Private Scholarships
Where to Look:
~ Ask your high school counselor or college career center about local and national
scholarships.
~ Check out the college section of your public library. (Start by looking for the College Board
Scholarship Handbook.)
~ Look into religious, community service, fraternal, military, union, or professional
organizations with which you or your parents are associated.
~ Ask your parents to check with their employers.
~ Check to see if your state offers scholarship/grant programs for its residents (especially if you are
planning to attend school in your home state.)
~ Access your college’s web site, catalog, and financial aid office to find out what kind of
scholarships are offered by your college.
~ Try using a free online scholarship search to generate a list of scholarships you may be
eligible to receive. (See above for a list of recommended financial aid web sites.)
Tips for Scholarship Success
~ Start your research early. (Some scholarships deadlines are in early fall of senior year.)
~ Read eligibility requirements carefully.
~ Organize your scholarship materials. Try keeping a separate file for each scholarship and
file by application date. Keep track of application deadlines and follow-up appointments.
~ Have a parent, teacher, or friend proofread your application.
~ Check to make sure you haven’t left sections of the application blank.
~ Follow application instructions. Don’t go over the length limit for essays and resist sending
supporting materials that are not requested.
~ Make your application legible.
~ Make copies of everything you send.
~ Get your applications in early to avoid missing deadlines.
~ Consider using certified mail or return receipt.
Beware of Scholarship Scams
PHEAA recommends families be wary of financial aid offers. Consumers lose millions of
dollars in scholarship scams each year. For more information please visit:
http://www.pheaa.org/about/media/2011/Feb_14_11.shtml
Be suspect of scholarship services who say or do any of the following:
~ “The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.” No one can guarantee that they’ll
get you a grant or scholarship. Refund guarantees often have strings attached.
~ “You can’t get this information anywhere else.” There are many free ways to look for
scholarships. Check out the resources yourself before you consider paying someone.
~ “Your credit card or bank account number is needed to hold this scholarship.” This may
be a setup for an unauthorized withdrawal from your account.
~ “This scholarship will cost money.” Don’t pay anyone who is “holding” a grant for you.
~ “You’ve been selected” or “You’re a finalist” in a contest you never entered. Make sure the
program is legitimate before doing anything.
