Serving the needs of our diverse Jewish community for more than 117 years. RABBI’S REFLECTIONS May 2014 | Iyar/Sivan — 5774 Israel: It’s Always Personal This time last year I was getting ready for our PBJC trip to Israel. In the weeks between Passover and Shavu’ot, the Jewish community buzzes with excitement with Israel Independence Day and Jerusalem Day, when, in 1967, Jerusalem became reunited. An early memory: Israel celebrating its Bar Mitzvah year. There was excitement: Israel had reached the age of maturity. The excitement was tinged with sadness, but also great hope: sadness because this was around the time of the Eichmann trial. It had brought back many memories that many in the Jewish community had thought they had left behind. Hope, because it was also the time of the release of the movie Exodus which brought American Jews a sense of pride, but also brought to the general American population a very positive, idealistic image of Israel. On a personal level, my maternal grandfather had found a long-lost niece, born in Europe after he had arrived in America, but who made aliyah in the 1920’s, as one of those larger-than-life pioneers. Cousin Yaffa scrimped together the boat ticket to New York to visit her long-lost relatives. This connection did not simply materialize. For a number of years, she had been writing to the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society with the few details of her uncles and aunts in America. At the same time my grandfather sent HIAS equally abstract letters about two nieces who had settled in Israel. This was not unique to my family. Aside from meeting the family, Yaffa’s visit planted seeds among the American relatives to reciprocate the visit. My mother whose longest trip had been to Cleveland by propeller, said “goodbye” with the promise to be at Yaffa's son’s wedding." My mother was pregnant with my youngest brother when that wedding invitation arrived. Rabbi Mark Finkel A delegation of four American relatives, including my father, did attend. The next generation found their way to Israel on a variety of trips. I even managed to be at Yaffa’s other son’s wedding. It is very easy to speak of Israelis as family. Those of us who have been blessed with Israeli cousins keep in our passports a little slip of paper with our cousins’ names, addresses, and telephone numbers, knowing that they can be more useful than the American Consulate. (They always have a spare bed, even if it's the daybed on the balcony overlooking the street. As we celebrate Israel's 66 birthday and the 47th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem, we know challenges will continue to face Israel, (I’m not a fatalist, but a realist), but each generation of Israelis also know that’s each bump potentially bumps them up towards their destiny. The Pew report suggested a malaise in the American Jewish community. In the 1960’s Israel was the elixir for new generations of American Jews who were searching for their identity. I believe that Israel is a source of redemption for American Jews. And for those who want to sense the energy and excitement without flying 11 hours, I recommend the Celebrate Israel Parade on Fifth Avenue, Sunday, June 1. Have a great month loving Israel, and “Next Year in Jerusalem.” The Candlestick is published 10 times a year reaching more than 400 families. The Candlestick “Passover reminds us that we have some way of navigating this world. For example, if our world seems out of control and we decide to clean the garage, we can at least believe that we have some control over our lives.” – Rabbi Kerry Olitzky Passover is nearly two weeks behind us but I am still relishing the time spent with my son and his husband who are journalists in Beijing and who were in New York for two weeks. Hopefully, you too spent meaningful time with family. THE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR Cleansing the Hametz in Our Lives In The Forward, the Jewish weekly that has been published in English for nearly two decades following a century of being America’s largest circulation Yiddish daily, it was reported that Romemu, a minyan in New York City, announced its decision to spend the days of Pesach “free from the hametz of email.” The rabbi sent out a notification to the entire congregation (via, yes, email), that over the holiday they would be getting rid of “The ultimate hametz.” Hametz means leaven. In one popular Hasidic understanding, the idea of cleansing one's home of literal leaven (which is to say: getting rid of the bread products and so forth) is more broadly transformed into the idea of cleansing one's soul of metaphorical leaven. The hametz of ego, of puffery and pride. Norman Levin Who among us hasn't known the twitchy compulsion to check email one more time, to make sure that we're not missing anything? Just one more hit of the refresh button, just one more reply, one more forward. We love it. And we hate it. “Most of the year, we bemoan but ultimately accept the fact that our work lives require us to be shackled to our smartphones,” the rabbi of Romemu wrote. “But during Passover, that reality becomes even more problematic. How can we celebrate our liberation from slavery when we still feel—mentally, if not physically—enslaved? How can we rid our houses of hametz—the leavened food that Hasidic masters taught symbolizes everything unessential and overcomplicated in our lives—while holding fast to something that complicates our lives more than any breadcrumb ever could?” So for the entire Passover holiday, Romemu did not send any community emails and the staff did not respond to any individual emails. After reassuring congregants that staff will still be reachable by phone in case of an emergency, the Romemu leaders signed off with an invitation to “De-email… and taste freedom.” This idea