The Northwest of Auckland is undergoing a staggering transformation from a rural and
lifestyle environment close to the Auckland CBD to one of the cornerstone areas in Auckland’s
huge forecast growth over the next 20 years. Central to this growth story is Westgate.
In Auckland’s Northwest, hundreds of hectares of land are being developed for business, residential
housing and at Westgate, a brand new town. Westgate is one of Auckland’s metropolitan centres, a
masterplanned Town Centre on a scale not seen before in New Zealand. Whilst the retail components of
the Westgate project are huge, the story does not end there. Westgate is designed to be a multi-faceted
full service Town Centre which is the hub and central focus for a large existing population and a huge
growth forecast in this part of Auckland.
New Zealand Retail Property Group (NZRPG) is a privately Kiwi owned retail property business. Its
portfolio comprises of the existing Westgate Shopping Centre, the Milford and Highbury Centres on
Auckland’s North Shore and the Fraser Cove Centre in Tauranga. NZRPG, in partnership with Auckland
Council, will deliver a new town at Westgate. This is twelve years in the making, completely master
planned, designed and purpose built.
Central to the Northwest growth story and that of Westgate are new motorway connections. The recently
completed State Highway 18 and 16 motorways and the Waterview connection due for completion in 2017,
will see Westgate as a major retail and commercial hub easily accessible for all Aucklanders.

The sheer scale of the Westgate project is enormous. Auckland Council has committed in excess of
$200million to upfront roading, infrastructure, park lands and community facilities. Westgate will also
home a new bus interchange. The Plan Change area in which Westgate sits is 170 hectares. The roll out
of sequential land urbanisation forecasts the Northwest as being a location providing 20,000 jobs, and a
further 20,000 residential homes on top of the massive population growth which has occurred in the area
over the last 10 to 15 years.
NZRPG has obtained resource consents for the master planned Town Centre for around 250,000m2
of retail and commercial service floor space. Other developments within Westgate include a 6,000m2
Pak‘nSave (now open) and a brand new civic library due for completion in late 2015.
Westgate is one of three major urban developments currently underway in the Northwest of Auckland
alongside the creation of the Hobsonville Corridor, the development of Hobsonville Point (including Yard
37) and The Landing. Together these three projects encompass 400 hectares and represent one of the
largest urbanisation projects undertaken in New Zealand.
From a retail perspective, Westgate is a first. Westgate aims to cohesively accommodate all the aspects
of New Zealand’s retail environment. It challenges the segregation of the mall and the high street and
that of bulk retail. The mix of internal and street based retail together, with superb public spaces will
differentiate Westgate from other retail offers in Auckland.
DNZ Property Fund has purchased a site for the first internal mall within the town and is on track to open
the 30,000m2 project in October 2015.
NZRPG will deliver the first stages of bulk retail, trade and building and street retail
over the next 12-18 months with the Mitre 10 Mega and Palmers Planet now open. Zone 7 of the
large format retail is fully leased and construction has commenced to house the likes of Harvey
Norman, Rebel, Briscoes and Lighting Direct, to name a few. All this will complement the
existing 45,000m2 Centre at Westgate.

Upon completion of the forecasted Stage 1, Westgate will be New Zealand’s first master planned
‘super regional’ location. With over 300,000m2 of cohesively planned and coordinated floor area, the
opportunities will not only be huge in the Northwest but have an impact on shopping patterns
