very individual in the animal welfare
business has a different vision of what
the future will hold. Some believe
you must go forth and spay and neuter
every animal possible to get control of pet
overpopulation, one of the main reasons
animal welfare organizations exist. Others
believe we can adopt our way out of the
crisis. Still others are advocates of education
and awareness for the next generation’s
responsibility of saving animals and
preventing cruelty. All are correct.
and believing in the care, treatment and life
quality of animals.
Whatever you believe, we can all agree
there is a lot of work to do before any animal
welfare organization can rest. Until all lost,
stray, abandoned and unwanted animals
have a secure, loving home, we must keep
forging ahead to get ever closer to this goal.
As the cold snow flies, even here in Atlanta,
the thought that so many of our little furry
friends will be safe and warm in the future
because of the support of our donors,
volunteers and community, gives the spring
Pet Parade an ever greater importance for
our Walk into the Future, saving the most
lives of as many animals as humanely
possible.
The compassion and dedication of humane
people will always keep the animal’s life
and welfare as their beacon of guidance for
future success.
Atlanta Humane Society envisions its future
as an organization saving the most lives of
as many animals as our resources, personnel
and financial ability will allow.
That is why we are in the process of
doubling our geographical size and
capabilities with the addition of a second
location, the AHS Mansell Road Campus
located in North Fulton County. This facility
will open in late 2011.
Over the 138 years of Atlanta Humane
Society’s success and accomplishments,

has been a stellar partner supporting AHS

SPRING 2011
A large element of the vast support that
allows us to help so many animals comes
in the form of attending events held as “fun”
fundraisers such as our upcoming Pet Parade.
The long running Pet Parade gives everyone
a chance to have fun with their pets, yet still
perform a heartwarming, unselfish act of
support assisting AHS in helping so many
animals in need.
Thanks for your support. We will always
strive to make you proud of your Atlanta
Humane Society.
Cooper, a happy former AHS resident, and
I look forward to greeting you at the Pet
Parade.

Fireman to the Rescue
AHS President Carl Leveridge presented Capt. Chris Holder, FF2
Scott Baker, FAO Clint Martin, and FAO Robert Milton with plaques
of recognition for their bravery. The Truck 20 Crew from the DeKalb
County Fire and Rescue Department responded to an apartment fire
on November 16, 2010. They were able to rescue two dogs from
the third floor balcony and reunite the pets with their families. Thank
you so much guys! You truly are heroes to both people and pets!
1873 Society Club
Now in it’s second year, the junior board of the Atlanta Humane
Society, the 1873 Society Club, is looking forward to another
great year of fundraising and events. In 2011 our mission has
expanded to include all rescues by the HEART vehicle, including
puppy mills, dog fighting rings, hoarders and disaster areas as well
as the Mobile Spay/Neuter Vehicle. All funds raised this year will
be dedicated to this tremendous cause.
Bringing together three Atlanta legends, the Atlanta Humane Society, SweetWater Brewing Company and Yacht Rock Revue invite
you to join us on March 29th from 6 – 9pm at SweetWater Brewing Company for beer tastings, brewery tours and a souvenir pint
glass, all while enjoying incredible music as we look forward to the
coming of warmer months!
Yes, it’s that time of year again! The Atlanta
Humane Society’s successful fundraiser, No
Ball At Allsm, is in full swing. 2011 is the 20th
year for our signature ‘non-event’. Over the
years, No Ball At All has raised much needed
funds to help care for our agency’s “Society
Pets.” So, instead of having a fancy party
and paying for food, entertainment, and
decorations, all the money raised goes to help
the AHS’ homeless pets.
However, if you do want to get together with
fellow animal lovers, a No Ball At Allsm Patron
Party will be hosted by Board member Pam
Ward Smart in the spring. This event is open
to all donors who make a No Ball gift of at
least $350 per person. Once again, Knox
Jewelers is donating a custom-designed pin,
Johnny Cain of Southern Style Studio has
agreed to photograph the event for us, Atlanta
Flower Market is providing our centerpieces,
and Extreme Staffing is providing bartenders.
If you’d like to receive an invitation or
you need more information, please call
404.974.2878.
Purchase tickets by March 1st for an advanced promotion price of
$
30. After that, tickets will be $40, and $45 at the door.