originated with Romemu’s Executive Director Ilene Sameth. Her desire to “de-email” came out of a reflection on what would happen if she were to relive the Passover story today. She realized that she would never make it to the Red Sea to experience the miracle of liberation, because she would be too busy checking her inbox. The Forward reported that the synagogue’s rabbi is known for ”incorporating his own experience with Eastern spiritual practices into Romemu’s Shabbat and holiday services.” It’s a community that Sameth describes as being “based on mindfulness and influenced by mindfulness meditation” year-round. So, while the synagogue’s new Passover policy “may strike outsiders as offbeat, it’s entirely of a piece with the congregation’s New Age ethos.” I did not have the guts to go the week without email but I did “sign off” for the four days of yom tov. It was in turn both liberating and anxiety-producing. Not filtering my experiences through instant communication helped me focus on the experience itself. So I will do this again—and invite you to join with me on Shavuot (this year, on June 4th). Let’s try a new “diet”—cutting back on the virtual distractions that keep us from actually experiencing each other. May 2014 | Iyar/Sivan — 5774 3 NURSERY SCHOOL Spring Has Finally Sprung! Spring is finally in the air in the Nursery School. What a long, long winter it has been. We started our month fresh and energized following a nice Passover break! Everyone came back to school ready for warm weather, spring project and, of course, getting outside to the playground! Last month we shared how we were raising baby chicks right here in our school!! Well, it was a huge success. After Farmer Kathy came and dropped off 12 incubating eggs, we cared for them each day and then watched, right before our very eyes, as little baby chicks hatched their way into the world!! It was an incredible learning experience for us all as we saw them poke their way out of their shells and then learn to walk, eat and drink within hours. Within days we had 12 fluffy, adorable, chirping chicks and we named them all! Everyone was able to hold and play with our new little friends. Before sending them back to the farm, we had a fabulous "Happy Birthday" celebration where we let them run around a specially designed "pen" and we sang songs so they will always their special friends at PBJC!! May promises to be another month filled with fun and memorymaking! I can't wait to share all about our “trip to Israel” for Yom Ha’Atzmaut, “raising” butterflies, Family Day and Truck Day in my next update! Registration for Pine Brook Day Camp, for children ages 2-4, is still open to anyone interested! We have a great summer planned and always welcome new friends. Registration forms are available in the nursery office. Additionally, there are still spots available for the 2014-15 school year! As always, my door is always open to anyone who would like more information about any of our nursery programs. All the best, Rosanne Mendelowitz, Nursery Director 4 The Candlestick RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Mary Sheydwasser Religious School Director As I look back on this past year, I am reminded of the many wonderful activities and innovative programs we were able to offer our students this year. Our staff of teaching professionals educated and motivated our students with enriching workshops for each kitah; chocolate seders, our Israel program, the Kitah Dalet Shabbaton, our B’Yachad trip to New York City, and of course the class services, just to name a few. Our Kitah Hey undertook a very important mitzvah this past year… Hiddur Penei Zaken - Honoring the Elderly. Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel said, “The test of a people is how it behaves toward the old.” Our students visited the Chelsea residents throughout the year, getting to know them, playing BINGO and most certainly, bringing smiles to all of the residents. Our last month of the academic year will be packed with stimulating and energetic programs for our students, their families and the synagogue at large. The K-2 students will be participating in a Kabbalat Shabbat service on Friday, May 2nd; we will be marking the moving up ceremony (Lech Lecha) of our Kitah Hey students on Thursday, May 1st; and last but certainly not least, our annual Lag Ba’Omer Olympics and the last day of Religious School is scheduled for Sunday, May 18th. Save these dates and plan on attending these memorable events. Words cannot possibly express the gratitude to Sisterhood and Men’s Club for their financial, emotional and physical support for all of our programs. Todah Rabah for all that you do! One meaningful definition of the word CHANGE is to give a different position or direction to something. Our Religious School will be changing our hours and days for the upcoming school year in September 2014. Every student will be attending on Tuesdays from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 9:00 – 11:15 a.m. One important change that will not occur is our passion for Jewish education. We are committed to teaching our students the religious values and ethical standards of Judaism in preparation for life’s encounters. We will be scheduling parent student workshops throughout the year to promote education and community. I look forward to celebrating the various milestones and sharing this Jewish journey with you. We are very fortunate to have the dedication of the many people who strive to make our synagogue the vibrant, meaningful and wonderful mainstay of Conservative worship that it is. