John Stanford International School 4057 5th AVE NE Seattle, WA 98105 206-252-6080 Newsletter January 9, 2015 Volume 1, Issue 17 Ms. Dedy’s Message Happy New Year, JSIS Families! Contents Ms. Dedy’s Message 1 Important Dates 1 Parent Education 2 School Tours 2 School Notes 3 MLK Assembly 3 I hope that you all had a wonderful and relaxing break! I certainly had a great time hanging out with my family, going to movies and couch surfing with my two dogs. After such a fantastic break, it is great to see everyone back at school again. This year, instead of making a New Year’s resolution, my family and I made an “Ingredients for Joy and Meaning List”. (A suggestion I got from a book I am reading by Brené Brown) On it we put the things that were essential to have joy and meaning in our lives—things like time to play, enough sleep, work that is fulfilling. It was a great family exercise that helped us to refocus on what is really important. I highly recommend it. The topic is Emergency Preparedness and Reunification. We will briefly cover Earthquakes, and then discuss more in depth the student/parent Reunification process that will be used in the event of a disaster or any event in which school is released outside the normal process. The featured speaker is JoAnn Jordan from the City of Seattle's Critical Incidents Management team. JoAnn has been working with JSIS this year helping us with our emergency preparedness plans and processes. She has also been training our staff. We hope many of you will plan to attend. The Reunification process is vastly different than our normal routine and parents can help by knowing ahead of time what to do and what to expect. JoAnn has many great ideas about emergency planning in school and in your homes, and is a wealth of information on how crises are managed at the city and regional level. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us the evening of February 11th! It would be great to have one family member from each family attend this training.
