CARING COMMITTED COMPASSIONATE ANNUAL 2011 REPORT Note from Our Executive Director Dear Friends, This past year was one of continued momentum and evolution for the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation (formerly the HAVE IT YOUR WAY® Foundation). It was an honor to join the organization as the Executive Director during the last quarter of the year and help transition it into a new phase of growth and development. 2011 provided us with the opportunity to both reassess and revitalize the goals and aspirations of the Foundation. BURGER KING® co-founder James “Jim” W. McLamore’s philanthropic vision of providing students with a chance at a brilliant future continues to be the Foundation’s motivating factor for serving the communities in which we work and live. Through a resurgence of Jim McLamore’s core values of hard work, entrepreneurial spirit and academic stewardship, the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation is now better equipped to strengthen and expand our contribution to those who need it most. Our success in 2011 is due to our supporters, contributors and partners. Thanks to their generosity, we are pleased to announce the BURGER KINGSM Scholars program was able to double its funds from $1.2 million in 2010 to a remarkable $2.2 million in 2011. As we look toward to the future, the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation aims to expand its scope of impact to reach people all over the globe. By merging the support of both local and international efforts, the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation hopes to reinvigorate the brand and secure its spot as one of the premier providers of scholarships and disaster relief for the BURGER KING® family. In the coming years, we look forward to forging new relationships with organizations throughout the world whose goals are in line with our commitment to education. On behalf of our Board of Directors, our BURGER KINGSM Scholars recipients and the many beneficiaries of the BKSM Family Fund, please accept our appreciation and gratitude for your generosity and continuous support. Because of your contributions and kindness, we are able to make a positive difference in the world, and look forward to our continued success in the coming years. With gratitude, Andrea Tejada Executive Director Our History James W. McLamore Our Founder James W. McLamore had big plans for his future. Opening the first BURGER KING® restaurant in 1954 was but a small piece of a more intricate vision that would later be realized and extend well into our communities, our schools and, ultimately, into the hearts and minds of our youth. Integrity, high standards, entrepreneurial spirit, good citizenship and education were the values that defined Mr. McLamore’s vision. His humble beginnings were squarely centered on a firm commitment to education, philanthropy and his calling to help build brighter futures in the communities in which he worked and lived. Today these values are at the core of the Foundation, as we continue to embrace the potential of our future leaders and help students realize their dreams of continuing their education. Mr. McLamore’s legacy continues to inspire the work of the Foundation, and together Burger King Corp., its franchisees and vendors are mobilized to deliver on this responsibility. As a result, the name of the Foundation has changed from the HAVE IT YOUR WAY® Foundation to the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation in order to pay homage to our visionary who set out to respond boldly to the challenges students face, and help improve their achievement. This change will also allow the Foundation to better align itself with the brand’s marketing and promotional efforts, leveraging the equity in our brand’s name to increase awareness in North America and have a strong presence internationally when we expand the Foundation’s education efforts globally in the coming years. 1 Enriching Minds through the BK Scholars Program SM In an unprecedented move, the Foundation expanded the BURGER KINGSM Scholars program with the addition of four major awards totaling $175,000. These awards were part of the $2.2 million in scholarship money awarded by the 12th annual BURGER KINGSM Scholars program. This expansion is a testament to the BURGER KINGSM Scholars program’s increasing popularity, as well as the large number of deserving students in need of financial help. The three new scholarships, aptly named the James W. McLamore WHOPPER® scholarships, were developed with support from the McLamore Family Foundation. Valued at $50,000 each, the scholarships are awarded to recipients based on their grade point average, work experience, extracurricular activities and community service. Kyle Hosley is an honor student, Cameron Windham, an honor Kyriakos Theophanous, a BK president of the Student Council and National Honor Society, head of the local Big Brother Foundation and youth mentor and tutor. He is slated to attend the University of California, Berkeley in the fall of 2012. After winning the award, he said: “Attending UC Berkeley was only a dream, until receiving the BURGER KING student who volunteers in his community, is student body class president, yearbook editor and head of the local chapter of Future Business Leaders of America, said, “It’s a great honor and tremendous gift to be afforded toward my education and the pursuit of my future goals.” He is slated to attend Louisiana Tech University in Ruston, LA to study Biology in the fall of 2012. employee since the age of 16, is an honor student, Eagle Scout, music teacher and first violinist in the local Chamber and Symphony Orchestra. When he learned he had won, he said, “I am looking to go into the medical field and working at BURGER KING® has nurtured many skills that will apply in the medical setting. I am truly blessed to be a recipient of this award.” He is slated to attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall of 2012 with plans