Continued on pg 7. We hope you had a chance to attend or participate in the 43nd Annual Grand Old Fourth of July Parade and Community Celebration in Downtown Winslow. It was truly one of our biggest and best ever, with decent weather throughout the day, mixed with throngs of family, friends, and visitors from afar. An estimated 20,000 to 25,000 people turned out to enjoy the Street Fair, with its wide assortment of arts, crafts, food, entertainment and information booths; the High School Booster Club’s Pancake Breakfast; Fun Runs (presented by Bainbridge Youth Services), the Historic Baseball Game (supporting Helpline House); the Classic & Antique Car Show, and, of course, our famous mile-long Parade down Madison Avenue and Winslow Way, with a theme of “Celebrating Our Local Heroes”. The Grand Old Fourth is produced by the Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with the City of Bainbridge Island. But this fabulous community event couldn’t happen without the generous support of our corporate sponsors, especially our “Premiere Sponsor” – Cook Family Funeral Home. Thanks to David Cook for his unbridled community support. Our other sponsors, who provide funds to support vital event infrastructure, such as the parade public address system, port-a-potties, volunteer communications, entertainment, garbage pick-up and recycling, the beer and wine garden, our volunteer luncheon, our information booth, advertising and PR, and many other in-kind services include: Bainbridge Disposal, Columbia Bank, Cris Ugles Building Inspection Services, Flamingo Audio, Harbour Public House, Hill Moving Services, Island Center Automotive, Kitsap Bank, Kitsap Credit Union, Linna Callaham – Chrome Classic Car Insurance, Modern Collision Auto Rebuild, Rolling Bay Automotive, Sears & Associates Insurance Brokers, San Juan Navigation, Sterling Savings, Suquamish Clearwater Casino, and The Bainbridge Review. These companies support the Chamber and many other island organizations and causes. Without their financial contributions many worthwhile community projects would never get off the ground. Summer is in full swing at The Bloedel Reserve. On August 5, we will welcome guests from all over the Puget Sound region at our Fourth Annual Garden Party. This wonderful event raised funds to be used in the restoration and preservation of the beautiful gardens at The Reserve. We send our sincerest thanks to our generous sponsors: BNY Mellon, West Sound Home & Garden Magazine, Puget Sound Energy, Port Madison Enterprises, and Paladin Data Systems, and to our more than two dozen wonderful party partners: caterers, restaurants, bakeries and food importers, wineries, and breweries, and the Puget Sound Restoration Fund, whose volunteers harvested oysters from the Reserve’s tidelands hours before the party. Guests supported the Reserve with the purchase of stunning container arrangements donated by local nurseries. There have been many exciting changes at the Reserve in the past year. The biggest change, one that has been welcomed by our members and visitors, is that we no longer require reservations to visit the Reserve, nor are we restricting the number of visitors. This new policy has helped The Reserve to be much more welcoming, and encourage spontaneous visits from our members, tourists, and those who have always intended to visit but could never find the right time. In August, The Reserve will be open until 7:00pm on Wednesday through Saturday, closing on Sunday at 4:00pm. Our extended summer hours have made it easier to visit The Reserve during lovely late afternoons. The Bloedel Reserve is a world-renowned garden, and frequent recipient of honors and awards from national and international publications. In May, USA Today named The Reserve as one of the ten best public gardens in the United States. While we are very proud of our international reputation, we also are eager to make sure that local residents enjoy this treasured garden. For more information about visiting or to learn about the many benefits of membership in The Reserve, visit our website at www. bloedelreserve.org. August 2010 www.bainbridgechamber.com Classic Car Show Big Purple Slide The Street Fair We want to extend major kudos to Town & Country Market for the use of its parking lot to stage a portion of our Street Fair and to park vendors during the day. Our hats go off to Larry Nakata, Wayne Loverich and T&C store manager Rich Pedersen. We also want to acknowledge the annual in-kind donations of Perry Blasburg and Mike Smith of Pro Build and Rick Pasma of K&R Services for the use of three flatbed trucks, and to Port Madison Homes, Earl Miller and Lundgren Station, and Mike’s Car Wash for access to their electrical panels. These donations allow us to