CAREY THEOLOGICAL COLLEGE ACCESSING CONNECT Getting Started with the Online Learning Environment Updated May 2015 Introduction Welcome to Carey Theological College’s online and hybrid courses! These courses use the Connect online learning environment hosted by UBC’s IT Services. You can log on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from any computer connected to the Internet. Through the course website, you will have access to: Course content Course schedule Instructor information Learning activities Self-assessment tools Discussion forums Assignment and exam information Other resources for interaction & learning The course website is your primary access point to information and learning activities related to your course. Therefore, it is essential for you to become familiar with the course website as soon as the session begins. This document has been designed to help you to get started using your course website and in it, you will find information on: What you need before you login to the Connect course website How to create a Campus Wide Login (CWL) Login Name and Password How to login to your Connect course Who to contact if you need technical help Keep this document handy – it is a useful reference as you learn to use the course website. Technical Requirements Your Computer: Course materials are designed to display on a colour monitor at a minimum resolution of 800x600px, although higher resolutions work best. You should have convenient and frequent access to the computer, as you will need it to access most of your course materials. Internet Access: Course websites are designed to load quickly, but the speed of your Internet connection will affect how quickly the material loads. (Note that due to high volume of Internet traffic accessing UBC web servers, you may encounter some slow connections to our online courses. Please try accessing your online course at a later time before contacting the Help Desk.) Browsers: Connect does not support all browsers. Up to date versions of Internet Explorer, Safari, Chrome, and Firefox are generally supported. It will be used to contact your instructor and classmates. If you have more than one email address, please let your instructor know which email address you use most frequently so that he or she can be sure that you are receiving any course-related information in a timely fashion. Carey Theological College 1 Step 1: Create a CWL (Campus Wide Login) Account Before you can access your course, you must create a CWL account. This process will only take a few minutes. You will need to provide your full name, email address, birthday, and street address. All of this information will be kept completely private by UBC. For your CWL username, you can use anything you like (e.g., raincouver86 or jsmith, etc.) and make sure that your password is not too obvious but nevertheless memorable. Click here to begin: https://it.ubc.ca/services/accounts-passwords/campus-wide-login-cwl Scroll down to Getting Started, and click on “Create a CWL Account”. You should see the login screen here: Click “Proceed” to begin. 1. UBC Privacy Policy page. You must click “I Agree” in order to continue. 2. Select “Basic Account” and click “Continue”. 3. Personal Information page. Fill in your information and choose a username, password, and security question answers. Make sure to write down this information as it is required to access your course. Step 2: Activate your CWL UBC IT Services will send you an email confirming your CWL. You have 72 hours to activate it. Please ensure that you activate your CWL in time or you will need to start all over again and you will need to come up with a new CWL Login Name and Password. Step 3: Notify Carey Theological College Send your CWL Username to Carey’s Registrar Office. We require this information to give you access to the course. Enter your CWL username and password. This will take you to your Connect page. http://elearning.ubc.ca/connect/ (Note that you cannot access your course until the official opening day.) After you have completed the Browser check, return to the WebCT Vista entry page on your course start date, login to Vista, and you will be taken to your My Vista page again, where the Carey course should be listed (under “Course List” in the above example). Click on the course link to access the course.
