DIPLOMA EXAMINATION PROCEDURES
FOR SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS
Step One:
Choose the course and diploma sitting in which you are interested. (pp. 3-7)
Step Two:
Complete the required personal information portion of the registration form (page 13).
Then take the form to the school where you are writing the exam to have the school's
information added. If you are writing at University of Alberta Dentistry/Pharmacy Building,
11304 – 89 Avenue NW, Edmonton, or the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology
(SAIT) in Calgary, the school portion should be ignored.
Step Three: Send the completed form to ADLC for processing.
Step Four:
Students must have their Alberta Student Number and a valid photo ID to be eligible
to write the diploma exam. It is the student's responsibility to know exactly which
diploma exam they need to be writing.
Rewrites fees must be paid if you have written the diploma exam within the last two years.
Rewrite students must register directly with Alberta Education, see page 9.
Students with special needs must contact ADLC immediately.

Quest A+ for the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology,
Calgary, (SAIT) or University of Alberta Dentistry/Pharmacy

Students who want or need to use a computer for either Social Studies or English Language Arts
Part A, the essay portion of these exams, and are attending the Southern Alberta Institute of
Technology in Calgary (SAIT) Campus or the University of Alberta Dentistry/Pharmacy Building,
11304 – 89 Avenue NW, Edmonton must bring their own personal laptop. There are no available
computers at these locations for student use. If you choose to use your personal laptop, it must be
PC, Mac, or a Chromebook. The battery life must last for the duration of the exam which is typically
three hours. We cannot guarantee a power outlet.
Prior to the diploma exam, you must install the program Locked Browser. This is an Alberta Education
requirement.

All students must be pre-registered in order to write the Alberta Education diploma exam.
Students must have their Alberta Student Number and valid photo ID to be eligible to write the
diploma exam. It is the student's responsibility to know exactly which diploma they need to write.
Diploma Rewrite Students
The Alberta Distance Learning Centre cannot accept registrations from rewrite students. A rewrite
student is a student who has previously written a diploma exam in the last two years. There is a
$26.25 non-refundable processing fee ($50.00 fee for unfunded visiting students) for each diploma
exam rewrite registration.

ADLC – Other Important Information
Alberta Distance Learning Centre Senior High Registration Guide 2015–2016
(available online at www.adlc.ca) contains other important information for diploma students,
including Alberta High School Graduation Requirements.
Studying: ADLC has provided an optional Internet resource for diploma exam study at
www.exambank.com. Please contact your ADLC teacher for a username and password.
Final Marks: To be eligible for credit in English 30-1, English 30-2, Social Studies 30-1,
Social Studies 30-2, Mathematics 30-1, Mathematics 30-2, Biology 30, Chemistry 30,
Physics 30, and Science 30, students must write the appropriate diploma examination and
attain a final blended mark of 50% or higher. To obtain credit for these courses, students
must complete both Parts A and B of the diploma examination within the same administration
period. In addition to the diploma examination, students must also write a final exam set
by Alberta Distance Learning Centre to qualify for the school-awarded portion of their mark.
Mature students do not require a school-awarded mark. If adults have a school-awarded
mark, Alberta Education grants the higher of the diploma exam or the blended mark as the
final course mark.

Out of Province/Country Special Writing Centre
Information
This process needs to begin as soon as you enroll in a diploma level course. Please be aware
that your application to establish a Special Writing Centre does not guarantee its approval and
you must be willing to travel back to Alberta to write your diploma examination should your
writing centre be denied.
1. After enrolling in a Grade 12 Diploma Course, you are advised to contact ADLC Exam
Department at exams@adlc.ca to begin the procedures required to establish a Special Writing
Center.
2. Student and/or parent must identify a suitable exam supervisor.
The proposed exam supervisor must:
• Be a certified teacher fluent at reading and speaking either English or French, depending on
the language of the examination(s) to be administered.
• Work in the accredited school where the exam is to be administered.
• Not have taught or tutored the student in the diploma exam subject, nor have a vested
interest in the student’s successful completion of the course.
• Provide a valid physical address to where diploma exam is to be delivered, delivery
signature is required by courier.
• Provide a valid e-mail address of school principal and proposed supervisor. This must be
at the school's domain. Hotmail, Yahoo, and gmail types of e-mail addresses for supervisor
and principal will not be accepted by Alberta Education.
3. Student/parent and proposed exam supervisor must review Alberta Education's directives,
rules, and procedures associated with the establishment and writing of a diploma examination
at a Special Writing Centre. These can be found at:

4. Student/parent and supervisor to complete appropriate instructions as required by ADLC
Exams Department. Instructions will be forwarded after initial contact.