create the announcer stands used during the parade. Most of the hard work of putting on the Grand Old Fourth is the result of a cadre of loyal volunteers who invest hundreds of hours from March to July each year planning, coordinating and executing this annual community event. Some of these folks have been at it for more than two decades! Volunteers such as Jeff Brein, Drake Walters, Charlie Sharpe, Bill Chamberlain, Jeff Giblin, and Jack MacArthur handled much of the activity associated with putting on the Street Fair, and setting up the Waterfront Park stage. They, along with Chamber staffers Kevin Dwyer, Betsy Leger, Mickey Molnaire, Kris Rothert, and Vicki Rauh, did a tremendous job this year – from sending out initial letters to potential booth vendors, to organizing the parade, coordinating volunteers and following up on myriad last minute details. For the first time, the Chamber had to rent barricades for traffic management. Thanks to trucks and trailers provided by Bay Hay & Feed and Chamber Board member Charlie Frame, and crews led by Arnie Sturnham, Linna Callaham, Jeff Giblin, Jack MacArthur, Andie Mackin, Terry Bryant, and others, more than 150 barricades were put in place prior to the Fourth and retrieved shortly thereafter. Coordinating traffic in and around Downtown Winslow and helping with set up and traffic flow for the Street Fair, the Classic & Antique Car Show, the Parade, the fun runs and other Fourth events takes teamwork and cooperation. On the night of July 3rd, thanks to Michael Rosenthal, Bob Moore, Ed Johnson (and his brother), Doug Rauh, and Jack MacArthur, for Street Fair set-up and traffic flow help; to Lois Boubong, and Shannon Foti and friends for decorating the Waterfront Park Main stage and Chamber tent. On the Fourth, a tip of the hat to: Jeff Brien, Bob Linz, John Brubeck, Scott Isenman, Jared Tramel, Molly McCabe, Shannon Sumner, Tim Wentzel, Ed Kaufman, Paul Roth, Linda and Steve Sutherland, Sheri Watson, Marian McLain, Linda Thurrott, Lois Watford (and friend), Larry Judd, Gary Davidson, John Benges, David Spooner, Jack MacArthur, Larry Sears, Rodney Bauch, Charlie Frame, Lois Boubong, Gary Pitts, Dale Knell, Els Heyne, and Howard Block for monitoring barricades, directing traffic, putting up banners and signs and offering support throughout the event. A special thanks to long-time volunteer Drake Walters for his PA system and Parade support leading up to and during the event; and to Barbara Reininger for deftly handling Fourth entertainment and amusement activities. Another staple of the Fourth is the Classic & Antique Car Show held on the parking lots behind Columbia and Chase banks, Lindsleys and BI Cycle. Thanks to volunteers Richard Kile, Bob King and their Pit Crew that pulled off another exciting show, which included some fun surfer and old-time car music, and neat prizes and giveaways (See box below for winners). True to tradition, the Parade –with 95– entries featured the U.S. Navy and Marine Color Guard, the police and fire departments, 4 July Classic Car Show Winners The Classic & Antique Car Show continues to be a highlight of the Grand Old Fourth. This year, the event had more than 80 entries and an enthusiastic crowd of admirers. The 2010 winners were: Diedrich of Bremerton - 1936 Ford 3-window coupe People’s Choice Award - Don Roose of Bainbridge Island - 1972 LOLA T300 Formula 5000 race car Our thanks to chief Car Show Honcho Richard Kile and his awesome pit crew for coordinating the show, and to Chrome Classic Car Insurance, Modern Collison Auto Rebuild, and Rolling Bay Automotive for sponsoring this year’s show. The Parade was one of the most efficiently run in our recent memory. Chamber staffers Kevin Dwyer, Betsy Leger, and Mickey Molnaire did the behind-the-scenes work of organizing the more than 95 entries on paper. The on-site work of assembling Parade entries into the correct section on the Fourth fell to volunteers Mary Dwyer, Trudi Bartholomew, and Diana Davidson, with an incredible assist from Ed Johnson and more than 15 fellow Bainbridge Kiwanis Club members. Thanks to Bill Beck of the Colin Hyde Post of American Legion for securing the military Color Guards for the Parade and for putting up the flags along Winslow Way; to Steve Mikami of Ace Hardware for donating flags to further decorate Parade floats; to Rebecca Judd and Bainbridge Library for providing registration tables and chairs for the Parade; and to Costco for donating water to thirsty Parade participants. The Parade wouldn’t be the same without announcers Frank Buxton and Matt Smith, who worked the center stage on Winslow Way, Dr. Mark Soltys at the corner of Winslow Way and Madison Avenue (now in his 23nd year) and John Ellis and Molly Gordon at Madison and Wyatt Way.