Grieving for an animal companion?
To help people cope with the death of a pet, the AHS offers Mend-A-Heart group
counseling sessions. These hour-long sessions are held at the Shelter on the second
Saturday of each month at 11:00am in the Administrative Area.
Mend-A-Heart sessions are conducted by a friend of the AHS, Linda Ehlers, who holds
a Masters degree in community counseling and education from Georgia State University.
Ms. Ehlers is also available for individual counseling (call 404.250.9148). The main
objective of the group is to generate mutual support and comfort for each other.
For more information, please call the AHS Education Department at 404.974.2899.
The cost is $5 per person.

Friends For Life
Dear AHS,
Ripley, the cream-colored dog on the left, came into my life on September 30, 1992. I first laid eyes on her the day before, but since
she was a “found dog”, she still had a day to go before she was
eligible for adoption. I was afraid that someone else might be interested in her so I made sure I returned bright and early the next day
to ensure I could take her home. She’s been nothing but a joy in my
life ever since. Ripley is a sweet dog who always has a kiss for you.
Scout, the red dog on the right, was added to the family on June 1,
1995. I wanted to get Ripley a companion and she came with me
and a friend to the shelter that day. We took a look at Scout, who
was in the older dogs area even though she was still only a few
months old. We decided to go look at the other dogs on the next
row of pens and couldn’t believe our eyes when Scout came bounding around the corner to find us. We were sure we had put her back
in her pen and latched the door. We put her back and returned to
the next row of pens. We turned around to find she had followed us
again. This time, as we put her back, we stood a few feet away to
see how it was that she was escaping from her pen. To our amazement, she was able to squeeze out through the slot in the door used for
feeding. That was it. Our search was over. She needed to come home
with us. From day one, Scout has been loyal, attentive and loving.
I am very grateful that both stayed as healthy and active as they
did. Ripley was deaf and had arthritis and a heart murmur but none
of that slowed her down, particularly at meal time or when there
were treats to be had. Scout still gets very excited when it’s time for
a walk or a ride in the car. Every once in a while, she gets a burst
of energy that matches that of any puppy and we take turns chasing
each other around the house.
Ripley and Scout
Both are great pets who truly have been “friends for life”.
Ripley’s health deteriorated quickly to the point that her
vet couldn’t do any more to help her. June first of this
year will mark 16 years since I adopted Scout. She has
an assortment of age-related problems but was still able
to dig out of a fence and escape from a friend’s yard in
while I was vacationing in Florida.
Thanks you, AHS!

A native of metro Atlanta, Mariel Hannah was a lifelong pet lover with a special affinity for
homeless animals. Tragically, she was one of four people killed in a home invasion in March
2006. To honor the 18 year-old’s memory, her family and friends established a fund at the Atlanta
Humane Society to recognize selfless acts by teenagers who share Mariel’s love for animals.
We are now accepting nominations for the annual Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award.
If you know a teen between the ages of 13 and 18 at the time of service who performed an
extraordinary act of kindness for the benefit of animals, briefly describe (under 200 words) how
and why he/she should be selected as the 2010 Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award winner.
A recipient will be selected in April and announced in early May at the start of “Be Kind to
Animals Week.” The recipient will receive a cash prize and a plaque of recognition. A second
plaque will be on permanent display at Atlanta Humane Society.
For full rules, visit www.atlantahumane.org/services/marielhannah.php
Mail your nomination to: Deborah Marshall, Atlanta Humane Society, 981 Howell Mill Road

The Atlanta Humane Society, as part of our ongoing effort
to reduce the number of unwanted animals born in the
state of Georgia each year, provides low cost spay and
neuter services for dogs and cats on its state-of-the-art mobile Surgical Utility Vehicle (SUV). The SUV program is an
extension of our outreach initiative, designed to provide
spay/neuter services for individuals who are unable to
access our wellness hospital located here at the shelter.
How can I have a pet altered through the SUV program?
The SUV will be making rounds to various locations throughout Georgia over the course of
the year and will provide low cost spay and neuter services. Scheduling is currently being
conducted using the SUV voicemail system. To access this system, please leave a detailed
message at 404.974.2885. Messages left on the system will be returned M-F between
the hours of 8-10am and 2-4pm. An updated schedule of Surgical Utility Vehicle dates and
locations can be found by visiting www.atlantahumane.org/suv
These companies and individuals have sponsored reduced cost spay/neuter
surgeries throughout Georgia.
