1. Minutes from the February meeting were approved.
2. Actions from previous meeting
(a)
Ron Graham has contacted the Monash Office of Environmental Sustainability
about implementing water conservation strategies. There will be no response
until after Easter.
3. Safety Issues from faculty
The Engineering Faculty Zone meeting will be held in the 7th of March.
A desk-top audit will be conducted by Worksafe in the 1st week of April with
particular emphasis on chemical storage.
OHS have developed a new format for risk assessments. All risk assessments
will need to be redone to comply with the new format, starting in 2009.
A table showing the Faculty of Engineering OHS objectives was tabled. Martin
Rhodes, Jill Crisfield and Ron Graham have already met to consider the Chem.
Eng. response to the objectives.
4. Laboratory Inspections
A schedule for Semester 1, 2008 is attached to these minutes.
Since the last meeting the following inspections were completed: Chemicals store,
Fluidisation, Dewatering/SHS drying, corrosion and coal science.
The flammables storage in the coal lab was found to be inadequate and additional
storage needs to be installed. Action: RG
5. Incidents reported since the previous meeting
A postgraduate was seen entering the food lab barefoot. The student was
counselled by the lab manager about this and warned of the consequences if it is
repeated.
A bottle of waste chloroform broke in the warm weather as it was overfilled. The
chloroform then evaporated. This could have been prevented if a vent cap had been
used. These are available in stores.
