2013 ANNUAL REPORT Just one person… Just one person Just one person doing just one thing, then another person then another and another another and another, another giving giving because it’s the one thing all doing just one thing, that makes all the difference in the world for just one person another and another another and another in need. Make a gift. Change a life. Today. 1 “Just one person” is where the philanthropy journey begins. As each of us walks our own path, we meet other donors who join us, “…and then another, and another…” All of us, doing just one thing…giving… and changing so many lives in our community. Just one person 2013 was a year of transition and excitement. Jim Sealy, Foundation president, announced his retirement and Mary Klinger was appointed as his successor. Jim received the Founders Award at the June 13 Koehler Legacy Society Celebration of Generosity. She and Gene met with St. Luke’s Foundation staff to work out the details of Ron’s memorial fund. “They suggested an endowment, which allows us to spend the interest without touching the principal,” says Gene. “You don’t need a million dollars to start an endowment. We did it with $20,000 from family and friends.” The Ronald L. Mahany Award is presented annually to three associates of St. Luke’s Physical Rehabilitation Division who are nominated by coworkers and selected by a committee of hospital employees. Ron’s family attends the awards ceremony each fall and enjoys meeting the recipients, who use their $750 stipend to attend continuing education programs. Susan Klopfenstein, a 2013 winner, attended a workshop on language growth in autistic preschool children. “I am very thankful to use these funds for such an amazing workshop,” she says. Says Pam, “Ron’s caring presence continues today through his award.” 5 Philanthropy has made a difference in the lives of St. Luke’s patients from the hospital’s earliest days, when donors gave bed sheets, Roll of Honor fruits and vegetables to be used “Do not wait for 75,000+ Transamerica United Way of East Central Iowa Every donor, with his or her gift, $25,000+ grams and services offered at St. Luke’s. The company was formed in June 2011 when thirdgeneration owners John and Phil Wasta of Pioneer Workspace Solutions in Cedar Rapids and Dave and Doug Parsons of Frohwein Office Supply in Coralville decided to merge. Tallgrass has donated to St. Luke’s Foundation’s General Fund in 2012 and 2013 and foresees donating to that fund in the future. “St. Luke’s Hospital plays a critical role in the Cedar Rapids health care community,” says Phil Wasta. “The hospital is also a key player in Eastern Iowa’s regional health care presence.” While Wasta and his partners appreciate the hospital’s quality care, they are equally impressed with St. Luke’s proactive work to make Cedar Rapids healthier. “By supporting the Foundation, we’re supporting the community outreach efforts of St. Luke’s in addition to bricks and mortar,” says Phil. “St. Luke’s programs on diabetes prevention and smoking cessation address many of the issues that put people in the hospital. The hospital shares its expertise to help people live healthier lives.” Above: Brothers John Wasta and Phil Wasta of Tallgrass pose in front of the Lifeguard helicopter their company’s gifts help support St. Luke’s has been the Wasta family’s hospital “forever,” says Phil. “I became more aware of how the hospital serves the community when my mom was on the hospital auxiliary board several years ago.” Many of St. Luke’s services came as a surprise to Phil. “Since I had never used some of their services, like the Child Protection Center, I wasn’t aware of all the needs that were being met.” When it comes to the entities that give to non-profits in Cedar Rapids, Tallgrass is a small player, explains Phil. “But when enough small players contribute, their combined resources make a significant impact.” 15 $100+ continued Mary Ann Thompson Bette Thornburg* Jeffrey and Kathy* Thorsteinson Dr. Shannon Throndson* Robert L.
