Building solid learning foundations
Each unit is delivered in modules that build
concepts from an introductory level (Year 11
equivalent) through to university entrance level
(Year 12 equivalent), making the MUPC ideal
for you if you have not previously studied the
required subjects for entry into specific degree
courses.
Flexible structure
Each unit is taught for 9 hours per week over a 14
week trimester rather than a whole academic year.
This structure provides focused learning over a
shorter period, allowing you to progress more
rapidly. You may choose to study 2 or 3 units
per trimester to suit your individual needs and
level. (Two hours of supervised study per week is
provided if you only study 2 units per trimester).
Personalised streams
We encourage you to select units according to
your preferred interests, without limiting your
options for future study at Murdoch University.
Academic staff at MIT can assist you with unit
selection and provide you with a personalised
study plan at the time of enrolment.
Which units should I take?
Combine the three compulsory MUPC foundation units: Communications I, Information Technology I and Mathematics and Statistics I,
with any three units from your chosen stream below:
Science
Commerce
Information Technology
- Mathematics & Statistics II*
- Chemistry
- Human Biology
- Physics
- Commerce
- Accounting
- Management & Marketing
- Economics
- Introductory Law
- Communications II
- Information Technology II *
- Mathematics and Statistics II*
- Accounting
- Management & Marketing
- Introductory Law
Communication
and Media
- Communications II
- Plus a choice of two units from
any other stream
* Mathematics & Statistics I and Information Technology I must precede Mathematics & Statistics II and Information Technology II, respectively.
Please note: some units may not be offered every trimester.
Build the foundation for your academic success in
tertiary study with the Murdoch University Preparation
Course! This foundation course prepares you for entry
into many* undergraduate degree courses at Murdoch
University.
The course combines learning from Australian Years 11
and 12, and is recognised by Murdoch University for
tertiary entrance purposes.
* Successful completion of the MIT MUPC will make direct entry to Murdoch University
possible, providing you meet any additional prerequisites set by the university. Special
entry requirements must be satisfied for entry into Nursing, Chiropractic Science, Law
and Veterinary degree streams from MUPC.
16 I www.murdochinstitute.wa.edu.au
Why MUPC?
Progression to Murdoch University
MUPC combines the essentials of Australian Years 11 and 12,
bridging gaps in subject knowledge and learning techniques to
provide a strong alternative qualification for entry into Murdoch
University.
On successful completion of the MUPC, students
are eligible for entry into Year 1 of a Murdoch
University Bachelor degree. A minimum mark of
50% allows entry into many Bachelor degrees.
MIT academic advisers will assist you with unit
selection and with a personal study plan which
will best prepare you for progression.
MUPC is ideal if you...
• Would like to qualify for direct entry into Murdoch University.*
• Want to accelerate your university preparation from either Year 11, Year 12
or the equivalent.
• Want to change degree stream without having to repeat Year 11 or Year 12.
• Would like to study on campus, take advantage of the facilities at Murdoch
University and experience university life.
What will I study?
• The MUPC is offered in four streams. You may choose the one that interests
you the most: Commerce, Communication and Media, Information
Technology or Science.
• The MUPC is made up of three to six units, which can be completed over two
or three trimesters (a total of 8-12 months). The number of units you need
to complete will depend on your prior learning, see page 17 for details.
• The six units consist of three compulsory MUPC foundation units and three
electives. Depending on a your degree preference, a specialist study stream
and certain electives are recommended.
Progression to competitive degrees
Progression from MUPC entering directly
into Year 1 of Murdoch degrees such as Law,
Veterinary Science and Chiropractic Science
can be competitive. Direct entry is possible if
you complete the required units and achieve
outstanding grades, however quotas apply to
competitive degrees. Entry is assessed on a case
by case basis by the university.
How many units should I take?
The amount of units you’ll need to study will
vary depending on your entry level. Here is
an indication of how many you may need:

“What I like most about studying at Murdoch Institute of
Technology is the way the classes run, how I get to do my own
research and that we have class discussions.
I also like how we talk about recent and upcoming technology which
I find very interesting and enjoyable. Our teacher is always keen to
help everyone and is always going around the class making sure the
students know the information. He has helped me to get a better
understanding of IT, prepare for what university is like and given me
skills that will help me with university life.
I want to go onto Murdoch University and study Games Technology
and hopefully then get a job in the field of IT and games.

1.2. Arrivals and departures: Accommodation is
booked in full weeks starting Saturday or Sunday, with a
minimum of 2 weeks notice given to extend or reduce a
period booked.
1.4. Meals and classes missed: No refunds or
substitutions will be made for meals or classes missed
due to exams, excursions, internships, first day
orientation or other obligations that fall outside the
normal schedule.
1.5. No refund: No refund is given for time missed due to
late arrivals, vacations, absences, public holidays, or any
missed meals. Periods of absence will not be replaced by
a free extension of any course. Classes are not held, and
many campus facilities are closed, on public holidays.
All published course dates start on a Monday, but if the
Monday is a public holiday, the course start will fall on
the Tuesday.
1.6. Campus facilities: Students are advised that campus
facilities may not be available during university study
breaks. Details are available from MIT Student Services
Office.
1.7. Placement: MIT reserves the right to place a student
into the most appropriate class, and to cancel classes
at short notice where there is an insufficient number of
students for that class. The minimum number for most
classes is 10 students. Please refer to our ‘Refund Policy’
(4.6) for more information.
1.8. Programme changes: MIT has the right to change
course dates, course curricula, tutors and programmes

increases, governmental actions, or other events beyond
it’s control. Fees published in the 2011 Fee Schedule are
valid for courses starting in 2011.

orientation meeting, use of computer room and internet
quota, placement and progress testing and an MIT/MLC
certificate on completion of the course. MIT reserves the
right to withhold the granting of a certificate attained
by a student if tuition fees or any other fees remain
outstanding.
1.11. Books and learning materials: Students are
required to purchase text books, stationery and other
required learning materials at additional cost.
1.12. Additional services: Any additional services
(telephone costs, excursions and enrolment
amendments) are not included in any fees unless
specifically stated on a valid invoice.
1.18. Health declaration: Students must report on
their application any mental or physical illness, allergy,
disability or condition that may interfere with their
ability to successfully complete their programme,
that may impact the health and well-being of any
other student, host or staff member, that may require
monitoring, treatment or emergency intervention of
any kind during the student’s anticipated period of
enrolment, or that may require special accommodations.
MIT reserves the right to reject an applicant or terminate
a student’s enrolment in the programme if the student’s
continued participation represents a risk to their
health and safety or to the health and safety of other
students or staff, or if, notwithstanding reasonable
accommodations, in the opinion of MIT, the student’s
physical or mental condition makes the student unable
or unlikely to successfully complete their programme.
Refunds in such circumstances are at the discretion of
MIT.
1.19. Privacy: Information collected by MIT which
personally identifies a student and information
regarding a student’s course progress may be shared
