The school was officially opened in 1958. More than half of our students speak a primary language other than English. Over 35 different languages are spoken. The most common languages spoken are Cantonese, Vietnamese, Tamil, Urdu, Punjabi, Persian, Spanish, Gujarati, Mandarin and Swahili. Many of our students or their parents have immigrated to Canada. This diversity enhances and enriches our school community. School-wide literacy and numeracy programs We ensure a safe and successful learning environment for all students, staff and community members. through promoting our Code of Conduct and social skills programs. We attend to issues associated with ethnoculutral equity and inclusive educational programs that promote racial tolerance, understanding and harmony. We are implementing school-wide literacy and numeracy programs. Our teachers developed school-wide literacy and numeracy plans. We use assessment data to drive decision-making and to guide instruction. Science, social studies and the arts are integrated across the curriculum. Parents' caregivers and children ``from babies to 6 years learn and play together in their local school. Special Education Programs We have 4 self contained special education programs in our school. They are the Kindergarten Intervention Program, the Junior Learning Disability program and the Primary and Junior Behaviour Mild Intellectual Disability programs. The Arts at Sheppard To enrich our student's lives with the Arts, not only do we have choirs and an intinerant vocal music teacher, but we also have music, dance, concerts and performances. We have a visual artist on staff who mentors aspiring artists. Sports at Sheppard Our students are actively involved in a variety of sporting events. We have an annual Terry Fox Run for all our students. Our students enjoy more than half a dozen intramural sports. Many of our students compete in the Board's Track and Field meet. Sheppard Basketball and Soccer teams have been City Finalists and Champions. All students can participate in the Terry Fox Run and House Leagues. Our intramural sports include 3-Pitch, Ball Hockey, Baseball, Floor Hockey and Soccer. We also have school teams in Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Soccer as well as Track and Field. Our clubs focus on art, reading, computers, knitting and games. At Sheppard we are fortunate to have an itinerant Music Teacher who comes in to our school each week to teach three vocal music classes.