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, the parents, for supporting our Religious School with carpools, tuitions, fundraisers, and most importantly, participating in our programs and services. I also want to express my gratitude to the many lay leaders who have devoted their time and energy to make our Synagogue and the Religious School the wonderful, vibrant place it is. Judy Gothelf, our Vice President of Education, Gary Drillings and Michelle Zuckerman, our Education Co-chairs, have been invaluable to the school. In addition, my thanks go to Rabbi Finkel, Cantor Toren, Robin Mangino and all the exceptional staff I have been privileged to work with this past year. Currently, we have about 250 members from Morris and Essex counties. We meet at various times of the year depending on the synagogue schedule. We take trips to museums, attend concerts and shows, have a mid-winter brunch in February, a Shabbat dinner in November, and evening programs. We have about eight events a year, several with bus transportation. Dues are $25 annually. Now that spring has arrived, The Friendship Club will be able to plan activities and not worry about inclement weather. That is a welcome relief for our group. We had a wonderful turnout at our movie night on Tuesday, March 25. The documentary on a popular Hebrew folk song was very entertaining and a joy to watch. We thank Tom Milkowski, our audio-visual expert, for all his assistance. Since this event is always well attended, we will continue to host more movie nights throughout the year. As of this writing, we are looking forward to our visit to the Newark Museum on Wednesday, April 30 to view a special exhibit entitled “American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell.” With a guided tour and a lovely buffet luncheon catered by Encore, it promises to be a delightful and exciting day for our group. Also, we are planning an evening program for the month of June and you will be notified once details are finalized. Finally, if you have any suggestions regarding future programming, please feel free to contact me at any time. The Friendship Club always welcomes and appreciates your input. CLUB NEWS Looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming events. Socially Active Single Seniors In early April we gathered for a night out at the movies. We car pooled to the theatre and saw “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” After the movie, some of us went to a diner and enjoyed coffee and a late night snack. It was a very enjoyable movie, good food, good conversation and a great night out for all who attended. More news will follow on upcoming events we are planning for late May and June, a trip to see a musical theatre production, a casino day trip and a baseball game. Any single PBJC member 55 and over is welcome to join our friendly group of men and women at anytime. Please call with any questions about our group. Your suggestions are welcome and we are eager to please. All calls or e-mails between 4/28 and 5/9 will be answered when I return from Israel. B’nai Mitzvot Jeremy Tuckman was born on April 30, 2001 to proud parents Shari and David. As a big brother to Alexandra, a caring friend May 3, 2014 to many at school and summer camp, and a 7th grade honor student at Lazar Middle School, he has many interests, but particularly enjoys social video gaming and karate. For his Bar Mitzvah project, Jeremy chose to train at Pathways for Exceptional Children and become a mentor to support children with special needs. As a role model, teacher and friend, he actively mentors in class settings and in more personal, one-on-one settings in the children’s homes. Jeremy also uses his position on an elite team at Pace Karate called “STORM” (Special Team of Role Models) to extend the reach of his mentoring and to assist in teaching classes and helping the younger students perform at their best. Jeremy serves as an inspiration to so many and 13 years after his birth, we still couldn’t be more proud. We look forward to celebrating his special day with him, his family and his friends. Jeremy Tuckman 8 The Candlestick Jessica Rose Blake was born on July 5, 2001. For parents, Richele and Larry, and older sister, Sophia, she has filled the days with smiles and May 17, 2014 happiness ever since. An honor student at Lazar Middle School, Jessica is kind, considerate, responsible and insightful and always ready to help others. Jessica Blake One of her favorite activities is spending time with her family at home and on vacations, especially when a beach and sunshine are involved! Her passions are singing, dancing and acting and every week she takes lessons at Fine Arts Connection in Montville. Jessica looks forward to spending much of her summer with her camp friends at her second home, Camp Cayuga. For her mitzvah project, Jessica volunteered her time, sold friendship bracelets, as well as collected donations to raise money for Sharing the Arts, a performing arts program in northern New Jersey for individuals with special needs. We are proud of her and know that an exciting future awaits her. Our family looks forward to celebrating this wonderful milestone with the many special people in our lives. “Thank You” to the following whose donations of time, food and/or money touched the lives of 132 grateful people at the Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center of Morristown on Sunday, March 30: Sheila & Jordan Basem, Betty & Fred Crane, Gail Feldman, Jackie & Paul Fenton, Sharon & Robert Fields, Beth & Michael Fuchs, Mimi Gold, Andrea & Mitchell Goldsmith, Dale & Rob Greenfield, Jennifer & Bradley Horowitz, Paula & Ed Kadushin, Barbara & Marvin Kaufman, Don Kanoff, Melinda Kraus, Susan & Howard Lefkowitz, Susan & Gilbert Mandel, Monique & Jedd Mendelson, Judy & Barry Milstein, Lorraine & Tom Milkowski, Robin Reingold, Pam Lipkin-Sauertig & Rob Sauertig, Zack Sauertig, Marlene Scheinthal, Sondra Schuman, Elissa Schwartz, Shari & Louis Schwartz, Myra & Mal Sumka, Nancy Stanton-Tuckman, Tom Wolf.
