THE ITALIAN GIRL IN ALGIERS FALL BALLET LA BOHÈME THE LAST SAVAGE THE NUTCRACKER ALCINA SOUTH PACIFIC SPRING BALLET THE MAGIC FLUTE WELCOME to the 2014–2015 Indiana University Opera and Ballet Theater Season—one in which we invite you to “Go Boldly.” Every one of the offerings you’ll enjoy is a masterwork —a bold, artistic statement. All will be interpreted by world-class conductors, directors, and designers. Rossini’s The Italian Girl in Algiers was written in 1808 but features a thoroughly modern heroine. Puccini’s La Bohème amazes with its ability to take us from laughter to tears in a heartbeat. Menotti’s The Last Savage is wonderfully satirical and campy, while Handel’s vocal showstopper Alcina is magical in every way. South Pacific, by Rodgers and Hammerstein, is a blockbuster hit, yet one that faces the real issue of prejudice head on. Finally, there’s Mozart’s The Magic Flute, at once a fanciful fairy tale and a fascinating allegory of religion, politics, and even freemasonry. Ballet in all its brilliance comes to our stage thanks to artistic director Michael Vernon. Tchaikovsky’s beloved The Nutcracker, as well as seminal works by Balanchine and Merce Cunningham, promise us great experiences in the theater. As a subscriber, you’ll have your choice of THE BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE IN EVERY SECTION! You’ll also enjoy SUBSTANTIAL SAVINGS over what the general public will pay for individual tickets, as well as other benefits found in this brochure. So “Go Boldly” with us. Subscribe now for what will be a wonderful season. With Best Wishes, Gwyn Richards Dean, IU Jacobs School of Music General Manager, IU Opera and Ballet Theater GO SOCIAL!