to study Biomedical Engineering. McLAMORESM Foundation scholarship helped make it a reality. I am exceedingly grateful and wish, in the future, to make a difference in others’ lives as BK® has in mine.” 2 Kyle Hosley of Calumet City, Illinois; Cameron Windham of Los Angeles, California; and Kyriakos Theophanous of Boardman, Ohio received the scholarships. These students were chosen from among more than 3,000 applicants. In today’s economy, it is too easy for dreams to be deferred. Through these scholarships, the BURGER KINGSM Scholars program helps to ensure that committed and accomplished students can pursue the education needed to achieve their dreams. The Foundation salutes these top-honor students, along with the 1,986 students who this year received scholarships. We are proud to celebrate young people everywhere who are committed to making the world a better place through civic engagement, community service and enlightened leadership. WWW.BKMCLAMOREFOUNDATION.ORG ® Shaping Our Future through Education The BURGER KINGSM Scholars program has granted $17.6 Million in scholarship awards, including the King Scholarship, to more than 17,064 deserving students and employees across the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, since the program’s inception in 2000. The $25,000 King Scholarship is awarded to recipients based on his or her community service, extracurricular activities, grade point average and work experience. The recipient of the 2012 $25,000 King Scholarship was Katarina Nguyen of Lynnwood, WA. Active in her local school and community as a tutor, member of the Varsity Golf and Swim teams, among numerous other multicultural and academic club activities, Katarina also maintained excellence in her studies, achieving a 4.0 GPA. She graduated from Edmonds-Woodway High School and is slated to major in pre-med while attending Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH in the fall of 2012 . “A world of opportunities has been opened up for me through winning this scholarship award, allowing me not only to continue my thirst for knowledge and to pursue a higher education, but also to prepare myself to make an impact in our world,” said Katarina Nguyen. “I hope to one day be able to help others achieve their dreams in the same way BURGER KING® has helped me pursue mine.” In this day and age, a student’s dream of attending college or a post-secondary vocational/technical school can abruptly end because of tuition costs. The BURGER KINGSM Scholars program takes pride in its ability to help ambitious, motivated students realize their dreams of obtaining an education that will provide a foundation for the rest of their lives. We are honored to recognize this year’s King Scholarship winner, along with the many other scholarship recipients. The BURGER KING® brand celebrates the bold leaders and independent thinkers of tomorrow and their dedication to providing a better world for the next generation through community service and education. 2011 ANNUAL REPORT 3 Assisting Those in Need BURGER KING® EMEA BURGER KING® Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) presented the German Red Cross with more than 160.000 Euros ($196,092 USD) on behalf of the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation. Empowering communities through hope, safety and comfort around the world BURGER KING® APAC On March 11, 2011 an 8.9-magnitude earthquake triggered a 23-foot tsunami that battered Japan’s eastern coast, killing hundreds and sweeping away homes and buildings. In response to the immense devastation, BURGER KING® Asia Pacific (APAC) presented the Japanese Red Cross with $20,000 on behalf of the BURGER KING McLAMORESM Foundation. The funds were raised through the Internal APAC Annual Giving Campaign and the friends and family of our BURGER KING® community. Within a week of the tsunami, the Japanese Red Cross deployed 115 national disaster response teams, with more than 730 staff members to treat the injured, provide psychological support, and distribute relief items throughout the area. Thank you to everyone in our APAC region who contributed to this effort. 4 WWW.BKMCLAMOREFOUNDATION.ORG Lending a Helping Hand Ms. Tharsika Thirunavukkarasu, one of our Team Members in Ontario Canada, was awarded $3,000 after a fire that destroyed her home. On June 4, 2011, Ms. Thirunavukkarasu’s home was struck by lightning, causing a fire that destroyed her house as well as all of her family’s possessions. With the funds she received from the BKSM Family Fund, Ms. Thirunavukkarasu was able to provide her family with clothes, shelter, food, and medical attention. On behalf of all of the BKSM Family Fund recipients, thank you to the BURGER KING® community whose support and generosity allows us to immediately help those in need. Taking Care of Our Family The catastrophic EF5 multiple-vortex tornado that struck Joplin, Missouri on the afternoon of Sunday, May 22, 2011 was one of the most devastating tornadoes in U.S. history. As the deadliest tornado in the U.S. since 1947, more than 150 people were killed and 1,000 injured. Sara Cooley was working at a Joplin BURGER KING® restaurant at the time. Moments before the tornado struck, she was able to take cover and help shelter guests in the handicap restroom stall. Once the storm passed, they proceeded to walk outside where they discovered that the entire restaurant, with the exception of that stall, had been reduced to nothing. As a result of the catastrophic damage, Sara was left without a job or car, which had also been declared a total loss after the storm. With the $3,000 grant she received from the Foundation, Sara was able to purchase another car, which was necessary to drive her special needs son to his doctors’ appointments three hours away in Springfield, Missouri. She was also able to secure a job at another BURGER KING® restaurant. 2011 ANNUAL REPORT 5 Thank You to Our 2011 Donors $500,000-$1,000,000 $20,000-$49,999 Burger King Corporation Martin A.
