pub that Insures against the Great Thirst)

CANTILLON BREWERY & THE 2012 ALVINNE CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL
This morning our GBBT luxury motor coach
drives us to Brussels to visit Cantillon’s twiceannual Open Brewing Day where LAMBIC,
GUEUZE, FARO and KRIEK are made and
where nothing has changed since 1900 when
it was founded. The Van Roy-Cantillon family
welcomes us to discover a fabulous world
where beers, tools and brewing processes are
the same as they were at the turn of the 20th
century. When we visited them in December
they still bottles of Zwanze. It was Brilliant, and
with any luck we might taste some!
After our morning at Cantillon, we’ll head southwest for
The 2012 Alvinne Craft Beer Festival
“ A Yearly Discovery of the World’s Most Innovative Microbreweries”
Brouwerij Alvinne (Belgium); Struise Brouwers (Belgium); H.Ertie geuzesteker
& lambic selection (Germany/Belgium); Brouwerij De Molen (Netherlands);
Brouwerij Emelisse (Netherlands); Fano Bryghus/Grassroots Brewing Co
(Denmark/USA); Haandbryggeriet (Norway); Thornbridge (England); Marble
(England); Dark Star (England); Hawkshead (England); London Brewers
(England): Twickenham Fine Ales; Brew Wharf; Redemption. We’ll enjoy four
hours at the festival and return to Gent for an evening of independent dining
and pub crawling.
Sun 04
SEACHING FOR URTHELS & THE 2012 ALVINNE CRAFT BEER FESTIVAL
Urthel was one of this century’s first innovative brewers
creating . Hop-It - the first Imperial IPA brewed in Belgium.
We’ll be welcomed by Hildegard and Bos van Ostaden;
The brewer and imagineer- marketer couple who’ve created
award winning beers and a world of imaginary creatures one
becomes friends with whilst drinking Urthel beer. You’ll know
this when you toast these mythical creatures with “Pache’”
This afternoon, just to make sure we haven’t missed any
thing of the extraordinary and innovative beers, we’ll board the GBBT
luxury motor coach for a second visit to the 2012 Alvinne Craft Beer Festival.
Late this afternoon we’ll return to Gent and the
wonderful Waterhuis pub for a Farewell to
Belgium beer or three.

RODENBACH, HET ANKER & KULMINATOR
This morning we leave Ghent behind for a night in Antwerp. Enroute the GBBT luxury motor
coach drives us to RODENBACH BREWERY for a tour of the 235+ two story oak barrels of
Flemish sour red ale. We’ll enjoy a special Rodenbach lunch of Charcuterie Salad with Grand
Cru dressing, followed by the Chef’s dish of the day, market-fresh vegetables in Rodebach
sauce, potatoes, paired with of Rodenbach and Rodenbach Grand Cru and then enjoy an Ice
cream desert with fruit coulis flavored with Frank Boon’s Kriekbeer finishing with coffee.
It is a pleasure and honor to be so often and well received at one of Belgiums founding family
breweries; HET ANKER brewers of Gouden Carolus owner Charles Lefevre. This afternoon
we’ll have a brief tour of the brewery, then enjoy tasting of a number of Gouden Carolus
including perhaps some of their vintage ales! Afterwards we’ll drive on to Antwerp and check
into our hotels, have some time for an independent dinner.
Among Antwerp’s many Architectural and
Scenic wonders is the ruin of Steen Castle
What you see today are the leftovers of
Antwerp’s oldest building, just a small part
of what it used to be.
Should you pass by the castle, look above the
Entrance, there you will see a statue of Semini,
a Scandinavian God for youth and fertility.
Originally, this statue had a big phallus but
Jesuits got rid of it in the 17th century.

across from Antwerp’s Centraal Station and just a few blocks from one of the world’s great
beer café’s; KULMINATOR Café where our hosts Leen and Dirk stock what must be the best
collection of vintage Belgian Ales ever.
Tue 06
LA TRAPPE BREWERY, DE MOELEN BREWERY, AMSTERDAM PUB CRAWL
This morning the GBBT luxury motor coach drives us north for our annual Must Visit to
LA TRAPPE the only Dutch Trappist Brewery for a tour by our pal and head brewer Lodewijk
(Ludwig) followed by a tasting of their superb ales and a lunch snack of Paterkaas (Abbey
Cheese) and Bitterballen a delicious Dutch treat (Beef stew in a fried ball), you’ll only want, say,
twenty of these! For our past few visits, Lodewijk has shared his latest barrel-aged Quadrupel’s
long before they were released to the public!
Our GBBT luxury motor coach then drives us
north stopping at De Moelen – The Windmill
Brewery for a tour, tasting and dinner!
We’ll taste some of Menno Olivier’s cutting edge,
extreme beers and then settle back for a short
drive to Amsterdam our hotels and The GBBT

THE GBBT AMSTERDAM ULTIMATE PUB CRAWL
This evening, after a brief respite in our hotels we will meet at our favorite
Amsterdam pub De WILDEMAN for a Welcome to Amsterdam pint of Dutch
or Belgian Trappist ale. Tucked away in a 16th century alley this wood
-paneled “Bier-Proeflokaal” (beer tasting house) dates from 1690. The tile
floor and rows of bottles and jars behind the counters are remnants of its
earlier days, when it functioned as a distillery. Today it serves 17 draft and
200 bottled beers from around the world. It’s the GBBT Mothership in A’dam.
After De Wildeman, we suggest that folks create pods of four to six
persons and begin an impromptu pub crawl exploring the classic beer
proflokal (beer professional) pubs of Old Amsterdam with your GBBT
Amsterdam Ultimate Pub Crawl
Guide a guide to our favorite and
most interesting (in both ales and
history) Amsterdam pubs. Don’t
miss the Bekeerde Suster brewpub
on the Muntplein, a few blocks
down from Dam Square. The
gleaming copper kettles are for
display only, but downstairs they
brew four styles of delicious beer
